Nothing will change until we have a new owner, I am convinced of that. The character of a team comes from the top, and he comes across as weak and adrift. We need someone who actually built his fortune by kicking ass, not inheriting $billions of dollars.
Look around the league at the owners of successful teams: they are no-nonsense, intense, and ruthless. Kraft, Jones, the Maras, the list goes on.
If he would just give up and sell the team, what a blessing that would be...
Problem is, he paid only around $600million for the team, 17 years ago. Today, it's worth almost $3billion (which is half of his net worth). It makes money for him, in spite of it's mediocre record - because it's a NYC team with a loyal fan base. I don't think he finished college, and never went anywhere with the career handed to him at J&J. He's on the board of an investment company, but he's window dressing there - he is not purported to be any kind of financial genius.
Being a team owner gives him a high profile, he rubs elbows with 31 other unique individuals, most of whom earned their money the hard way. I wonder what the other owners actually think of him - if they think of him at all.
When I see him on tv, wearing a Jets hat, I just think he looks foolish. He's not kidding anybody, is he?
When I think about rooting for the team and being a loyal fan, I realize in effect I'm rooting for him. Which makes ME feel foolish. Here I am, having a serious interest in a feckless billionaire's shiny plaything - and they don't even win, which would at least give me some satisfaction.
Sorry to launder my psyche in public, but I'm about to walk away from it altogether. After this year, I probably will.
