First off let's get the easy out of the way..... the defense looks much improved and everyone in the 1's, 2's and 3's look like they are competing and playing hard...
Now my take on the offense.
First, again the obvious should have never let Decker go
Second should not have signed McCown and here is why:
After 2 games we have seen inconsistency from both Petty and Hack... Pt's not being scored is a problem. But I think, and i have said this in the offseason, Petty and Hack should have been battling out for the starting position without any reps being taken from them by a veteran. McCown is 37 and at the end of his career but ha played well at times on terrible teams. The reps he takes away from Petty and hack stunts the development. Less time with coaches getting coached up, less time implementing what they have learned about the new offense, less reps getting comfortable, less reps getting in synch with the WR's and OL and most importantly less time going up against the #1's on defense. Absolutely nothing good about signing McCown
Now there is no question Hack has improved from last year but he is still a ways away from being the starter but if no McCown and a fair battle between him and Petty how much further along would he be.....
As well as Petty the forgotten man each of the last 3 years.. 1st year drafted Redshirt year behind Fitz and Geno.... 2nd year... Buried behind Fitz and Geno and plays the best in Camp to really earn the backup spot only to be treated like a 3rd string and to get hurt in a meaningless game. and here we are in year #3 getting lost in reps again because McCown is there and he really isn't being considered for any significant role... Not gonna develop that way.... Absolutely awful watching these young guys with talent not being given the full attention needed to develop.. I give the JEts credit with the work on Hack. he might be still not ready but he is light years ahead of where I thought he would be But the question is :
How much better off in development would these kids be if McCown isnt there
and lastly
Where do we draft if the defense plays up to their potential and McCown plays well another 5-11 6-10 and maybe 7-9 year that means we will have to trade up to get a franchise type QB...
When we could have had 1 of 2 things happen with McCown.... hack or Petty makes significant progress to be the guy.... they make progress to still be 5-11, 6-10, 7-9 and you still trade up or you finish 2-14 and draft 1st overall...
We didn't need McCown to put us in any position to trade to get the QB of the future.. We either have it now or we don't and we should ahve found out by letting them develop and play.
