Do you believe that the current regime views Hackenberg as the future starter?

What does this year's draft tell you about our 2016 second round pick?

Before the draft many were saying that depending on what we do with our picks would be telling on how Mac feels about Hackenberg.

Is Mac crazy for going into the season with just Hack, Petty and McCown?

yes have to believe this regime is all in on Hackenberg...

give him weapons, build the defense and special team's units and let this kid swim or sink either way we need to find out or next year we could be in the QB market again...

I'm working right now and haven't been able to check on anything but this tells me we didn't draft a QB. If we did, guessing it was a 5th rounder or worse. Anyway; to answer your question, they must feel he can give them something or they would have done something with this draft (early) or better then McCown in FA. I'm glad they are all in on him. I have no idea if this kid has it or not but I sure would like to find out. This team will win 0-3 games if he is horrible and 5-8 at best if he's good. So is he really messing anything up by playing him this year??? Let the young kids play together and grow together. Time to see if were building a competitive team for the future here or not. I'm very interested to see the team this year, I won't say excited but very interested.

Not crazy. Here's my thinking:

You already have two projects on the roster, Petty and Hack. Was there a QB at all in this draft who was more than a project? Trubisky needs reps. Watson wins, but his measurables are off. Mahomes has great attributes and rough mechanics and decision-making skills.

Unless you're drafting a sure thing in 2017, let your current projects pan out or fail before bringing in yet another project. Next year is your year to get a sure thing, if Hack or Petty fail.

unless a QB in this draft blew maccagnan's socks off, what would have been gained by picking a QB this weekend??

wisely or other wise young hackenberg, you're a year 2, 2nd round pick for a QB starved franchise.. put on your big boy pants & compete & study like your career depends on it..

This is exactly what I was hoping would happen: No QB's chosen. Yes, I think Hackenberg is better than what is being said about him. Not sure I'm happy the 1st 2 picks were defense, and disappointed that no O-linemen were picked. But if they had taken a QB at 1 or 2, I would have figured the kids really are trash. Now I find some hope that isn't the case.

I like this let the bright lights and pressure be on Hackenberg to sink or swim

I am not sure really ... I think they have their collective fingers crossed with both Petty and hack; thus, the McClown pick up. They know, as we do, the roster is a mess and they add some good players esp. thru rounds 1-5 and some CB projects that could develop but will help ST now so.... overall not a bad draft. QB/OL candidates were weak and they did what they need to do when your one of the least talented teams in the NFL....

No I don't. I believe there's no way the front office will ever let Petty or Hack go without giving them a decent shot at surprising people. I am confident the CS has 100% confidence that the Jets starter is currently not on the roster, but they must give the current guys a shot, so they will. In the end, the CS doesn't care about 2017. They are banking on getting a top notch QB in next year's draft...

I agree with everything, though I think the front office cares less about 2017 than the CS does.

In this case, it is vital that everyone be on the same page. You cannot have Maccagnan building for the future and Bowles in a win-now mode. Now, the solution to this may not be what people want to hear, but the best way to ensure that everyone is on the same page is to give Bowles a semi-pass for 2017. He has to know that player development is his ultimate goal, and that team record will not impact his job status. If he is coaching for his job, he will undermine what Maccagnan is trying to do long-term.

Sometimes we just have to be realistic and not sugar coat anything. It will be painful to watch and painful to be part of this board with the negativity that will come with a terrible year but I think we are on the way up. Like you said in another thread, Mac acquired talent and is building the team up from no talent to a decent roster. Obviously, good QB play masks a lot of deficiencies.

I agree completely. Good post and I hope Bowles is on the same page with the FO

My ideal would be for the Jets to play extremely competitive games that they barely lose, securing the top pick and being able to hand-select the top QB of their choice. They will then be setting that QB into a franchise where there is a lot of young, rising talent, and in a couple years, they all mature into a top-caliber team.

I believe in Hackenberg. As a PSU fan, I watched him for 3 years. As a true freshman with an NFL patriot offense he was successful. He had talent in Allen Robinson to throw to. They allowed him to make audibles at the line. He's big, strong armed and has the intelligence to do it... after his freshman year he just took a MASSIVE beating every Saturday. When we picked him I was excited. Hearing the reports on him shocked me. But he has gotten high praise from Brandon Marshall as a first guy in last guy out type guy. I'm rooting hard for the kid. I'm excited to see how he has developed.

Ive noticed youve said this a few times on the board. And I couldn't agree more. None of these guys jump out at you and a qb starved league over values qbs. Let Hackenberg start. If he can hack it then we have something. If not, then this roster is probably bad enough to get us a top 3 pick and one of the top qbs in a strong class next year.

unless things have changed, bowles does not report to maccagnan.. if that's still the case, johnson or his brother, or whoever the hell the HC & GM answers to needs to make it crystal clear.. both have to be on the same page going forward..

as far as how to gauge whether bowles gets extended or fired in '18, here's what i believe:

let bowles be judged by his team playing with a sense of urgency all season, regardless of what our record may be..

letting his players know showing up late if at all, will no longer be tolerated.. if he still doesn't believe lateness is a big deal?? yeah, well tough shit.. bench players that do it anyway!!

being an off field distraction will no longer be tolerated.. if you insist on being a horse's ass, you will be benched..

veterans no longer get free passes anymore for playing half ass, or if they simply can no longer play at a high level..

Mac is ALL IN on Christian Hackenberg. There is no doubt about it. There were no QB's in this draft that compared to Christian on how Mac felt or he would have pulled the trigger.

Make no mistake, Hack was a high pick in '16. That speaks volumes on what Mike thought about him. No way that he folds the tent and would have drafted yet another project this past weekend.
There's an evident plan with Christian that the GM and HC Todd Bowles have to develop him the right way. I commend them both for not listening to fans and the media to rush Hack onto the field just to gain garbage time experience with a trash O-Line and an out dated offensive scheme.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. How Macagnan views Hack is EXACTLY how Ron Wolf viewed Brett Favre. The talent is there. The mind set is there. The Raw'ness is very much there.
Now it's how Mac can harness all of that under the right tuteledge with the right environment and place him with the right players just like Wolf did with Brett to allow him to become succesful.

All signs this off season points that they're headed in the right direction.

Looks like we're in complete agreement. I wonder who will be the starting QB on opening day?

Well said. There's only so many practice/camp reps to go around, you can't develop 3 project QBs simultaneously.
