Actually for some bizarre reason some posters hate Pennington with a passion. I'm not one of them.
I was not a Pennington fan later in his career because like Petty he was UNABLE to make plays. I think almost all of the QB stats are pretty much useless, comp %, QB rating, QBR, even INTs mostly.
What matters is making plays. What can you do on 3rd and long? When the offensive line breaks down can you escape the pocket and make a play down field, or some positive yards on the ground? In the late parts of a game or final drive can you throw the medium to deep out to get yards and keep clock? Can you handle blitz?
Fitz and Pennington before him, can do none of these. They will have respectable stats with checkdowns and short passes and by nature they will somewhat limit turnovers but when the game is on the line we will fail.
So some will say when we are 1-3 that it is not Fitz' fault after all he has 60% completions, a decent QB rating and maybe a positive TD/INT ratio. But he will not win any games.
This is the reason he has NEVER won more than 6 games in a year. Ever. Geno has, because unlike Fitz he can make those plays on occasion when needed, and he has.
I think that the Jets will redshirt Petty for at least 8 games. It is still the Geno and Fitz show this year. When Fitz fails or he is injured, Geno will go back in and get his last shot.
But we may have seen the future yesterday in Petty. One thing he has that Geno has not shown and Fitz does not have either is that elite ability to recognize and throw almost instantly. With Geno and Fitz there is always that little extra beat.
