I agree with everything, though I think the front office cares less about 2017 than the CS does.
In this case, it is vital that everyone be on the same page. You cannot have Maccagnan building for the future and Bowles in a win-now mode. Now, the solution to this may not be what people want to hear, but the best way to ensure that everyone is on the same page is to give Bowles a semi-pass for 2017. He has to know that player development is his ultimate goal, and that team record will not impact his job status. If he is coaching for his job, he will undermine what Maccagnan is trying to do long-term.
unless things have changed, bowles does not report to maccagnan.. if that's still the case, johnson or his brother, or whoever the hell the HC & GM answers to needs to make it crystal clear.. both
have to be on the same page going forward..
as far as how to gauge whether bowles gets extended or fired in '18, here's what i believe:
let bowles be judged by his team playing with a sense of urgency all season, regardless of what our record may be..
letting his players know showing up late
if at all, will no longer be tolerated.. if he still doesn't believe lateness is a big deal?? yeah, well tough shit.. bench players that do it anyway!!
being an off field distraction will no longer be tolerated.. if you insist on being a horse's ass, you will be benched..
veterans no longer get free passes anymore for playing half ass, or if they simply can no longer play at a high level..
