This would be an ideal Saleh/Ulbrich starting group. Outside CJ Mosley we have no other traditional linebacker they are all safeties. So with Jamien Sherwood unlikely to start the season he could start the year on the PUP list. This way they have more versatility, to play the pass while stifle the run. Michael Carter II earned a role but also he played safety in college, he has to be on the field he earned that right and this way gives us a true single high safety.

Moving forward a player like Jason Pinnock could replace Joyner as safety. Could Ashtyn Davis have a role on this defense, yes depth behind Whitehead. They signed Marcell Harris as insurance behind Mosley. DQ Thomas if he makes the roster has the ability to be the backup 'Mike' role to Sherwood and has potential both as a run stuffer and coverage linebacker.

In that entire write up there’s no mention of Quincy Williams. Did I miss a move by the front office?

no I just believe he is not a starter, he was like Calvin Pryor last year looking to lay the wood rather than make the tackle and whiffed on many of them. yes they used him more towards the end of the season but there is no reason he has to start.

Robert Saleh is known for his defensive schemes. He is known for his position versatility among the linebackers and safeties, to him the way it seems they are one position. Last year we ran a lot of 4-2-5 sets and why would that change this year? It won't but they went out and got a safety that thrives and lives in the box, so why would he not continue. Yes he is short, but he plays like a linebacker why not give him that role side by side with CJ Mosley.

When they don't have a nickel corner, DJ Reed on the field they can bring in a 3rd linebacker like Quincy, like Marcell even Nasirildeen. Until we find the proper roles for each player we have on the roster you want to put the best of what you have on the field. And Quincy Williams is a good role guy but not a starter. You can gripe about it, but I am not the only one that sees that in Williams.

43 base alignments for 2022 will have a combination of CJ Mosley, Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood eventually. But in the nickel alignments seeing Whitehead, Ashtyn Davis and a player like Jason Pinnock rotate in the box is plausible.

What about Jordan Whitehead over Joyner at safety and Jermaine Johnson II over J. Martin at RE or LE? Who is Jacob Martin anyway? Also how about Quincy Williams at the other LB spot? Why would Whitehead be starting over Q. Williams at LB and not safety? All these predictions make no sense to me, please explain?

Jordan Whitehead is listed under 200 pounds.
Even Larry Grantham played at around 205 pounds. He was worn down and lighter in SB III, but he didn't make more than one tackle in that game.
There's always a discussion about about quickness VS size. But a good big man will always be better than a good smaller man (talent level being equal) when it comes to stopping the run.
I don't like this alignment - at ALL.
They would get steamrolled.

Jermaine Johnson and Carl Lawson are the DE’s. JFM and Q are inside.

Jordan Whitehead and Lamarcus Joyner are the safeties

Michael Carter II will be a slot CB. DJ Reed and Guidry will rotate in.

Sauce Gardner and DJ Reed will be CB 1 and 2 on the outside. Bryce Hall will push Reed.

I have no idea what the LB plan is besides CJ Mosley starting at one spot. I think Saleh/Ulbrich like Nasirldeen and Sherwood.

Jacob Martin anyway?
Jacob Martin played predominately on the right side.

In this defense Carl Lawson should play the left side because of his style.

Jermaine Johnson will be given all the time to earn the starting role but from what I was told he is not there yet. Could see him split time behind Lawson, since they will be implementing the snap count. Not saying JJ is similar to Lawson but could bring that stability of rotation.

The other side with Jacob Martin need more of a quicker DE and Bryce Huff opens that door along with Clemons. Now Clemons is bigger but his pursuit ability allows scheme flexibility.

Whitehead lived in the box. To consider him a linebacker in the 4-2-5 scheme which I believe we will be running a lot makes sense.

From what I saw myself they had both Sauce & Hall on the outside (perimeter) with DJ Reed taking snaps inside. Now this means nothing. The matchups we will be able to offer will determine who is on the field at any given time. But Reed will play more than Hall but Hall gives the team that big bodied corner that can take on Tight Ends. Running Backs.

If you look at the roster base 43 personnel will be 3 Linebackers the health of Sherwood is key otherwise they will have to go to an alternate option. Maybe DQ Thomas. Marcell Harris was brought in to be depth for CJ Mosley. Last year they explored trading Mosley and there is noise again that if the right offer comes along they will consider it.

Quincy Williams entering contract year, will need to have a huge year to get a payday but right now after last season they are frustrated with his unwillingness to wrap up tackle ball carriers. Now they spoke and he understands going for the big hit, then missing the tackle hurts the team and he admitted that in a presser.

Nasirildeen to me right now is special teams at best. Not sure if Del'Shawn Phillips makes the roster but like Mosley he is a good run defender.

Base 43 CJ Mosley, Sherwood, Quincy
Wide 9/4-2-5 CJ Mosley, Jordan Whitehead
Nickel 5-2-4 CJ Mosley, Quincy
Under 43 CJ Mosley, Marcell Harris, Quincy

That is my prediction. But depth and the future of CJ Mosley could change the overall outlook of this linebacker group.

On draft day, I found the following to be a bit annoying. Prior to the senior bowl, we were hearing comparisons to the 70s like how the Jets found Lyons and Gastineau while coaching the senior bowl and so I was expecting the more of the same this year. At the draft, outside of Ruckert, we selected players coached by the Lions...players we didn't really learn anything about from coaching. And for all we know, Ruckert got in the staff's ears. We arguably didn't find anyone from coaching the senior bowl.

I think Jermaine Johnson is a good player but I still don't know how he fits into this defense. His measurables (height and weight) don't seem to be a good match for us. I'm hoping they're off as these tidbits of information usually are. I was interested to see where you had him placed in your predicted starting defense.

he is raw with potential. he is a good run defender but his pass rush is limited. pass rush arsenal is weak at this point. he has violent hands but to anoint him the starting role would be foolish. he literally could be Carl Lawson' replacement, but needs time to grow. with the team going to deploy % snaps, JJ coming off the bench is not a bad thing. We need tone setters to start the game. We know injuries will happen, covid will hinder some players. could not hack it at UGA so he transfers to FSU guaranteed a starting role, to me lesser competition and he shined but you saw he slipped in the draft. The Jets tried to trade up as high as 15 to get him and were lucky at 26 to move back into the first but some speculation his rawness he could of fell to the 2nd round.

as for Ruckert, he left the Senior Bowl due to the death of his grandfather. He was on our squad. he is athletic enough to be a threat in the passing game. he is good open field blocker who has a nasty streak but his pass blocking is sub par. he can take the punch but his technique and footwork are poor to say the least. contact balance suffers when a power defender bull rushes him. can he sustain, yes but at this time consider him TE4 behind Trevon Wesco and our 2 free agent signings. Ruckert could unseat Nick Bawden if they want to use him in that FB role.

$14 M a year to rotate in, sure!!!

No, what I said was that Reed could rotate into either the #2 or slot CB position. Bryce Hall and Michael Carter II were good last year. Reed will play a lot. But I expect a significant rotation within the secondary, similar to what we’ll see on the d-line. The CB rotation will involve Sauce, Reed, Hall, Carter, Echols, and Guidry.

what I said would have DJ Reed, Bryce Hall, Sauce Gardner, Michael Carter II all on the field at the same time. They are the best players we have and deserve to be on the field. DJ Reed matchups against the speed slot receivers. Both Hall & Sauce have the length to take on those lanky tall esq receivers. Does not stop Reed from playing on the outside. Bryce Hall could matchup as a slot guy against the tight ends, even running backs when we have three corners on the field.

with Carter II he is the fourth corner on the field but he has ability to play safety. Reasons why Jordan Whitehead plays in the box can be considered that Kam Chancellor role at linebacker. CJ Mosley & Whitehead in 4-2-5 Nickel defenses. Can throw in Quincy with Sherwood in 43 Base & Under sets. Whitehead moves back to safety in those sets with MC2, Joyner & Pinnock.

Does your defense speculation suggest that you think Sauce will be CB3? Just wondering.

I think numbers are meaningless when it starts technically he would be CB2. Think signing DJ Reed he is CB1. Bryce Hall will be the CB3 so to speak but will lineup both on the perimeter and in the slot.

Believe they all will work inside and on the perimeter. Matchups will be key. DJ Reed can lineup on the perimeter but when facing larger receivers it will give those opportunities to Bryce Hall. Reed has unbelievable quickness more than Hall so matchups against those shifty slot receivers that are considered Top 2 on their teams depth chart will be handled by Reed.

I first looked at Bryce Hall as a possible conversion to safety but his range is limited. He has excellent closing burst as seen in his highlights. Ability to close out on receivers and break up passes. Has the ability to make the tackle in open field. But his long speed is the question and for a safety he would need both speed and quickness. He has the twitch but not enough juice. Reasons why his play against Tight Ends and some Running backs makes perfect sense.

Hall is a number 1 corner, but he has some questions. He can handle the perimeter well, his numbers prove it. But he is not shy facing bigger opponents and with his game would give an advantage to us have him roaming inside and on the perimeter.

last year we ran a number of sets. by the end of the season maybe more to injuries we ran the 4-2-5. Which means normal four down linemen but only two linebackers. This means we either have three safeties or three corners on the field. They could go one step further in have three corners and three safeties on the field with one traditional linebacker.

there is no coincident that the one thing we needed was an in the box linebacker and they sign the in the box safety. we know Saleh prefers the coverage linebacker which nowadays is the hybrid safety linebacker. look at our roster the traditional linebacker CJ Mosley once a 265 lb 34 MLB is now a 231 lb 43 OLB. I would still want him as the 'Mike' because the MLB in a 43 is traditionally a run stopper and he is one of the best. But in this scenario they went with a highly proficient safety that has excellent football IQ to be the man to build around for now and the future. The role for CJ is mind boggling he plays the coverage linebacker role but fails in coverage. He does take proper pursuit angles majority of the time. There were questions last year the Jets sought out trade option on CJ. Well he could be on the block again especially with the signing of Marcell Harris who plays in the role CJ is now.

last year the defensive line was learning and trying to establish the Wide 9 assignments which without the proper coverage technique will give up rush lanes and we opened the highway. JFM known more for his run defense, kicking inside should help Quinnen in that resolve. Drafting JJ because of his run defensive prowess will also help. Lawson known for setting the edge and collapsing the pocket. Same with Bryce Huff. Jacob Martin is Jordan Whitehead only in the fact that he is a known run defender, might be light but is that in the box roaming defensive end that will see a lot of snaps at DE in the Wide 9 defensive fronts.

Saleh loves his safeties but deploys them in so many different ways. Could we see Ashtyn Davis take snaps at LB, yes. Can we see Jason Pinnock become the starting FS by week 6, yes. (Jason has been running with the 1s at OTAs). Will Parks special teams ace along with Justin Hardee both are locks to make the 53. They brought in Tony Adams from Illinois same game as Will Parks but with bigger upside, does he make the roster, signs point yes but 53 or psquad that is the question. One of three players that got guaranteed dollars above $100K for the year is sizeable to show how interested they are to have them make the final 53.

DQ Thomas, Tony Adams & Zonovan 'Bam' Knight both feet in the door, they just have to earn it now.

As for the defense @jetgreen13 we know what they ran last year was a precursor to what they want to implement this year after removing the players that did not fit or able to produce last season. DJ Reed played with Saleh in San Fran before landing with Seattle. Whitehead fills the void of a Kam Chancellor role. Adding Marcell Harris another drafted 49er with Kai Nauca that are former Saleh guys. Shows they are bringing in potential, knowledgeable defenders to help glue this defensive unit together.

Sauce will get his starts, he will develop into a true No. 1. But lets not expect him to be the best when there is potential on the roster with him.

I am just reading the tea leaves, folks. If you look at the roster you can assume who is going to produce and where. Jordan Whitehead plays in the box off the line about seven yards traditionally still in the box. He plays in the seam against slot receivers and tight ends but patrols up to the line of scrimmage defending the screen passes and outside runs. He shoots the gaps as a linebacker would helping defending the 'B' gap. This role was once Kam Chancellor's role. One thing Jordan Whitehead brings is championship caliber, is he leader, yes and no. He is still young and still gaining experience but he did play for our former Head Coach and became a vocal leader on the Buccaneers roster, does he need to be a leader here, no. He just needs to be the glue.

As for Quincy Williams like he said he talked to Saleh about his finishing technique where last year he looked to lay the boom rather than tackle wrap up and finish the play. Quincy understands he has missed tackles which hurt the team. Q W also knows he has the range to be that coverage or rush linebacker. He cleans up his technique skies the limit. CJ Mosley like Quincy has holes in his game when it comes to pass coverage as he lost a step against many tight ends last year. Reasons why they offered GTD to DQ Thomas because he is a traditional coverage linebacker in the size of a safety. Nasirildeen should see more role snaps on defense this year. Sherwood should eventually be healthy and contribute. Marcell Harris will be a key at linebacker either outside roles. Questions remain does Del'Shawn Philips see the active roster or practice squad? Kai Nauca and Javin White are both DB/LB can play safety or linebacker.

Safety room is deep, we have potential. They want a leader which this year will be Joyner if he stays healthy. No. 2 behind Joyner is Whitehead reason why I said he is the glue. After those two, Jason Pinnock, Ashtyn Davis, & Will Parks looks like locks. Question about Tony Adams role, but also see Elijah Riley making the practice squad. With our top three corners locked in, could see Michael Carter II taking snaps at safety. Javelin Guidry is in a fight for his role on the active 53 could land on the practice squad which means another team could poach him. Rachad Wildgoose, Isaiah Dunn are both also fighting for a chance at the practice squad. We have talent, but not enough active roster spots available to keep all of them.

So the question begs this who is Active 53, who gets practice squad spots and who gets their papers to free agency?

The Jets are in position to provide quality players for some other rosters for a change . Some of those players are possibly going to provide us with future compensatory picks . We Jets fans are getting there and there is not that far away.
