2017 QB Realities

Most (or at least many) pundits on this site, feel there is no reason for Mac to bring in a seasoned QB for 2017. Give the kids a chance and let's suck in 2017 to build for the future, is the logic. Here's the reality; it won't work. Let's say they throw Petty in there and he does only slightly better than he did last year. The record will be 3-13 and despite fans saying they are willing to endure a terrible season, everyone will go crazy and will be calling for heads to roll. AGAIN. Including Woody. Then we hit the reset button AGAIN and the new regime will be starting from scratch including getting rid of the decent players from the 'old regime'.

Scenario 2; they hand the ball to Hackenberg and they don't win their first game until week 15. Bowles is fired during the bye week. The debate begins about whether Mac should stay and be able to hire his own coach. He doesn't as Woody cleans house AGAIN. The #1 pick in the draft will not suffice as a consolation prize. It just won't.

If anyone here, or anywhere, thinks Jets fans can endure a season of last year's Rams game again, they're smoking crack. Mac knows this and Bowles knows this. Expect a seasoned pro to start the season and expect 3-6 wins.

here is the reality there is no reason to rush things, when the market settles and the free agent bridge quarterbacks won't have the leverage to strangle QB needy teams in overpaying for their services then the Jets will take a flyer on the best option they feel will compliment this roster... but understand this our young buck QBs will have first chance to earn the starting job, the veteran if signed will be as the #2 to which ever one wins the job, and could be the starter "IF" Petty isn't healthy and they feel Hack needs another year to develop with this new coaching staff and system they will be implementing...

This seems more realistic.

If we start Hackenberg, fans have to be really patient. If we are going to win maybe 4 games this year, people have to realize that it is not on Hackenberg. The roster needs work. If he develops over the course of the season and we seem improvement, then that is a great sign. I don't believe Bowles will be fired regardless of the record, if the team improves over the course of the season. Expectations need to be set with the owner and the fans. The Jets won't win a lot this year - but they will compete and improve over the course of the season. Key players at QB, LB, CB and WR should develop. If we see those things, then we can start adding more pieces next year to be in the mix for a wild card spot perhaps.

Let's see what happens in this draft too. I have a feeling that the Jets are going to have a very good draft this year. This is a deep draft class at several positions of need for the Jets, TE, LB, CB, RB. The Jets fill a lot of needs if they draft well.

I also think that Lee is going to take the next step if he can stay healthy. He's a physically talented player. I think the coaching change helps him a lot. Same with Mauldin, if he can stay on the field.

I don't expect a lot of wins. But if the Jets are competitive in almost every game this year, and they improve over the course of the year, that is progress. Rebuilding doesn't happen over night.

I agree. It's a long-term plan, and expecting short term results is honestly pretty shortsighted. For once, let's as fans let a regime actually enact a full plan, rather than expecting immediate results, only to hit the reset button a couple years later. I am tired of hitting the reset button 60% into a regime's long-term plan. I'm also sick of a regime needing to bring in free agents and implementing a short-term plan because fans expect immediate playoffs.

For once, can we take the time to do things right? Organizations like the Steelers and Packers are not huge players in free agency. They draft well, and work to keep their guys.

It depends on how Woody and Mac deal with Bowles. If they put a mandate on him to win now to keep his job, he'll go with the vet. If they put a mandate on him to stick with the youth plan, then he will go with one of the young guys.

This is exactly what needs to be done by Macc.....

does maccagnan now have any say on who bowles starts at QB?? unless the chain of command has changed, he doesn't.. hell, we've spoken about it..

that said, if johnson has put a mandate on "win now," after cleaning house, the dysfunction of this organization is not fixable without a change of ownership..

what can possibly be more important in '17 aside from seeing what petty, hackenberg & maybe a draft pick can do??

Good question. This is why I dislike the current chain of command, as you do.

another good question is, to my knowledge, why that question has never been broached by the beat writer's?? if i had the credentials, i would keep asking that question until i got an answer..

LOLz perhaps there's is a handshake deal with johnson & the beat writer's about what will & will not get you blackballed?!

The one thing Bowles and/or Mac cannot survive is if the team doesn't play hard and they continue to act like a bunch of prima donnas (as they did last year).

not sure how you can put that on maccagnan.. if bowles wants to continue kissing veteran's prima donnas' asses with playing time & free passes in his pressers, what can maccagnan do about that if bowles doesn't answer to him??

I think he shouldn't sign him to a mega-deal.

And those 3-6 wins just set back this organization even further. Needs to be complete tank with effort and basically teenagers playing.

When exactly did the Falcons win less than 3 games before they made the Super Bowl?
When did the Broncos win less than 3 games?
Steelers?
Packers?
Seahawks?
Or when exactly did the Browns win more than 3 games?
The answer is they haven't!

Yet it seems everyone on this site feels the ONLY way to win is to lose. That's simply not the case. Just learn how to draft and the rest will take care of itself. The best players on the Seahawks were not top 5 picks.

There might be the problem. Just shitty drafting by a shitty organization. The Jets need to hit some home runs.

You may have answered your question indirectly without realizing it. Doesn't matter if the fans or Woody can endure it, we may have no choice. So we might as well start a young QB. You said it yourself, with a vet QB they will win 3-6 games. That is not a playoff team so they might as well play a young QB and win 1-3. What's the difference? Building correctly will take time and patience on everyones part. We all need to understand that. So if getting a vet QB this year isn't going to instantly win us 10 or more games and make us a playoff threat, then what's the point? Start the young QB and let's see where it goes. They're going young at every other position anyway, so why not at QB?

You're argument is very logical and makes sense. And I agree with your conclusion. However, I think if they throw Petty or Hack in there and they totally stink out the joint (think of Geno's 3 int in the first 5 minutes) this team will become a laughing stock AGAIN and that's the one thing Woody cannot tolerate. Losing most games by 10-6 or 12-10 but being competitive is the best we can hope for this season. Butt fumbles, laughing stock games, etc won't be accepted.

I'm encouraged by how fans on this site have realistic expectations for next year, at least for now. However, let's say Mac manages to sign Hightower, takes a chance on Morris Claiborne who looks great in camp, and trades the 6th pick for #12, and #33, trades (the headache of) Sheldon Richardson for the Cowboys #60 and trades #39 to the Falcons for #63 and #95. That leaves Mac with #12, #33, #60, #63, #95 and #107. Six picks in the first 3 rounds allows Mac to draft a starting CB, WR, ILB, S, TE and OL. I guarantee that all expectations will be raised and fans would be devising scenarios that would allow the Jets to sneak in to the playoffs. It's human nature. Hey, we're Jets fans, we have nothing except for imaginations!
