Charlie Casserly???

Well he is not going to be perfect I was just pointing out he is not as bad a GM as you made him out to be.

I don't think he's a bad GM ... I honestly don't know. I just know his results were mixed and, to his credit, he pointed out Belichick's cheating in 2006. I enjoy his commentary when he reports as an NFL "insider". Bellichick's quote is something I should not have mentioned. But to be accurate it was something like "since he's left Washington, who's been more wrong than Charlie Casserly."

But he's not infallible obviously. Neither is Idzik. Casserly drafted Shuler with the number 3 overall, Idzik drafted Geno with his 2d rounder was it the 40th pick??). Advantage Idzik? I guess.

Like I said I am 50-50 on idzick, I just don't see him surviving.

His 1991 draft was awful. He missed out on Brian Cox, Mo Lewis and Brett Favre (among at least a dozen future pro bowlers. You can do this second guessing thing all day. Is it fair? Probably not. But that's how the press and the fans are judging Idzik.

Moreover, this guy is retained to choose our new Head Coach? He's no better than Idzik in drafting. What makes you think he's any good at selecting a Head Coach or a GM?

Charlie Casserly???

The more I look into it, the more I wonder if Woody knows what he’s doing. He’s retaining Charlie Casserly as a consultant to retain a GM and a Head Coach? What qualifies Casserly as an expert in retaining Head Coaches? I understand he has a position with the NFL where he knows of qualified candidates, but when he was the GM of the Washington Redskins he hired Ritchie Petitbon (who was 4-12) and then went with Norv Turner (who was 49-59-1.)

As GM of the Texans he hired Dom Capers who was awful, and Kubiak who wasn't much better.

Thanks to the “FireJohnIdzik” crew! Here’s to you gentlemen!! We’re looking forward to the likes of Norv Turner and Dom Capers!

I'd like to add my vote for this thread in the first annual Dumbest Thread at NYJF competition when Elias and Renegade decide to announce it

In 29 hours or so, Idzik and WRECKS will both be gone from the Jets. Thankfully, Woody has finally decided to use football people to hire the football people needed to right the Jet ship.

Do a little more homework. Not sure you have enough knowledge to make a judgment on these guys.

He was GM when the Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1992.

Best move Casserly made was getting all of the Saints picks in 1999 plus their 1st and 3rd for 2000 for the 1999 5th pick in the draft when the Saints took Ricky Williams..

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I don't think he was stubborn or anything like that. Look at what happened: he made a very good offer to the CB who decided to stay with the Colts. He was a good bet AND he turned out that he's played well. The rest of the available CBs pretty much were either not matches for Rex or they were over-priced. He decided to go with Milliner and MacDougal and backed it up with Patterson and Walls. Disaster struck. Milliner and MacDougal were IR'd and Patterson did what no one could predict: he committed career suicide. Who could have predicted that? 3/4 of your CBs gone almost before the season began. Now you look back and say "hey you should have signed players X, Y and Z." Sure, in hindsight he should have signed 3 other CBs. But who could have seen 3/4 of your CBs gone.

Hindsight is most accurate. The chain of events causing the Jets to lose CB after CB this season has been almost unbelievable. That said, my problem with how Idzik handled the situation occurred BEFORE the curse. I wanted him to retain Cromartie (who by the way, had an excellent year in Arizona). He miscalculated, thinking he could replace him with someone for less money. I also think he should have never let Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie leave the building without signing a contract. Again, he stubbornly stuck to his guns. I think he is well intentioned but he doesn't know when to give in.

The clincher on this issue was Revis. If Woody denied Idzik's desire to sign Revis then you can't blame Idzik. If Idzik expressed a lukewarm desire to sign Revis then sure, you should blame him. One day maybe we'll know.

Agreed.

One last side issue. Everyone points to what a genius Rex is on defense. How could this genius be predicated on one simple linchpin: the cover corner. Seems pretty simple to me to have CBs who can shut down the other team's best receiver. Once you give a D coordinator that advantage, where's the genius? You take out your opponent's best receiver. You have a great defensive line controlling the LOS.

I think you are oversimplifying Rex's scheme. I don't profess to be an expert, but I do know it's not all about shutting the receiver down. Rex's defense (as are most) is largely about making the QB uncomfortable, thereby causing poor play. When the secondary provides good coverage on the receivers it forces the QB to hold onto the ball longer than he would like, affording the pass rushers more time to get to the QB. There are 2 ways you can get sacks. One is to have excellent pass rushers. The other is to have excellent coverage in the secondary to allow decent pass rushers time to get to the QB. Rex successfully employs the later method. This also gives him time send in disguised blitzes and sometimes even a pass rusher from the secondary.

Quick question for you. It is more than likely that Idzik is no longer the GM of the Jets after tomorrow. Of that is the case, what candidate do you want leading the Jets?

I am doing more research. The more I look, the more mediocre he appears. Please, if I'm wrong tell me. (I WANT to be wrong about this). He drafted Heath Schuler with the number 3 pick. But I wanted to leave it at his history in selecting coaches. He's selected 4 coaches. 3 of those 4 were pretty bad. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I see. What am I missing?

Today Jay Glazer ripped the Jets for inquiring about the availability of a particular coach. He said it was typical Jets fashion. It turns out the agent of the potential coaching candidate was also Rex Ryan's agent. That's likely Casserly call he's talking about.

I'm just saying that there was no reason to start another thread to pound your lone opinion down everyone's throat.

They added the Charlie Casserly comments to this Idzik thread. They should have combined it with the your other thread. Mods?

By the way ... it's not my opinion. It's more like a fear.

At least Casserly has had some success in his career. Idzik's only claim to fame is to be able to get rid of debt and not spend. Dave Ramsey would love him!!
