He would have gotten suspended if he was a Patriot who dared miss a voluntary workout to be there for the birth of his child.

it was non-voluntary...remember, Wilkerson was there instead of getting 60k fine per practice missed; but to your point, Pats would have sent a fine.

I think we're gonna like this kid.

I never had any doubts. Earlier in this thread some place I had a huge debate with Grogan on him. I have been a smith fan for awhile. The guy was approached last summer by Urban and told how he would be used, that it may cause his stats to go down but his big plays up, and he said no problem and just did what his coaches asked.

Smith doesn't have a route running problem, IMO, like some said during the draft process. Urban even proactively told the kid he'd be running primarily go routes this year. The year before his route running was on display.

He seems very coachable and team first.

I think he can be a long term elite #2 .

Oh, that's right. He missed minicamp, not OTAs. Point holds, though.

The baby was born on June 18, a week after Mini Camp (June 9-11) ended.

This is a rookie who skipped out on mini camp because his baby was due, then he has the baby a week later?

gotta say i agree with you. we went back and forth on this at the time and i defended him. i had assumed that the birth was imminent and that the mother was in labor. i was surprised when i read the baby was just born.

now we don't know all the circumstances, but it does seem curious that he would miss a minicamp a full week before the child was born.

He obviously had it pre approved by the team and the team hasn't fined him yet so they appear okay with the decision. His name is Devin not Geno...no need to crucify him if the team isn't. Hold that hate for the players you love to hate, like Geno. No need to throw unwarranted shade on Devin if the team isn't.

who exactly is this directed at? i agree it was an excused absence, so if the team is fine with it, that should settle it.

i just said it was curious that he would miss all of minicamp when his child wasn't born until a week later. but i guess that is hatin' in your book

The book on Devin Smith, the wide receiver from Ohio State the Jets selected in the second round of the draft, is that he's a vertical deep threat with limitations in other parts of his game.

On draft night, general manager Mike Maccagnan dismissed such concerns by saying the Jets were impressed by Smith at his Pro Day, when he was able to show he was more than just a fast dude.

"At his Pro Day, he ran a variety of routes and you could see all of the physical ability you would want there to be able [to run multiple routes]," Maccagnan said.

But according to wide receivers coach Karl Dorrell, Smith discovered upon joining the Jets that he would have to learn not to be so one-dimensional, that he'd have to be versatile enough to play any spot, be it the X or the Z or even the slot.

And during rookie minicamp and organized team activities, that proved to be a big adjustment for Smith.

"Devin struggled with that," Dorrell told NJ Advance Media in a recent interview. "He came in thinking, 'OK, I'm coming in from a great program, they're going to put me in one spot and play.' Well, you're wrong. You're going to play more than one spot, and you're going to do that on the practice field."

Smith was present for most of the Jets' offseason program, but he missed their three-day minicamp two weeks ago as he awaited the birth of his child. (On Wednesday, Smith announced on Twitter that his daughter had been born on June 18.) Smith is expected to be ready to go when things get real at training camp in approximately four weeks.

PLUS: Nick Folk says new extra point rules could mean more injuries
Dorrell, a former head coach at UCLA who came to the Jets after spending last season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Vanderbilt, wasn't singling out Smith for criticism. He wants all of the Jets' wideouts to be able to ready to spell anyone else. It's just that Smith had been used primarily as a deep threat at Ohio State, so there's more for him to learn now.

"They have to look at themselves as a guy that can relieve Brandon [Marshall] or relieve Eric [Decker] or relieve whoever's in the game," Dorrell said. "I want to build flexibility. So you have to have that mindset, to be able to plug-in and be effective. That's my goal from the very start is to cross-train right now, from day one.

"It's a lot more pressure to get those guys ready to play, but in the long run, it'll be more effective for them."

Dorrell also acknowledged that what was being asked of Smith—and, frankly, every receiver in his group—can be difficult to absorb right away. The transition from college to the NFL isn't always seamless, at least at first.

"In college," Dorrell said, "when you haven't had that experience playing a lot of spots, to now you've been thrown in a new system and new terminology, and you're playing two or three of those spots instead of being just one."

Do we know anything about the mothers health situation that last week? That would be a major factor IMO

Not sure many fans care based on the tone of many posts in this thread, unfortunately. Its sometimes hard to separate being a fan from the fact players are real people.

this is definitely true, and a point i raised when we initially discussed the topic (where for the record, i actually defended him from missing minicamp because of the pending birth of his child)

Typically in situations like this, you just never know when the baby will actually be born. They could have given her a tentative date that was a week after camp but the baby could have come a week early or late. You just never know. Plus we don't know if she was having any kind of complications that could have effected her and/or the baby. She could have also been in pre labor for weeks before the tentative due date. Devon not being to mini camp shouldn't be a issue at all for anyone. It wasn't for the team, so it shouldn't be for any of us fans. Not debating or arguing with anyone here, just throwing in my 2 cents.
