The Jets are dragging their feet on filling their coaching staff. No positional coaches named yet. No special teams coach.
Wouldn't loose sleep if Chan Gaily wasn't our O Coord/

I wasn't at first but the more I read about him the more I think he'd be able to get the most out of Geno than any other candidate.

Not happy about it but we need to make the best of the situation we are dealt with. We won eight games with Geno at the helm and the 2013 team was real crappy. I think we can win more with some improvement.

Let's hope the Jets:

1) Find some journeyman vet QB who can compete with Geno

2) Don't trade up to get Mariota.

Do you think Mariota will flat out suck at the next level? I think he'll be good but not right away. He needs to sit a few years.

Trust me, the Jets will not pursue Mariota. I know it for a fact

There are no better free agent QB this year. Geno is better than all of them.

I am going on history, plus his play in the college champ game. The only Heisman-winning QB's who have done anything in the NFL are Staubach and Plunkett. Maybe Testaverde, if you want to stretch it a bit. That says the overwhelming odds are that Mariota will suck on the pro level. If he falls to us at the 6th pick, maybe he's worth the risk. But if the Jets trade up, I will know the latest FO hires are once again a bunch of clowns. Please don't let it happen.

Nice post. Can't disagree with anything that you said here.

Does the sun never shine on your world? Are you being overly pessimistic about Geno?

I was very critical about Geno this year. I made one post about him improving statistically and all of a sudden, I'm a big Geno fan?

From what I read (and who knows if it's true) I believe Gailey might be good for Geno. Geno has some weird stats, which leads me to think he may be salvageable. He's great when he throws the ball within 2.5 seconds. I don't know what that may signal.

I believe gailey would have gotten the best out of smith. I do think a stopgap like moore would prob beat geno out if their was a fair QB competition in TC.

Gailey has done fairly well as an OC with bad QB's. Geno might be stretching Gailey's ability's a bit. Smith has been close to the worst QB in the NFL 2 year's running. His stats are bad, and worst yet, he just doesn't pass the "eye test". He just doesn't look like he has a clue what he's doing out there.

If Gailey, or someone else can get him to look like he's at least a middle of the pack QB, Great. I have my doubts

If they can obtain a better QB, sure get another starter. I would have preferred RG3, or Sam Bradford, both of whom are probably not going to be available. But I would not simply part ways with Geno simply because he's been awful. He has some weird numbers, showing strengths in certain areas. His performance under 2.5 seconds is very good (Last time I looked it was top five). As I said, I don't know what that means. He also improved year over year in QB Rating, Completion % and interception % (which surprised me). He performed better after the Harvin acquisition. (I wonder if someone has his numbers with Harvin actually on the field.) He looks like he has a strong arm. He needs to perform better under pressure. And the Jets line needs to reduce the number of pressures they allow on him. To some extent they did that after Abousi replaced Winters.

That aside, I am frustrated that Gailey has not been finalized and we don't know who's going to coach Special Teams.

Just wondering, what does the fact that the Jets signed a LB'ers coach have to do with whether Gailey becomes OC?

This was never a slam dunk deal. He was invited to interview with another team I remember. Can't remember who. He is 63 years old. He has been out of football two years. He has had 2 H C jobs, so he's probably not broke. Perhaps he just wants to retire, or talk to his family about if he should go back into the grind.

This seems to me to be a media created story form the get go.

even if that's true, no way smith should just be handed the job.. again..

I would prefer someone other than Geno to start for the Jets next year, but that looks unlikely to me.

This year's crop of FA QB's is less than inspiring. Vick will be sent packing and it will be a no-brainer to bring in a veteran who can compete with Geno. IMO, whoever that person is, they will be unlikely to win a QB competition with Geno.

I believe a smart GM will not trade up in the draft for one the QB's this year. It only makes sense to trade up IF there is a "can't miss" prospect available. There is no such QB available this year so I do not think the Jets will do this.

Once you accept the fact that Geno will likely be starting, then you must do whatever can be done to maximize Geno's potential. If this means bringing in Chan Gailey, then that's what should be done.

Why hasn't that been done yet? I can think of only three possibilities:

1) Chan doesn't want the job.
2) Negotiations are taking longer than normal.
3) Bowles has someone else in mind... or is at least exploring the possibilities.

It will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds.
