Hindsight is most accurate. The chain of events causing the Jets to lose CB after CB this season has been almost unbelievable. That said, my problem with how Idzik handled the situation occurred BEFORE the curse. I wanted him to retain Cromartie (who by the way, had an excellent year in Arizona). He miscalculated, thinking he could replace him with someone for less money. I also think he should have never let Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie leave the building without signing a contract. Again, he stubbornly stuck to his guns. I think he is well intentioned but he doesn't know when to give in.

I think you are oversimplifying Rex's scheme. I don't profess to be an expert, but I do know it's not all about shutting the receiver down. Rex's defense (as are most) is largely about making the QB uncomfortable, thereby causing poor play. When the secondary provides good coverage on the receivers it forces the QB to hold onto the ball longer than he would like, affording the pass rushers more time to get to the QB. There are 2 ways you can get sacks. One is to have excellent pass rushers. The other is to have excellent coverage in the secondary to allow decent pass rushers time to get to the QB. Rex successfully employs the later method. This also gives him time send in disguised blitzes and sometimes even a pass rusher from the secondary.
