Darnold As A Leader

The more I read and hear, the more obvious it is that our new QB will indeed be our franchise QB. Everyone who has been around him mentions that he has the "It" factor. His coach met him when Sam was 16 and could not believe what an adult he was . Senior players at USC listened to Sam with rapt attention. Sam re-arranged a flight so that he could throw to his receivers who were being scouted. He decides to throw during a torrential rain at his pro day, rather than wait until the weather cleared. He strikes me as one of those men who was born to lead, without having to proclaim that he is a leader. Yes, he has mechanical flaws that can be corrected, but this leadership quality is either there or it isn't. To me, the two most important factors in being an NFL QB are

1. being able to quickly process what you are seeing when you drop back (The lack of this ability is Hack's fatal flaw) and then accurately make the right throw

2. being able to lead the team

For the first time since Joe, I feel confident. I will gladly change my screen name to Darnold14 if Sam can take us all the way, not that he cares about a forum screen name, LOL.

I agree hear but I will add two more traits to this:

1. Being able to throw receivers open and Darnold showed that in college at the least. Don’t see the transition for him being that much difficult into the pros.

2. Being able to make something happen when it isn’t there and he that very well in college also. You don’t have to be a Steve Young, Mike Vick or Randall Cunningham also in this. Something as simple as what Brady or Marino did works and we all know they were pocket passers to the max. Then you have the truly elite but smart running QBs like Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson who run smart. They get out of bounds, slide or throw the ball at the right time to make something happen. Darnold appears to fall in line somewhere either where Rodgers and Wilson is now or in between where a Brady and Marino would be and Rodgers and Wilson is now.

I've liked Darnold for over a year. No matter what he did this past year I just kept saying I wanted Darnold. I really think his turnover issues are mostly fixable. Everyone said what a great leader Mayfield is, but I'm sorry when you get tackled by a fat Arkansas cop thats not a leader. When you grab your junk thats not a leader. A leader is on the field, at practice, off the field and in the community. Darnold is the best QB by far in that regard. Plus he has all the tools. I've never been more confident in any player the Jets have ever drafted or traded for. I have said it before the Jets are the only thing that can ruin Darnold. Otherwise he is going to be an All Pro.

It might be a bad analogy because it's a different sport, but he reminds me of Derek Jeter in terms of his quiet self-assurance.

If there’s one thing we don’t have to worry about, it’s Darnold doing something stupid in his off time. He’s squeaky clean. I can’t say the same for Mayfield. He carries too much risk, IMO. Maybe he’s past it all, but that’s not something Macc could risk.

If it does turn out Darnold Jeter comparison is true just the pain of the VaGiants fans passing on him for Blair Thomas 2.0
