Dont'a Hightower: Pats and Jets

By that logic, why would Hightower even visit here?

You are the one that said he was visiting the Jets to drive up the price with NE. And that is probably true. If winning is important then he shouldn't pick the Jets. If money is important then he should. Simple.

Jets will have to over pay him. I think he is just doing this to force Pats to up the price. I dont think he has any intentions of being a Jet. Pats comes up close to other top 3-5 LBers pay & he will stay with Pats. Players like winning & will take a little pay cut to win Super Bowls. Brady isnt close to being paid as the number 1 QB in NFL and he is fine taking less money/cheating/winning SB's!

But if every guy chooses winning over money, then he has to know the Pats don't believe he'd sign with the Jets. Right?

He can't think the Pats are that stupid.

You may be right. He might be driving the Pats offer up. It's a smart business move. But if the Pats are offering 10 million and the Jets are offering 12 million (as Jason Cole has just confirmed in BleacherReport), then we'll soon find out what Hightower's priorities are.

If the Pats actually do blink and pay him more based on the visit, then it was worth it to both Hightower and the Jets. But if the general premise on this board right now is true, and players prioritize winning over money, then the Patriots won't budge. They'll know he's bluffing in talking to the Jets.

When the Jets were in consecutive AFC title games, why didn't the team get free agents for cheap? It seems like a bit of having your cake and eating it, too. When the Jets are good, all players want is money. When the Jets are bad, all players want is to win.

I'm still a little down on the safety situation. Not sold on Pryor/Gilchrist moving forward. And yes, we need a CB badly. There's some interest in 31 year old Carr from Dallas. Offensively, I'm good with the o-line and RB's. Not sure Decker and Enunwa is enough at WR. I'm not as optimistic about Robby Anderson as others here. I'd like to see ASJ utilized more in this offense.

I rather go after Mo Claiborne than Carr... I am intrigues with what ASJ can do with an offense that might actually game plan with the TE in mind... I think Anderson is the perfect #3 Guy... I am hoping Enunwa can keep making the leaps and bounds improvements he has been since coming to this team. His skill set is definitely comparable to a #1 Guy, But with Enunwa and Anderson on the outside. Decker in the middle and the actual use of TE. The Wr corp is not a concern. Especially with a guy like Peake and his talent along with whatever Smith's upside might be.

Morton comes from an offense that utilizes the TE, unlike what we did under Gailey. I expect ASJ to get looks, and I expect another decent TE to be brought in. OJ Howard is a possibility at #6. Wouldn't shock me.

Good... Don't overpay or feel like you need to get into a bidding war with yourself.

I'm a little surprised if he took less money, because of how notoriously horrible the Patriots treat their players. I'm very surprised people are willing to deal with horrible employers for less money, all for the chance to win.

I'm not surprised he went back to the Patriots at all. I expected it. My guess is the if the Jets were closer to being a playoff team, they had a realistic chance. But they are still too far away. Also, the coaching situation may be tenuous which could unsettle a lot of free agents. If there was some assurance from the owner that the coaching staff will remain in tact for a few years, that would help as well. Stability in an organization matters. No organization in football is more stable than the Patriots, as much as it pains me to say that.

He would have been wasted on the Jets. They are so many players away from being competitive so I think its for the best. No matter if they signed Hightower or not they have to hit the next 3 drafts out of the park regardless.

Hightower is hitting his prime, and the Jets are still a few years away.

I agree, though, that this notion that the team will have to hit homers in the next three drafts might be a bit over-the-top. The team needs some young talent for its rebuild, but that standard might be a bit unrealistic. If, however, the Jets (or any team) hit it out of the park in three straight drafts, we'd be looking at the next dynasty. No team drafts that well.

If you look at every draft for every team over the years, rarely do you find anyone finding diamonds across the board. Most draft picks don't pan out, or they become marginal players.

This is not something specific to the Jets.

Going back to NE says a little something about Hightower; he wants to win over earning some extra money. I do agree with someone's comments above that if the Jets were competitive it might have been different but they could be the worst team in the league based on no QB and so many holes to fill. 2017 will be a rough year and I'm good with that.

I wouldn't worry too much about going after Hightower.

Now, if he was offering huge money for big-name guys who are, say, 32 years old, then it's obvious there is no vision.
