I have acknowledged the Bengals are better. I might stop at "much" better, but the Bengals are better all around.

The stadium will be rocking and it's the first game of the season. I see the game as a tossup. Revis on AJ Green and help at safety will contain him. Forte/Powell needs a big game for us. We need to have time of possession to have a shot at this one; however, if our D gets to Dalton and he hears footsteps this game could go our way. Oh yeah we need homefield advantage and that includes the Refs.

The Bengals are beatable. Their qb is average, I'll never be scared of a team that's led by Dalton. Likewise for them, they should not be worried about Fitz.

Both teams rely on the mistakes of the other team to win it. If the Jets come out flat and make mistakes they will lose. As seen in the Raiders games and Eagles games of last year.

coming out flat for more than 25% of our games (again) in year two under bowles would be a huge red flag in my eyes..

i'm hopeful bowles has made some adjustments as far as having his guys ready to go balls to the wall each & every game..

i know that's a neat trick for any head coach to pull off but it definitely is the goal..

Well, even Parcells had those games where the team would go out flat. It happens. But 90% of the time those teams came ready to do war. Even more convincing was rarely if ever did Parcells teams lose in December. They almost always went on a winning streak and were a very tough out late in the season.

Bowles, on the other hand, had his team show up flat and uninspired in at least 5 of their 6 losses from last season. That is not a good sign. So, yes, I will be hoping for the very same thing you are........

The problem is, Bowles played for a team of self starters in Washington. Joe Gibbs was not a rah rah guy, not a motivator in the traditional sense, he was more of a cerebral HC, and when you are that kind of coach, you need self starters and your leaders on the field have to lead, they have to set the example by going balls to the wall and demanding the same from everyone else. They had that in Washington during the Joe Gibbs era. That team was never flat. They came every Sunday to kick your ass, and most of the time they did exactly that.

The same was true of those 70's Steelers teams. Chuck Noll looked like a tough guy and he was, but he was not a motivator, all of the old Steelers have talked about it, how Noll never raised his voice or gave pep talks, his idea of a pep talk was to tell a joke, and his jokes were corny too, none of the players ever laughed, but when you suited up against those Steelers on Sunday, they would beat you to a bloody pulp. That team was never flat. If you came out flat, Joe Greene and Jack Lambert would kick your ass. Those guys were ABOUT BUSINESS and everybody followed their lead.

Thats why Tony Dungy was never a screamer, never a rah rah guy, never what you would call a motivator. He played on those Steelers teams and Noll was basically his mentor, ditto Bowles and Joe Gibbs.

DON'T GET ME WRONG, if you don't have the right kind of players, that approach will get you beat in games you should win. I would argue it really bit us in the ass in that last Buffalo game. I'll go to my grave believing Buffalo was more fired up to win that game for Rex than we were to make the damn playoffs. Thats why you're seeing such a dramatic turnover in personnel. Thats why the underachievers and chronically injuries guys are going out. I see what Bowles is trying to do, he's trying to build a team of self starters like his Redskins teams, but you can't build that culture overnight.

parcells was not a believer in bowles' "no one game is more important then another" philosophy..

that's something else i'm hopeful bowles has figured out going into his sophomore season..

A couple of quotes from Bengays forum:

" Jet fans. They fear A.J. Green. Giovanni Bernard is their other concern. On gdefense Atkins has them sweating bullets and they're relieved Eifert is out.

They believe Revis can totally negate Green, and their linebackers can contain our running backs.

I beg to differ."
Cocky bastard

My main impression of the Jets is their defensive interior is terrifying. I can't remember their names, and I'm in the drive thru line at Panda Express right now so research not happening, but last year those guys just tore shit up. And it was all pretty much right up the middle. Bodine is going to get tested."
Smart fan

"The Jets lost to Buffalo. Twice. The second time with the playoffs at stake. The Bengals had no such issue againstthe Bills. We've got this"

This game really comes down to two things IMO:

  • Can the right side of the offensive line hold up, especially against Atkins and Dunlap who could brutalize jailbreak Winters and whomever we start at RT. We will have to focus on short quick passes and leave the back in for extra protection. Cinci will absolutely exploit this weakness.
  • Can our linebackers cover Bernard and Hill on screens and short passes. We are short on experience on the outside.

Some of the other positives are no Eifert at TE or Burfict at LB. Their linebackers are not the fastest and their slot CB Dennard is hurting. We should be exploit Enuna in the seams.

I'm also curious to see also how we hold up against the run. No Sheldon for the first game and of course no Snacks in the middle taking up two offensive lineman. I would double AJ and have Revis cover Boyd one-on-one.

Jets 16 - Bengals 13 and don't feel good about it. I picked the Bengals in weekly picks.

Its unconventional because I know you normally double the #1 WR (Green) the way you suggested, by putting your #2 CB and FS or Nickel on the #1 WR and letting your #1 CB play single coverage verses their #2 WR (Boyd), but Green is so good, so capable of wrecking the game, that I would shun convention here and double him WITH Revis, then let the #2 CB (Skrine) play man coverage verses Boyd. I think if we contain Green we win the game, so I'm pulling out all the stops.

Yes me worry.
The right side of the O-line plus I'll be holding my breath on each offensive play until I see Clady walking back to the huddle.

How about the D create a turnover or 3?

If the Red Rifle & Co. don't march down the field at will on the first possession (like teams did early last season) I'll grow some optimism.

completely agree..

there's no crime in giving revis some help against all world WR's at this point in his career..

we'll see soon enough..

I think you give Revis help now and then - so the offense needs to think more. If you mix that in and they fail to see it, revis will jump the route when he has deep help - and take the ball

In reference to Revis covering AJ Green? I would leave him on an island with Green. I still completely believe Revis is a superstar that shut down the very best WR's with no Safety over the top. Revis was injured last season, so his play slipping a little is understandable. Right now he's healthy and I believe he'll make AJ Green his b*tch...

maine, if revis is still "the man," it's a long enough season to let him ease back onto his "island," so to speak..

the first 6 games are too rough, on paper at least.. i don't want to watch green beat us by himself week one at home..

the way i see it, the risk & reward is out of wack..

Totally agree with my friend J13, why mess around with it, Green is their only receiver who scares anyone, an all world talent who can wreck the game all by himself if you're not careful. This is not the time for a vanity play, so we can prove Revis is still Revis. There will be plenty of season left for that after this game, but for this week its all about containing AJ Green, do that and we probably win this game.

The x-factor in the back 4 will be Pryor as evidenced by Odell Becham's reaction to his presence on the Revis pick. Guys like Green might be looking for #25 coming across for the kill shot and impact their focus.

In a vacuum, I'd agree with you....But letting him "ease" his way back into things is not a luxury this team can afford IMO. They are playing a real live contender RIGHT NOW.....

yep, very happy to see Pryor develop the way he has. It wasn't looking too good his rookie year.
