The new Tampa defense?

Tony dungy built 2 super bowl teams around a simple yet effective defensive strategy. I'm not referring to the cover or Tampa 2 defense, but the actual players.

The philosophy was to have 3 elite players up the middle. Warren Sapp, Brooks, and lynch. Then fill in with others, not to mention ronde barber thrived in the Tampa 2 by being aggressive on blitzes and smart in coverage.
Dungy then did the same thing in Indianapolis.

What Mac had quietly assembled, is this same base of players. Leonard Williams up front, Daron Lee, and now Adams. I believe these guys are all smart 10 year players. Make no mistake, defense wins championships.

We might even have a little Tampa/ Seattle mix. 3 up the middle, and 2 very good safeties. I can't wait to see what happens...

i was with you until lee.. at this point, i'd be pretty happy with serviceable..

that & bowles/rogers are definitely not dungy.. & if lee is to somehow become an elite hybrid, i don't see those to dopes being the guys that pull it out of him.. still, i don't see either being here past black monday, so maybe going forward, you might be on to something..

Agreed. Excellent player is something I absolutely do NOT see in Lee. I think Mac will be apologizing for Lee someday...........

3 first rounders up the middle of the d.
Lee might not be a hall of famer, but I think he will produce like a first round talent. I also think mac is building a modern speed based defense.

Having lee up the middle is actually an advantage in a cover 2, where the weak spot is behind the linebackers. He has the speed to cover that area. Nothing is guaranteed and he might be a bust, but mac has used his first round picks on defensive positions up the middle.

He may have drafted two perennial Pro-bowlers in Williams and Adams, so even if Lee is above average and not elite, we have the foundation of a tremendous defense.

We still need a #1 corner to make this defense elite. I really believe that Lee, Mauldon and Jenkins are a good enough trio of linebackers to complement the rest of the defense.

Yes we do need a cb1, but picking at 6, lattimore looked like a millner type trap.

Perhaps next year we sign or draft a cb high. The coaches are also high on our current cbs, so we'll see where the chips fall. There will be plenty of playing time for the kids to develop.

I'm just not sold on taking a Safety or a CB that high in first round. Very few have become that game changer that wins games. Drafting Safety this high is saying to me that Mikey thinks this young man is the next Ed Reed, Brian Dawkins, Rod Woodson, Ronnie Lott. If our number 1 pick cant stop his issues on keeping his weight off ,his speed will falter. Look I hope he is the next HOF Safety, Man O Man do Jets need that! But taking such high risks boom or bust players like Hackenburg , CB , Safeties, as game changing Players ,could be career killer. I hope Both Safeties are good, but odds of game changer like Reed,Dawkins,Woodson? I doubt it

Who have the Pats had "up the middle" in their last two SB wins? Unless you're a real fan, the don't come to mind as easily as the Tampa three.
In baseball, they used to say you have to be strong "up the middle" but I don't think that kind of backbone strength is as important in football.
You need players everywhere to be elite, and balance can be more important than having just a few good players.

Brady add belichecks, not really relevant to my point!
I'm not saying that's the key to any Superbowl, just that having 3 of your best players yup the middle, year in and year out, provided a strong foundation to build around.
