i assume bowles is gonna run a base 3-4 defense, so i'm not sure we will be pursuing high-priced rush DEs who excel in the 4-3. i don't want any more experimenting with converting DEs to OLBs.

Guy's, I'd love to have Houston OLB, Bryant or Thomas WR's or Revis CB back, but we can't afford $$$$ them ! Even Lupati G is going to receive stupid money. Here's my free agent plan that might change but:
1) The best "unknown" CB out there is Davon House 6'/195 (25) with the Packers and they can't franchise him because of Cobb WR or Bulaga RT are FA.
2) With Percy Harvin cut, we have to look @ Jeremy Maclin 6'/198 (26) or Randall Cobb 5'10"/192 (24). Plus draft White, Parker or Green-Beckham.
3) We are loaded @ guard, we need tackles. I wanted Bulaga 6'5"/315 (25) RT from the Packers, until I started to read that Orlando Franklin 6'7"/320 (27)/ Broncos prefers RT.

We could save a ton of cap space to sign our guy's first, and still have plenty to go after House CB, Cobb WR & Franklin RT.

Go Jets....Cyborg

Cy, we're loaded at guard with...Brian Winters, who is putrid and will not compete for a starting position, Oday Aboushi, who was Winters-esque intitially as a starter, did a little better as the season wore on, but is still an average-at-best G, and Dakota Dozier, who is a completely untested 2nd year player from that football powerhouse Furman.

The point is, we're loaded...with backup guards. Meanwhile, we still have Brick at LT and Giacomini at RT, each of whom has a hefty contract we can't get out of without taking some serious dead money hits ($9M for Brick, $4.4M for Breno). We''ve got Ben Ijalana and that kid we took from the Steelers, Wesley Johnson, backing them up. Each is probably comparable to what we have at G in terms of skill. So how is it we're loaded at guard and in need of tackles?

Now, maybe Aboushi turns into something, and maybe maybe so does Dozier. But I would not bet on both of them playing starting caliber G next year.

Love the thought of Maclin vs. Harvin. I doubt we could attract him without paying a super premium, but I love his game.

I think Winters has been a huge disappointment, but I think Oday has been fine. He may be average now, but that will project to above average with more experience. He has sufficient upside to earn more time at G.

I also liked what I was starting to see from Oday. I am looking forward to seeing him in the preseason.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Oday has in preseason too, but that's not the same as counting on him to win a competition at LG, unless that competition is a sham. I think we need to sign at least one veteran guard.

Aboushi was the 43rd ranked G in the NFL, according to PFF, thanks to a +2.4 run blocking and +2.1 penalty score. His overall score was -2.1 however, due to his -6.6 pass blocking score. He's serviceable, and certainly has room for improvement, but I wouldn't get too far out over my skis about Oday. He had some bad moments in pass protection. Not sure he's the answer long-term. But he deserves to show what he's got in camp and the chance to win the job fair and square. I just want to see a legit competition at that (and a lot of other) positions.

With Bowles here and Rex gone I think there will be legit competition all over the field. With no ties to anyone I am sure all we will get is true winners playing.

I wonder if Cro would try out at S. With his long arms and athletic ability I bet he would thrive there.

I like Cro a lot, but S isn't the spot for him. His major weakness is that he isn't a good tackler. He was an alternate to the Pro Bowl last year as a CB.

The Jets are desperate for a decent CB, why convert him to S?

You make a fair point here. Hopefully, his pass blocking improves to where he is an above-average starting G. You can't have stars at every position on the OL, but you can't have holes anywhere, as far as I'm concerned.

Well, I think the college LT was better than that indicated, especially with only 1 year at OG where he wasnt active all year then had to step in for anninjured/ineffective Winters. I thought he was very good in the run game and better than average in space pulling, which I bet he did a lot more than he ever did at tackle. His pass blocking may need some work, but it was hard to notice with how bad the right side of our oline (did we have NFL talent playing RG or RT, seemed like amateur hour most weeks). I'd rather see us give Aboushi another year and completely redo the right side of our oline in 2015.

yeah i forgot about the tackling part. He would not be a good fit there. I want someone who is a bob sanders type playing CF for us.

Hopefully Dee gets healthy and Dex develops into an NFL corner. If we resign Cro we have a solid three for the nickel that is required in these days of Nobody touch a receiver and nobody breathe near Taum football. We keep number 22 for when 4 are needed or to spell one of the other three.

Lions could lose most of their defensive tackles

Last year, the Detroit Lions passed on defensive tackle Aaron Donald with the 10th pick in the draft, opting instead for tight end Eric Ebron. This year, the Lions surely wish they had Aaron Donald instead of Ebron.

Apart from the gulf between their performances as rookies, Donald fills a need that could become far more pronounced for the Lions. Soon.

Take a look at the NFC North potential free agents, as compiled over the weekend by PFT. Due to hit the market on March 10 are Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley, Andre Fluellen, and C.J. Mosley.

The only defensive tackle under contract for Detroit is Princeton rookie (in 2014) Caraun Reid.

The situation gives each of the defensive tackles extra leverage, since the basic principles of economics will make the Lions more desperate than other teams to try to retain a semblance of continuity in the interior of their defensive line.

Jets Sign Former Steelers CB Curtis Brown

Jets sign former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Curtis Brown

The Jets have to wait close to another month until they can make a play for any impact free agents. But on Tuesday, they locked down Curtis Brown, a free agent cornerback who was out of the NFL last season.

Brown, 26, played in 34 games after the Steelers took him 95th overall out of the University of Texas in the 2011 draft. He tore his ACL in November 2013, was released in March of last year, and did not play anywhere during the 2014 season.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Brown did not make any starts at corner in his three seasons with the Steelers, but he was considered to be a valuable special teamer.

It's no secret the Jets need cornerback help. After losing Dee Milliner (Achilles) and Dexter McDougle (ACL) to injuries last season, they made do with a roving cast of characters in what wound up being a 4-12 season. The Jets also signed cornerback DeShaun Phillips to a futures contract shortly after the season. Brown's contract details were not disclosed, but it's likely he received futures contract, too.

The Jets still have a chance to pursue players who played last season for other teams and are scheduled to become free agents, but they're not allowed to negotiate with those players until March 7 and cannot sign any of them until March 10. Former Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who spent last season with the Cardinals, has made no secret of his desire to return to One Jets Drive.
