Sack will chime in. It helps that we do have a good offensive line coach.

And here I am!

I do think the Jets have a good OL coach. Not a legend, but Pollack has done well when he's had a decent group, as he did in Dallas. He's not Scarnecchia or Callahan, but he is a solid OL guy, and he learned under Callahan. Right now, this group is pretty solid. It seems like there is already some shared chemistry, some social media comments with guys like McGovern, Fant, and Van Roten, suggesting the chemistry could be very good. Also, Clark and Becton get along well, and I could see Clark being in the plans as the long-term guy at LG next to Becton.

On the other hand, almost the entire group is new. The shutdown is hurting their ability to gel. If the preseason is abbreviated, I could see the first few games going pretty rough, especially with some of the front sevens the Jets will face early.

I absolutely think the OL will get there. But circumstance and scheduling may delay that development some.

I played OL in college. I have coached prep and high schools. With an entirely new group like this, it will take some time. A lot depends on the ability of the center to direct the show. Now, the Jets have a good, smart center in McGovern, so that bodes well. But there could be some growing pains in the first quarter to the first half of the season. Maybe first 5, 6 games. By then, the comfort level will be there.

And when I say growing pains, it's not going to be like years where the talent isn't there. Rather, it will be the occasional miscommunication. For example, you may see someone missing a blitz because he thought he got a call to step check or chip, a quick double-team, when that wasn't the call. Or someone may think another guy is picking up an edge or a blitz. With a group still gelling, you might see that 2, 3 times a game. And it's not as easy to tell from watching the game on TV, because we don't know the line call or the assignment. It might look like Fant missed his block when in reality it was Van Roten, or vice versa. Those are the sort of things we could see early. By the second half of the season, those miscommunications will be cut down.

Joe Douglas built this offensive line knowing the limited time they will likely get they will be able to execute the game plan... We drafted a raw technically sound road grader who will likely start at right tackle to develop his technique to move over to the left side in year two or three... Signing Van Roten, and McGovern gives the team flexibility in scheme as both are technically sound and the short area quickness allows them to convert speed to power while executing a zone based scheme... Brian Winters apparently not getting any credit but his style is based on zone blocking, before he had to reach to help out either the center or tackle sometimes he had to pick one or the other... Wild card, Larry Warford the Jets could target him with $18 M funds under the cap with an additional funds to come after post June cuts... Larry Warford is the typical road grader with short area quickness and made a staple with his speed to power on the snap...

George Fant's light feet and initial punch rounds out the line either with Brian Winters or possible signing of Larry Warford... Fant is a place holder until Mekhi Becton is able to develop into the franchise starting left tackle...

Frank Pollack's scheme will allow the team to simplify the blocking scheme to maximize immediate continuity... The chemistry will develop over time for the running game and passing attack...

The one aspect of that I might counter would be that the move to a zone scheme may take a bit more time with an entire unit. It's a good time to focus on a zone blocking scheme, rather than taking an established unit and changing scheme on them. However, one aspect of the zone scheme that is important is that it is meant in part to have a unit stepping and making initial contact in relative uniformity, as though it is a single wave of linemen stepping in coordination. That will take more time, as will some of the pass blocking assignments, as I mentioned in my previous post.

You are right that Pollack's scheme will help, in that a zone scheme is far simpler to teach than a more traditional man scheme. I cannot possibly tell you how true that is. Having done it myself, it is immensely important. In some ways, I wish I'd had the chance to play in a zone scheme.

so between Pollack and Joe Douglas himself I guarantee they will make it much easier for these veterans to gel from jump street... simplifying the game plan, scheme and blocking assignments by leaving a TE or Gore in to assist on passing downs not to mention utilizing the zone run scheme a tad more to get the defenses second guessing their own assignments...

The only disagreement I have is that I believe Becton will be the day 1 left tackle. He and Fant on the outside will be miles better than what we had the first two years of Darnold's tenure.

They definitely drafted him to be the franchise LT. I don't know if that will happen for the opener or not, especially with an abbreviated preseason. But it's also why there is flexibility in Fant's contract, to adjust to Becton's timeline.

the only player who did not come from a zone scheme is the rookie Becton which making him the right tackle helps him develop his technique while allowing him to use his brute force to open up holes in the run game but pass protection will be problematic for the rook right from jump street...

Gase game plan is a zone run, unfortunately for us its inside runs where Bell doesn't thrive... They brought these particular players in because they are zone based blockers, with quick feet and agile hands...

And that they are veterans, and that Douglas knew the kind of guys to bring in, will help. Like I said, there will be miscommunications, especially in pass pro. The missed double calls, the missed step checks, or a mixup between G and C or G and T over who picks up the backside edge. That is going to happen. And we at home might not have all the info to know who really is to blame.

But I could see by the halfway point, this group gelling, and becoming much more cohesive.

Good point about most of these guys coming from zone schemes. There clearly was forethought and strategy put into the guys they pursued.

The one good aspect for Bell is that he has shown at times in his career the patience and ability to read blocks.

I see the Jets having a hard time with this schedule and winning about 7 games at most for a few reasons:

1. Just the schedule in its self: I initially looked at it and thought it wouldn't be so bad but playing the NFC and AFC West will be though.

2. Adam Gase: I don't trust him and don't see him as even a good HC, or a QB or offensive guru. I was initially happy with the hire last year but all that has changed. Hopefully they will fire him if he doesn't get this team to a better than 7 win season but they probably will give him another year or two.

3. Sam Darnold's health: I think Darnold can and will be a very good to great QB but he can't seem to stay healthy. This is two straight years that he has missed three games for whatever reason and until that changes, the Jets will struggle.

4. I don't think we have enough offensive weapons yet: Self explanatory.

5. Defense: We seems that we will struggle there also. Secondary and pass rushing issues.

I would have more concerns about Sam's health if last year was another injury, particularly a lower body injury. But it was a random illness. I don't know if that can be factored into the equation too much.

As for the weapons, you may be right, but they are better than they were. And if the line gives Sam time, he can elevate his skill guys.

I read in Dane Brugler's draft guide that Becton played in Coach Satterfield's "stretch zone scheme". Is that different from a 'zone scheme' that you cite?

Louisville pulled both guards and center to help Becton in pass protection because he was huge with a powerful punch he would get overwhelmed with outside rushes because his technique was raw and in college he was able to dominate the level of competition whereas the 1% is now everyone at this level and he will be dominated not only because of his poor raw technical attributes but because he has no one helping him... Think like this a kid grew up knowing one language but was forced to learn another one from scratch he will either be all in or give up hope he is dedicated to be all in...

as for Louisville excerpt:
The Stretch “G” is another zone-blocking scheme (same technique as the one-back outside zone) with the play-side guard (“G”) pulling to block the first defender who shows in his gap. Teams will also run the Stretch “C” and pull the center to the edge of the formation to target the primary edge support player.

Gase and Pollack last year used a inside zone run scheme, rarely did they attempt to run outside the numbers and if Bell did get to the edge is because he was patient enough for holes to open up, that is why they signed Gore to run up the middle not to mention mentoring La'Mical Perine... As for the pass protection, if it wasn't for the experience of Beachum, in the second half Darnold would of been really phucked up...

Stretch zone is often used to describe a system that utilizes both inside and outside zone schemes. It's stretching the defensive front seven horizontally.

I coached in a system where we had a mid zone, an inside zone, and an outside zone. If you have a RB with patience and vision and an OL with athleticism, it can be quite effective.

I watched plenty of games in key situations that the center or oft guard pulled across to help out Becton because he was so raw with technique and footwork that if he got beat he couldn't recover, so they sent him help...

as for the style they incorporated was for outside runs just because that was what Becton thrived in run blocking... at this level it could be a plus but as well a negative...

compared to UL, Gase is the opposite and we witnessed last year Bilal Powell looked better then Bell, just because the power run, north south was easier blocked in their scheme then the patient Bell waiting for a hole to open...

signing these guys for this year have linemen that can move in space rather than a phone booth... expect to see all five linemen moving around to open lanes to run through not to mention see guys get beat but able to recover by not holding penalties... Becton has to start on the right side, just because on the left he will be flagged for many holding calls and hands to the face and we don't need that early on his career because it becomes a habit that he may not recover from... on the right side, the tackle is like the guard where his job is more physical than athletic...

I had watched film on technique. I had not seen how much help he was getting on the outside.

His sack totals were quite low, so I did not buy into the "bust" talk. But if he got help inside-out, that does factor into that.

one of the games I watched was Virginia, and I am sorry but Becton was irrelevant in that game... looked like he was blocking air... when pass blocking he was confused on his assignment, the whole game seemed like he was lost...

another game was against Syracuse when in pass protection the game plan was to roll the quarterback the other direction... if it was step back/drop back pass they kept the tight end to chip block that is not encouraging for a man that size with all that said athleticism...

there was one wheel route to the inside that if that receiver didn't get open Louisville QB would of been planted because of the miss block that Becton forgot or didn't understand was his assignment...

using his size he is a good drive blocker in the run game so for him to start at right tackle will utilize his skill set but he has a long way to go, going to see if I can get tape on those two games...

I am hoping Joe Douglas has better eyes than either of us, so we will see. I didn't like him as much as Thomas, and I knew he would rise up the boards because of the combine. But I still liked him. He was my second favorite OT.

So great to look @ our schedule without giving us two free automatic loses vs & @ N.E now that Brady and a lot more has vanished lol now I'm feeling we SWEEP them for once
Don’t think we’re ready to sweep NE. They will still be a very formidable team with Belibitch, the other coaches and that defense. He will find away to make whatever QB he has a contender. We should beat them at home but on the road I doubt it.

Na man. He can't win without Brady. Look @ his all time coaching record of 7 years without Brady lol he's a career loser without Tom and before Brady? Was 1-4 against our Jets lol he's a defensive brain and not a QB whisper. And the one year without Brady in NE with Cassel? No playoffs. And a LEGENDARY defense. Cassel even made pro bowl in KC.

6-10 7-9 @ best this year for NE maybe even worse. He is fkd with these JAG QBs.

he went 11-5 with Cassel. and 3-1 with the deflate gate tandem of Garoppolo and Briset. thats 14-6 as cheatah without brady. pretty sure we never had a 14-6 span at any time belichicks evil reign in NE. I wouldnt count him out just yet. it was defense that won those superbowls more so then brady

the worst thing going against him right now isnt brady leaving, its Scarnechia retiring again
