Another Year, Another Competition Tilted in Geno Smith's Favor

If the head Coach thought Geno was the worst QB ever, like some posters here, he would not be listed # 1 on the depth chart. Bottom line. Geno may or may not be the starter this year. But the coaches obviously don't share that sentiment

Or the coach's realize, like most every else, the Smith has some arm talent, but has not played at all well. They want to see if Galiey can spin some magic with him. They have a competent, if not great QB in reserve.

If Smith goes all Geno in the first month, I suspect the trap door on his career will open quickly

Or the coaches realized that their regular season starting QB is healing from a leg injury and it's easier to throw a career backup to the wolves as your "starter" in July, wait for the picks, fumbles and other botches to make the decision an easy and obvious one and get Fitzpatrick geared up time for real football in September

I believe the QB's are competeting even if nots being called a QB competetion. If the coaches see something better than Geno in camp and thru pre-season that guy old be the starter. A QB competetion is something for the media and fans to get involved with, talk about, and form an opinion. That's not important or good for the overall offense.

It's all about reps with the 1's. You can't unseat an incumbent QB unless your getting reps with the 1's.

ESPN poll ranks Geno Smith worst QB in NFL

July 21st, 2015 1:45 pm

In poll comprised of 35 league insiders and coaches, Mike Sando of ESPN.com ranks Jets QB Geno Smith as the worst quarterback in the NFL for the second consecutive year (July 21).

Smith was one of eight quarterbacks placed in the fourth — lowest — tier of the quarterback rankings. According to Sando, a fourth-tier group is for “unproven starters or those who might not be expected to last in the lineup all season.”

One coach who was part of the poll said Smith continues to have trouble establishing himself as a pocket passer, and that he doesn’t “process fast enough.”

In 2014, Smith completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Football Outsiders ranked Smith 32nd overall in terms of efficiency. PFF ranked Smith 39th overall at quarterback — just above Derek Carr and Blake Bortles. Based on Smith’s two years worth of results it is hard to argue the ranking or the goodwill that Carr or Bortles might get thanks to their being rookies in 2014, even if that goodwill is completely unwarranted.

Two years in a row, Geno has been benched as a starter for uneven play only to see himself re-inserted into the lineup due to his backups getting injured, or playing as bad or worse. Geno has demonstrated some intriguing play during the two Decembers of his NFL career, but now he has to go out and prove that he can play better throughout an entire season before he’s going to be bumped up in any insider/coaching rankings. With names like Matt Cassell, Brian Hoyer and Josh McCown directly ahead of him, it’s not going to be hard to jump up some spots on this list, but for him to even be included on this list a year from now he has to prove that he can do more than hang onto the rung right above replacement level quarterbacking. To do that, he needs to master Chan Gailey’s system — a system Gailey is more than willing to tailor to his quarterback — before the bullets are live in September.

LOL

Not a new thread. Just a new article. Amusing that the thread you posted was a thread from November. I assume that you are going to be unhappy unless the most polarizing player on the team is only mentioned once a year. And only in glowing terms. Perhaps you can petition Elias to only have 53 threads a year. one for each player, and we will PM posts to you first to see if they meet your approval.

Works for me, not sure how good it will be for the board

New articles are good in my opinion. It freshens up the board and creates new content. Unfortunately the stuff being discussed now is repetitive. It happens. Once the season starts we will have more to discuss.

Once camp starts. Can't wait to read the camp reports. Unfortunately i've been fooled by them too many times. Everyone looks so good in camp. Put them in games, they are awful.

Geno last year was looking great!

How about this, every day I bet I can find a new article on Geno. From now till week 1. I will open a new thread for each article I find daily. This should be a fun exercise. I'll just use Geno as an example, not the jets as a whole, or we'd have 50-100 new threads daily. Let's revisit how good an idea it is to open a new thread for every article after week 1. I will begin this exercise tomorrow.

No need for that. I think FLgreen is smart enough to know how post within the flow of the board.

No need go through with your experiment. Not just any Geno article lol. We write Geno articles on the front page. Those are not worthy of a thread lol

Of course you can. Smith is the most controversial, and divisive player on the team. If you look over the team, IMO at least, they are talented enough to make the play offs. QB is the one position that may hold them back from having a successful season.

Right now is a real lull in any news. It's either Smith, or fluff stories. If a noted analysis makes a statement that Smith is on the up swing, it's worth a post. If ESPN polls a group of insiders, and coach's, and the conclusion is that Smith is the worst QB in the league, it's post worthy.

Other wise Elias might as well just close the board until camp begins. Still won't work, because most of the scribes are going to be writing articles on what's going on with the QB's. Their going to get posted.

I honestly don't see you complaint as valid. As I mentioned, the thread you linked to was originally posted in November. It's OK to post another Smith thread IMO. Not to mention that the post you are complaining about was posted in an existing thread, so your project of starting a new thread for every new article, just doesn't hold water.

The real problem is that you don't like reading negative articles about Smith. When training camp opens, hopefully the articles will be more positive, and they probably will. Smith is a good practice player. It's when the bullets start flying that he falls apart.

Relax. Don't get your knickers all in a knot

Geno Smith Ranked lowest in QB Tiers

Geno Smith Ranked lowest in QB Tiers

Bunch of insiders put the QB's in tiers from 1-5. At least not everyone is done with him

32. Geno Smith | New York Jets

Average rating: 4.29 | Change in rating: +4.3%

2014 Rank: 32

Ryan Fitzpatrick could wind up starting for the Jets, but Smith is currently penciled in, and he's the more interesting study as a young player with some talent. There is not much excitement for Smith overall, but two of the higher-profile offensive coaches in the league accounted for two of the three highest votes for Smith.

"When I watch Geno play, where are the base plays?" one of these coaches said. "To make the quarterback successful, you do not run more exotic schemes. Geno has run an offense that is trying to win with scheme. I see a guy who has talent, but he has not been coached like a quarterback. I think you have to give him a 3 based on that."

The other offensive coach said the 2014 Jets "ran every play in the history of football" at the expense of those base plays a young quarterback needs to rely upon in a pinch. Both coaches used the word "incomplete" when describing Smith.

Others were harsher.

"Geno is a 5, and that is it," another coach said. "He cannot process fast enough. He is not a natural guy, sliding in the pocket and knowing when to run it. He has some legs to run, but no, he is trying to prove he is a pocket passer. Let's do something at the position before we start limiting ourselves for image."

A personnel director said he thought Smith was erratic in his public comments and in his play.

"You don't have to be like everyone else," this director said, "but he does not strike me with his actions or thought process as a starting quarterback."

When I saw this posted as a new thread I thought 55 was going to have a stroke.
I am often on the other side of issues with 55 but when it comes to multiple threads open at the same time about one player or one issue I agree with him.

IMO all it does is have multiple threads open that all rehash the same facts and opinions no matter what the difference was supposed to be when the addition threads where open things always come back and rehash the same stuff.

I respect management and I will deal with things this way because it is what they want. I think it all come back to the board we migrated from and how things where handled there that shape our opinions.

i think Elias has complied. Looking at the board i notice a lot of the threads have been moved. i personally don't care, but you have to consider the time of year it is. Not much going on out there. Don't want the board to become tombstone.

There were 2 Geno Smith threads on the front page. One was from November

And the same posts in that thread are in this one. It's just the same people rehashing the same stance over and over again. Nothing new. this thread will fall off too, then we'll see Geno pop up in the Leonard Williams thread, or the Devin Smith thread, etc, and we'll still see the same comments from the same people. Nothing new has occurred to get any kind of unique responses.

Thanks. I'm on the fence of it too. I merged the Rex Ryan threads and Revis because a lot of the same stuff was being posted there.

I think we should just use our judgment when posting. Some things make sense to create a new thread and sometimes it doesn't. In either case, just leave it to the mods and we'll use our judgment lol. No need to fight/debate each other.

I don't want petty fights breaking out over this. Lol

Remember. All Jets talk!

ESPN survey: Jets' signal caller Geno Smith ranks last among QBs

2h
Rich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer

A year ago, Geno Smith finished dead last in ESPN NFL Insider Mike Sando's first annual quarterback rankings, based on the opinions of coaches and talent evaluators. When I asked Smith about the survey in training camp, he replied with this rather startling comment:

Geno Smith is still the worst starting quarterback in the NFL, according to league insiders. Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports
"The thing about it is, you have to climb up. If I'm No. 32, by this time next year or the year after, I expect to be in the top 5."

Well, it's next year, and the New York Jets' quarterback still has a ways to go.

In Sando's new rankings, in which he solicited the opinions of 35 league insiders, Smith placed 32nd. Again. Tough crowd.

Frankly, I'm not sure if Smith is 32nd or 28th or 26th; does it really matter? The point is, he's in the lower tier, and that has to change if the Jets hope to accomplish anything in 2015. One of the anonymous quotes in Sando's story is particularly insightful. One of the unnamed coaches blames some of Smith's struggles on the offensive system (see: Marty Mornhinweg), saying it was far too complicated for Smith. Another offensive coach says the Jets "ran every play in the history of football."

I agree. Smith was a bad fit for a West Coast offense, particularly Mornhinweg's version. His successor, Chan Gailey, hopes to change that by employing a quick/easy-read system that, in theory, should allow Smith to make fast decisions and deliver the ball on time. Basically, the plan is to "clean up his reads," as they like to say in the business.

Smith "cannot process fast enough," according to another unnamed coach. "He is not a natural guy, sliding in the pocket and knowing when to run it." Those comments are fair, but what we don't know is how much the old system contributed to that. We'll find out in the coming months.
