Generally speaking, I have been mostly supportive of Todd Bowles, critical when I felt criticism was justified, but far more of a supporter than a critic, so I can't be accused of having an agenda.
I say that to say this, IMO MaineJet, despite his admitted affection for Rex Ryan and suspicions of Todd Bowles, is making a fair point about Bowles where it pertains to Geno and his bizarre behavior (as I see it) with this backup QB competition, if you can even call it a competition, and I have my doubts based on his own words and deeds.
I think Bowles is playing with fire here, and yes, it threatens to cost him the support of Jets fans if he's not careful. The affection of the Jets faithful is always a tenuous proposition at best. You can lose it just as fast as you gained it if your decisions enter the realm of inexplicable and indefensible, and unpopular too, and I fear Bowles is flirting with all three with this Geno/Petty debacle. Nobody with two eyes believes Geno is outplaying Petty this year.
Why he is so enamored with Geno Smith is a mystery too me. As I've said before, its not like this regime drafted him thus they have a personal investment in his success or failure (like Petty). THEY DIDN'T and THEY DON'T, which makes this all the more unusual, and its not like they are bound to him contractually over the long haul whether they like it or not, thus they have to make the best of a bad situation. That is not the case either, as he is in the last year of his contract. So unless he is being showcased for a trade, as some of you have pointed out, and I accept that possibility, but unless thats what this is really all about, and we'll know very soon (and I have my doubts), what we are seeing here is hard to explain and it threatens to blow-up in Bowles face if Fitz gets hurt and Geno gets the first chance to wreck our season, or if, GOD FORBID, keeping Geno costs us Bryce Petty or one of these talented young WR's.
Either way Bowles seems to be playing with fire here, and its awfully hard to understand why.
