Jabrill Peppers tested positive for diluted sample

NFL teams now have more questions about Jabrill Peppers than what position he’ll play.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Michigan hybrid safety tested positive for adilute sample at the Scouting Combine.

And just like Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster, Peppers got out in front of the news by claiming he was overly hydrated in a statement sent out by his agency CAA.

“Peppers went to the combine, the statement read. “He was sick after flying there from San Diego. He has a history of cramping. Peppers was being pumped with fluids, drinking 8-10 bottles of water before he went to bed, because he was the first guy to work out two days for the LBs and DBs. He had to go through that first day, come back on second day, and that was the fear. So Peppers was pounding water and under the weather. He never failed a drug test in his life, nor tested positive before for any substance.”

While that’s very possibly true, it’s also irrelevant in the context of the NFL’s testing program, which treats dilute samples as failed tests.

To what degree it impacts his draft stock remains to be seen.

More question marks for these players. My dream draft:

Trade back to 12 with Cleveland pick, OJ Howard at 12, Reuben Foster at 33, and Jabrill Peppers at 39.

Wow. This was a guy who had a ton of talent, but was slipping as a tweener. Now this?

Can't believe I'm saying this, but could he make it to the early second?

A diluted sample is not a fail because there are banned substances in it. The assumption is that the player is loading up on water and other fluids to mask something they have been taking/smoking. To my knowledge Peppers doesn't have a history, so this may be that he was overhydrating for preparation of combine where he competed as both a DB and a LB. Or maybe as has been reported, he was overhydrated due to being ill. Perhaps I'm naive, but I think this is crap.

i'd hate to see my michigan guy fall in the draft, but this would be an absolute dream draft for the jets. that's possibly three top 10 talents (admitted bias on peppers' talent level)

Great point being raised by Pat Kirwan on Sirius NFL Radio - why not do a medical re-check on the guys that tested with dilute samples that say they just drank too much water? Test them 2 days later? And if not, why wouldn't the teams go and ask? If not that either, why wouldn't the player/agent set one up, instead of just crying foul?

Silly thing to do by Peppers. Think about how dumb this is. Peppers thinking,"hmm smoke pot or opportunity to make millions? Wow, hard choice" I can Smoke pot Digging ditches or not smoke pot or drugs & playing a game being paid millions & set for life. These young men can stop taking drugs, test clean make millions & retire in 30tys & then smoke pot/crack or dog turds all the drugs they want & drink themselves into a stupor after ruining their life. Not very smart but its their choice. I dont feel sorry for guys decisions doing this at all.

Diluted samples are a flag the person is trying to flush or mask the drugs in their system. Usually drinking a gallon of grape juice will do it but still will be flagged. How about just not doing it & have a chance to make millions instead of some BS story of why it tested like this? Choices are make millions/set for life or do drugs which is more important drugs or making millions? Seems like Pot is more important than playing & making millions.

Peppers and another player both claimed to have diahrea, and admitted at the draft they were pounding Gatorade.
The real problem is that even if this is an illness result, it still throws him in the NFL drug protocol as a first offense, which means he had one less strike left, add compared to others. To an nfl team, that means an increased risk of being suspended later in his career.

Let him fall, take a safety at 6, and peppers next. Secondary fixed.

jets at 39?? i know @mkcuz really likes the kid..
Yea boy.
I'd play him as a floater, a la rex Ryan and revis. Play him as 3-4 weakside olb. Spy the protection, he's smart enough to see a mistake and sack the qb in 3 seconds.

Against a hurry up offense he can back peddle into a safety, or easily play olb as a zone defense disguise. Creep into coverage, play safety, blitz from weak side, or stay at lb and defend the sideline.

He's not going to fix our defense, but if we can get half decent starters are other positions of need, he takes an average d and wreaks havoc on offenses. How do you set protections against him?

This guy is bill belichecks wet dream.
