Dan Quinn's plan if hired as NY Jets HC involved Kyle Shanahan and Kirk Cousins

Kirk Cousins - QB - Redskins
The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta reports if the Jets had hired Dan Quinn as coach, they likely would have acquired Kirk Cousins to be their quarterback.

That's because Quinn would've hired Kyle Shanahan as his OC with the Jets just like he did when he got the job with the Falcons. Per Mehta, Shanahan's plan didn't include Geno Smith, and Shanahan has an "affinity" for Cousins after he was the OC for the Redskins when Cousins was drafted. It's all moot now, but it's an interesting story nonetheless, especially after Smith's broken jaw.

that is dependent on the redskins wanting to trade Cousins which I am not sure they would. RGIII an injury waiting to happen

If we traded for him back in March, before the draft, that would have been plenty of time for them to find a replacement for Cousins. They actually have a replacement for Cousins already on the roster...Colt McCoy who looked great last night.

Also, if Cousins was traded; who knows, likely would have changed their draft strategy right, because they trade Cousins in March...Hundley, Petty, etc could be a Redskin today.

If Quinn thought Cousins was "our franchise QB," a 2nd and 5th likely moves the needle for Skins and gives them ammo to draft a QB in the mid rds and two picks to address team needs. Im sure something like that would have got it done.

But its all hypotheticals, it will just be interesting if Cousins steps in week 1 and sets the world on fire. It will also be interesting to see what Quinn and Kyle do in ATL.

if that was the case, i'am even more ecstatic on the Bowles hire. Done wit these Matt Schaub, Scott Mitchell, Kevin Kolb low ceiling QB's, who come in for mop up duty and light it up.

It's enough we got Matt Flynn.

Robert Griffin III suffers concussion in Redskins preseason game
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, USA TODAY Sports 8:31 a.m. EDT August 21, 2015

USA TODAY Sports' George Schroeder offers the five biggest storylines every fan should be watching as the 2015 college football season approaches.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III suffered a concussion in Thursday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions when he was hit while attempting to recover a fumble, coach Jay Gruden said.

Gruden said he was unsure when Griffin would be able to return to action but would be the team's starter when healthy. The fourth-year signal-caller will have to go through the league's concussion protocol before he is cleared for action.

"We'll have to wait, go through the whole process, see how he recovers, see how fast he recovers," Gruden said in his postgame news conference.

Griffin also left the game with a shoulder stinger, but Gruden said that injury was not an issue.

Lions defensive end Corey Wootton tackled Griffin in the second quarter and appeared to land on the quarterback's shoulder. Griffin remained down on the field for several minutes while medical staff attended to him, though he walked off with trainers and gave fans a thumbs-up signal.

The team ruled Griffin out for the remainder of the game, though it was unlikely he would have played beyond that series.

Asked why Griffin was still playing in the second quarter, Gruden said, "We weren't doing that well on offense. I wanted to try to get something going on offense. A lot of quarterbacks play into the second quarter in a preseason game. Football is a tough sport."

Griffin was under constant pressure Thursday, taking three sacks and several hits through four series. He was 2-of-5 passing for 8 yards and fumbled twice before leaving the game.

"It felt like we were picking Robert up after every pass play. So we've got to fix that," center Kory Lichtensteiger told reporters after the game. "Exactly what led to that, we don't know, but it's something we've got to address, for sure."

Colt McCoy, Griffin's replacement and backup, threw for 80 yards and a touchdown on 5-of-6 passing in the Redskins' 21-17 win.

Griffin has struggled to stay healthy throughout his NFL career and endured a midseason benching by Gruden last season to reclaim his starter status this year. Earlier in the week, he created a stir when he said he believed he was the best quarterback in the league.

The Skins turned to Colt McCoy and not Cousins...enough said. McCoys's career is even less than that of Fitz.

he's not credible, but it's an interesting topic. There will obviously be discussions on both sides on whether they prefer Shanahan and Cousins to Gaily and Fitzpatrick...Quinn and Bowles are a bit of a wash in terms of resume, IMO. Its all for discussion. I didn't see any place in my post that says "this is a credible source."

what's interesting to me is the baiting.... when a response comes, then that guy is portrayed as the bad guy. just shaking my head.... nothing changes.....

not sure it's a straight comparison between cousins and fitz.

fitz is clearly a stop-gap type QB. he was obtainable for a very low price (conditional 7th/6th i think?). cousins wouldn't have been available for that price. so i don't think it's a straight binary choice of gailey/fitz or shannahan/cousins.

that's what we'd be heading into 2016 with...regardless of what we moved to get Fitz or Cousins, based on the OCs selected would have decided the QBs we targetted. For Gaily we targetted Fitz, which cost 'x,' for Quinn he said 'F' Geno Smith, go get me Cousins. But I agree Fitz was a 6th or 7th and Cousins would have been a 2nd or 3rd probably...no arguments on value.

But it is interesting to think Cousins week 1 starter and these WRs. He also went to Mich St so he played in bad conditions.

However, I dont love Cousins arm...I think he's a mild upgrade to Hoyer...and Connor Cook is a mild upgrade to Cousins. None of these 3 have rocket arms...but average to above average (which is strange when you think of these QBs playing in Big 10 weather conditions.

Did you like Cousins as a QB prospect having seen him at Mich St? Maybe you have a different prospective seeing this in-state rival.

I do know this: if Cousins was having a catch with his Dad in his own driveway when he was hurt, there may have been a statue built for him

never was a huge cousins fan - as a collegiate QB or as a pro. so with respect to this discussion, i would be glad that we didn't go with shanahan if it meant we had to pay a big price to get cousins. if "trade for cousins" was the game plan, i'm glad we didn't go that route (this assumes it would have cost at least a 3rd on cousins...for a marginal price of a 6th or 7th it would have been fine)

Cousins would be better than anything we have here but doesnt he also have a weak arm? He's another hold the fort guy.....

Agree with you, Elias. In my opinion, many backups shine in short stints and then are exposed when asked to play regularly. The classic case was Scott Mitchell. Not sure that I even prefer Cousins to Fitz.
