I thought the personal foul call was excessive, a fine might be too much.

LONDON -- Jets linebacker Demario Davis was fined $8,681 by the NFL for finishing a tackle by picking up and slamming Eagles running back Darren Sproles into the ground during last Sunday's game, a 24-17 Jets loss.

The play, which occurred during the second quarter, had drawn a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness.

That $8,861 fine is the minimum prescribed in the NFL's 2015 schedule of fines for a first offense for a late hit.

"They threw a flag, it was a 15-yard penalty," Jets head coach Todd Bowles had said about the play earlier this week. "You can't do it."

Davis' penalty came on the play right after Brandon Marshall's dumb fumble. Davis had snuffed out a screen pass to Sproles for no gain, which would have left the Eagles with second-and-10 from the Jets' 36. Instead, the 15-yard penalty gave the Eagles a first down on the Jets' 21. The found the end zone five plays later to extend their lead to 24-0.

The fine won't put too much of a dent in Davis' wallet. Per overthecap.com, Davis will earn $1.492 million in base pay this season, the final year of his rookie contract.

The Jets arrived here in London on Friday morning for their game against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Except, in NJ out of 1.4, his take home is probably 700k. Hardly enough for booze and hookers.

The penalty and fine are ridiculous, I could be wrong but I didn't see him pick sproles up and slam him. I saw a rolling tackle.

What horseshiit. They tackle was a textbook rugby style tackle which is safer for both players but apparently DD is supposed to only use the exact force to roll him into the ground like a little dove hitting a pile of feathers.

Of course, the TD reversal in the Cinn game was like 10 bazillion times worse. The "process of completing the catch" rule makes no sense whatsoever.

Gotta disagree, it was clearly excessive IMO and was not at all surprised when the penalty or fine was assessed. With regards to textbook rugby tackle, I played for 7 years and have followed a fair amount since, and nowhere have I seen that technique taught as the right way to tackle.

Anyone with an objective eye can see he clearly deserved to be penalized. He was pissed off because the Jets D had NO answer for the wheel route. He took his frustration out on the guy that had already burned the Jets all day long.

Definitely not a "textbook" rugby tackle. Davis' sling tackle is a great way to cause concussions. The game has changed, gents, the tackle was illegal and comes with a fine. Oh well, on to London.

My only question is , is Davis our answer for the long term at ILB? I think we can do better.

CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING

Sproles was eluding and breaking tackles that whole game. He was literally the Eagles MVP on specials and offense. From my observation he had at least a dozen broken tackles to that point, the point of the Davis takedown. On that play Davis had Sproles wrapped up, but Sproles was still fighting to break loose and fighting for extra yardage, he DID NOT give up on the play, and as previously stated, he was routinely breaking tackles in that game, for a split second looking like we had him dead to rights, and the next second he's scooting down the field for another big gainer.

In that context it was the officials responsibility to blow the whistle and blow the play dead if he felt Davis had adequately secured Sproles and the play was over, BUT THE OFFICIAL NEVER DID, no whistle was blown until AFTER the takedown, so from my perspective Davis was making damn sure he got the little SOB down on the ground this time and there would be no more great escapes. Thats why the penalty and fine are not justified in my view. The real culprit, if there is one, are the officials who were late with their whistles.

As for the takedown itself, sure it was violent, but hey, this is football, not tennis. Davis's job is to play to the whistle and get his man on the ground, and thats exactly what he did. If the officials wanted to protect Sproles, blow the damn whistle and end the play, otherwise Davis DID HIS JOB, he put Sproles on the ground and ended the play himself. Just imagine if Davis tried to put him down softly, Sproles broke from his grasp and ripped off another big gainer, everyone in this forum would be calling him soft and questioning whether or not he should even be the starter.

I agree with Ham here. It was a very late whistle. The play is still alive until the whistle sounds.

I think the refs over reacted with the flag, but Davis did rag doll him. Can deal with a borderline flag. The fine was wrong.

NONSENSE. It doesn't matter about who did what. We are not on an elementary school playground. He slammed the guy down because Sproles himself had been owning the Jets all day long. He wasn't pissed and executing a cheap shot on Sproles. He was pissed that he was caught out of position so many times and took his frustration out on a guy he happened to catch.

But it still warrants a flag. By the letter of the rules, it constitutes a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He got what he deserved. You think the officials took too long to blow the whistle?! Hold your breath and see if that ever changes.

I'll stand by my statement here, "I think the refs over reacted with the flag, but Davis did rag doll him. Can deal with a borderline flag. The fine was wrong.

Williams just picked up the Giants rb turned him upside down, and threw him into the ground head first. No penalty.

I will say, one hypocritical aspect of the nfl who makes changes to the game for safety, is that they blow whistles way way way too late. If the play is over, why are sorting on your whistle and increasing the potential for meaningless injuries?
