Because as of now he is all we have and even if it is small he still has a chance to be a good QB. A guy who is in the league 8-10 years has no upside. They are what they are and have no place to go but down. As Parcells famously said "if you arent getting better, you are getting worse"
Believe it or not Geno improved a fair amount from year one to year two. This shouldnt be over looked. He improved even more after his benching. I'm saying there is still a chance here.
Do you honestly want a rookie QB starting week one? After what we have seen?
I understand what you're saying -- I just can't get myself to agree.
I don't see how Geno was anything more than HORRENDOUS last year. The thought that he's magically going to get better is no different than me winning the lottery -- possible, but not worth betting on. If we can bring a serviceable QB in, I'm all for it. He may not be able to carry the team, but as long as he doesn't single-handedly lose games for us it will be an improvement.
Barring an AMAZING off-season, I just don't see how Geno has the upper hand in ANY competition (except against a lost rookie, and even then the rookie would have to prove to be lost before Geno got the nod). I'll give Geno the chance to prove himself, but his benefit of the doubt went out the window (for me) a long time ago . . .
