The problem is that Macc and Bowles are trying to keep their jobs in a rebuilding year. Anyone who looks objectively at this team knows that 2017 is going to be an evaluation year. We're going to find out whether or not a lot of young players are worthy of playing on this team. That extends beyond the QB position. And Maccagnan and Bowles are widely considered "under the gun" to show improvement from last season. I'm not sure it's realistic to expect that to happen if we're truly in rebuilding mode.
IMO, the best thing to do is to release all the vets making big money. That includes Revis, Harris, Marshall, Gilchrist, and maybe even Decker. Yes, we'll struggle for a few years with an extremely young, developing team. But that is how the great teams are built: from the ground up. It's a risk, but the team has to change its strategy for once. No more "competitive rebuilds". We tried that a few times. It didn't work.
Why do you say under the gun... Woody said that they didn't have to make the PO just be competitive and getting better.

it's not a given the jets are going to be competitive & get better in '17..Why do you say under the gun... Woody said that they didn't have to make the PO just be competitive and getting better.
typo??After last year's disaster, Woody is going to want to see progress. Understandably so. But if the team continues to cut some of the best players on the team, Bowles is going to be placed in a very tough position: be better with less talent on your roster. If we continue to trim the fat off this team, and go with a lot of young and unproven players, I just don't see how it can be accomplished.
Woody has got to know that this team will more than likely finish below .500. Maybe even well below it. My guess is that as long as the Jets aren't getting destroyed in games next year, that Bowles and Macc will be safe for 2019. But the fans and media will be all over them right around a 1-5 start to the season.
typo??
is a full blown rebuild shitty, especially after a shitty season?? no argument from me.. no sympathy from me either..I'm not high on Todd Bowles, either. I'm just trying to get inside Woody Johnson's head. Does Woody realize this team is going to take a few steps backwards next year? Or is he expecting Macc/Bowles to improve with a questionable roster in 2018? Regardless of how you feel about Bowles, it's a shitty deal. If Woody is willing to go through the growing pains of a rebuild, he just might extend the rope on Bowles and Macc.
I hope all of this discussion of cap space doesn't get anyone's hopes up for a playoff run. I'd hate it if after generating approximately $50 M in cap space, MM went out and blew it all on a bunch of free agents who will be cut after two years. Save the money for home grown guys who deserve the pay day. We have way too much work to do in developing and keeping our own players before we can worry about playoffs or whatever reason for spending foolishly.
typo??
OK. First post in this thread says Jets had $29M cap space before cutting Revis. This article

says Jets have $27M cap space after cutting Revis. I'm confused. How much cap space do the Jets have now?
