Casserly said that on the NFL Network, and we all know he's tight with Mac, Casserly is one of his mentors.

So is this the inside skinny on what Mac is thinking?

I don't think he said he was next Snacks. I think he said he was drafted in 7th round is almost like going undrafted like Snacks.

Simon doesn't have to be great. He just needs to be good. He's got a couple of studs on both sides of him, so that should help.

Look at the size of those arms, the damn things are like tree trunks, reminds me of Kris Jenkins.

Thats a good sign for a NT because it indicates power, especially when its natural and not artificial.

Those are not weightlifters arms. Like BIG JENKS, those are just raw-bone country boy arms.

I'll believe it when I see it on the field. In the mean time, the Jets have a GIGANTIC, gaping hole in the middle of the defense.

We'll be alright. Getting a run stuffer has proven to not be that difficult for the Jets. Before Snacks, there was Mike Devito. All you need is a big body. This could be a blessing in disguise. We should go after somewhere that can get pressure up the middle. If we can sign a DT that brings pressure up the middle then that bodes well for the rest of the defense. Harrison was great and occupied blockers but rarely did he ever get to the QB

The Jets lost a two down player, who offered zero pass rush. Yes, he was a great run stuffer, but finding a replacement for him won't be that difficult. Hardly the "gaping hole" you overdramatize it to be.

Ever since we went to the 3-4 defense we have had the NT that can stop the run from Jason Ferguson to Snacks.. So I agree with you Blindside this looks like the one spot we can lose a player and shouldn't have to much difficulty replacing..... Simon looks like he can fit the bill...... And the reality is Snacks was an Undrafted guy.... Ferguson was a 7th rd pick if memory serves me right. Run stuffing 3-4 NT seems like they are easy to find.... Pass rushing OLB.... welll therein lies why our defenses have always been very good to great but never the best!!!

well said.

On a separate note, Snacks was a class act. Did you guys see his facebook video to us jets fans? I'll try to post it.

saw the video.... I'm happy for Snacks. Hardworking dude.. Good guy... Deserves the big payday.... Unfortunately that's not a contract we should dole out for a NT.... Regardless of if we had cap space or not..

If we were talking about a rex Ryan defense, I would tend to agree with you MJ. But I don't think Bowles is so reliant on a dominant run-stuffing nose. To me his defense is predicated on guys who offer more flexibility. To the extent that we may have to use a typical NT against certain teams, then Simon may fit the bill. Is that worth what we would have had to spend to keep Snacks; I don't think so. JMO.

From a money standpoint I agree with you completely. He got a lot of money from the Giants. But Todd Bowles made a name for himself in Arizona with that up front trap where two DE's will cut in as they get into the backfield and shrink the pocket. The ONLY way that works is if you have a NT that can hold his ground. Snacks was great at specific scheme.

I am also pretty excited about what Deon Simon has to offer, but I'm sorry this guy is NO ready to replace Snacks Harrison at the drop of a hat.

In fact, I hear Simon has been labeled as being "LAZY" about learning his job. So here you have a guy that has NOT seen the field much at all since being drafted. He's way behind the learning curve for his job. He's also been labeled as lazy.

What I just mentioned does not fix itself over night. There's work to be done with Deon Simon to get him working and understanding what his responsibilities are.

Hence the reason I say we have a GIGANTIC, gaping hole at NT right now or at least for however long it's going to take for Deon Simon to show his value, because the fact is he's NOTHING right now other than a very strong kid that has never seen the field.
