This is all just my opinion obviously but if you look at QBs and their organizations over the past 30 years or so, as compared to what we have been dealing with you can see a major difference. Not all the all-pro caliber and HOF (elected or soon to be) QBs were born and bread to be that, they were just drafted to the right organizations at the right time. For example:
- Tom Brady and Joe Montana are now known as two of the greatest QBs to ever touch a football. They were drafted to teams that groomed them correctly, build around them the right way and they won 5-plus SBs with their teams. Both are or will be first ballot HOFers and are the Mount Rushmore of QBs so far.
- Russell Wilson and Big Ben were drafted to winning organizations and all they had to do was stay out the way and do their part for the first 2-3 years and the organizations won. After that, both QBs were ready to take over the team and be the true franchise QBs that they could count on. Both will become become first ballot HOFers when they retire.
- Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning were QBs that were drafted to organizations that were terrible at the time. Both QBs showed them that they had the goods, had heart and could lead the team if they build around them correctly. The teams did and they became SB winners and first ballot HOFers.
- Brett Farve and Aaron Rodgers both played for a Green Bay team that were struggling at the time but the caliber of QBs that they are/were, they dragged the teams along to some success. The teams build around them correctly and they won SBs and both QBs are or will be first ballot HOFers.
- Dan Marino and Jim Kelly both went to teams that were good at the time but these QBs took them to a whole nothing level. No the teams didn't win any SBs but these QBs lead both teams to success for many years and both QBs are first ballot HOFers.
- Cam Newton, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and Deshawn Watson are all QBs that appear to be damn near Supermen. Whether drafted by the right organization or not, we all can see that they have the goods. Now Watson is struggling a little bit without his top WR but he will figure it out and the Texans will be ok with him. All QBs IMO are destined for first ballot HOF.
- I say or post all of this to bring up our situation. When was the last time you can think of, after Joe Namath retired that the Jets have drafted a QB that no matter what the situation was, he was still going to make something happen and we could still win with this guy?
NEVER!!!
- Ok, so when was the last time, since Joe Namath retired that you can think that the Jets have drafted a QB that they build the team around him correctly and he helped us win and he became a franchise winning QB?
NO ONE, I SORTA KINDA WANT TO SAY KEN OBRIEN BUT THEN AGAIN, HE WAS NOT A TRUE FRANCHISE QB. HE WAS DECENT AT BEST.
- Ok, so now can you name a QB or QBs that the Jets have drafted, after Namath retired that the team was ready to win from game one and all he had to do was not mess it up, do his part and they would win and he also grow into our franchise winning QB?
Mark Sanchez, was drafted into a great situation with Rex Ryan and that team was ready to win from year one. Problem is Mark couldn't really just do his part and stay out the freaking way and let the team lead him to a SB victory or two. Sanchez also wasn't ready to take over and lead them after they ruined everything and tore the team apart in his third year. Sanchez was overwhelmed and couldn't handle the franchise QB duties and he washed out.
Now here we are with Darnold, drafted to a horrible team under horrible conditions but he can't seem to make it happen like a Cam Newton or Peyton Manning did with their teams. He will most likely be gone next year and we will be starting all over again with whomever. This Jets team has to change its thinking and the way they do things or we keep running on the hamster wheel with every QB they draft. Unless they luck up and draft a Superman like P. Manning or Cam Newton who regardless of the situation, we will be contender and he will be our franchise QB!
