Countdown to Combine: New York Jets WRs

A closer look at the areas the New York Jets could address in the draft. We'll continue Tuesday with a look at the wide receiver position, which is scheduled to work out Saturday in Indianapolis.

Position of need: The Jets can help their quarterback (whoever it is) by upgrading at wide receiver. They haven't had a Pro Bowl receiver since Keyshawn Johnson in 1999, a remarkable drought in a pass-happy league. Eric Decker is a good No. 2 receiver and Percy Harvin is ... well, we're not sure what he is. He could be a goner by March 19, the deadline by which the Jets must decide his 2015 status, per the conditions of last fall's trade with the Seattle Seahawks. If they drop Harvin, the position becomes a major need. The last time they used a first-round pick on a wide receiver was Santana Moss in 2001.

Three players the Jets could target in the draft:

Amari Cooper (WR), Alabama: He can lock up a top-6 spot by running a fast 40 at the combine. Cooper doesn't have sprinter's speed, but he's a terrific route runner with separation ability. His size isn't ideal (listed at 6-foot-1 by his school), but look what Odell Beckham, Jr. (6-foot) is doing to the league. Cooper put up monster numbers last season (124 catches for 1,727 yards), and the best part? He's known for his tremendous work ethic.

Kevin White (WR), West Virginia: He's one of the fastest risers in the draft. White, who spent his early childhood in Plainfield, New Jersey, played only two years at West Virginia after transferring from a junior college. Some people are talking about him as a possible top-10 pick. He's a little raw, but he has the size (6-foot-2) and skills to be a good one. He caught 109 passes for 1,447 yards last season. His ceiling is exceptionally high.

Devante Parker (WR), Louisville: He missed the first seven games last season due to a preseason foot injury, but he erased any doubts about his health by finishing with 43 receptions and 855 yards over the final six games. Parker would help a quarterback like Geno Smith because of his catching radius; he's 6-foot-2 with long arms. Like White, he's rated as a likely top-15 pick by many scouting services.

AFC scout on Green-Beckham: "If not for all that stuff, he'd be the best receiver to come out since Calvin Johnson." http://www.nfl.com/combine/story/0ap3000000470919/article/dorial-greenbeckham-hits-combine-with-major-talentconcerns …

I really wonder where he goes. If we traded down with Cleveland or the Eagles, I think he becomes in play mid to late rd 1 unless teams throw out the baggage, then he goes top 10.

Dorial Green-Beckham - WR - Player
An AFC scout calls Missouri WR Dorial Green-Beckham "special," and believes he'd be considered the best receiver prospect since Calvin Johnson if not for his off-the-field issues.
"He's one of the best receivers I've ever seen," the scout said. "He's gigantic, he has tremendous body control, balance, he runs like a deer and can leap out of the gym and high-point the ball." Green-Beckham was a five-star recruit out of high school, but couldn't stay out of trouble at Mizzou, getting caught with marijuana before being accused of domestic violence. He transferred to Oklahoma, but had to sit out because of the NCAA's transfer rules. DGB is a top-10 talent who could fall to day two because of his character question marks.
