Jets have some interest in Evan Mathis (on due-diligence level), but signing him considered unlikely. Waiting for young Gs to pan out. #nyj

Ideally we sign Mathis and one of the young guns steps up at OG too, then we can flip James Carpenter to RT

If that happens, now you really got something ...

Mathis is 34, expensive and done

Aboushy started effectively at LG last season,.should improve as a second year player and is inexpensive

Don't see the need to kick him out the door for an expensive and probably broken trinket

Interesting read on Bleacher Report rated the top 70 guards in the NFL. They had the following rankings:

2. Evan Mathis
46. Oday Aboushi
52. Willie Colon
66. Austin Howard
69. Brian Winters

One of these things is not like the others.

Evan Mathis is perhaps at the peak of his prime, even though he is 33 and turns 34 on November 1.
2013, 2014 Pro Bowl
2013 1st team All-Pro
2011, 2012, 2013 PFF All-Pro
#88 of the 2014 Top 100.

He is a legacy NFL lineman, being the nephew of 5X Pro Bowler & '83 All-Pro MIA NT/DT Bob Glenn Baumhower.

Mathis and the flEagles have been at odds over re-negotiating his 2012 contract for 5 years/$25.5M.
Mathis was scheduled to make $5.5M in 2015 and $6M in 2016, (+ an additional $1M/year pro-rata signing bonus hit on PHI's cap number for '15 & '16) - but he wanted a raise, based on his spectacular play the past 2-3 seasons.

PHI allowed him and his agent to check the market for a possible suitor in each of the past 2 off-seasons but Mathis got no takers.
It's possible no team wanted to give PHI anything to take him away but more likely his pay for a LG is already at the top end of that which even All-Pro LGs are making.
(Only Mankins and LeVitre are making the extra $1M more this season.)
29 year old Packers OG, Josh Sitton, made the 2nd team All-Pro list for the past 2 years, Pro Bowl in 2012 & 2014, & was graded as the 2nd best RG in 2013 and 2nd best LG in 2014.
Josh is making about $400,000 less than Mathis was scheduled to collect in 2015, but has other bonus money that evens the two up at a $7M cap hit.

Given that Mathis no longer has any leverage and has to take what the market will bear, he MAY be amenable to a contract similar to what PHI was contracted to pay him, in the $5.5M range.
That is a number the Jets could EASILY fit into their cap plans and still have room to fix up Mo at some point this season.
Mathis would be an ideal fit along the Jets OL at either OG position but especially at LG, where he would increase the effectiveness of both THOR and 'Brick.

So what's standing in the way of getting this done?
Look no further than the Jets "official" position that the QB job is GeNOT's to lose.
While the Jets are a better bet to make the big dance in the AFC than PHI is in the stronger NFC, no team with a schittyA$$ QB is going to be a welcomed opportunity for an aging OL player without his own SB ring.

On a personal note, HYATT™ thinks Chip Kelly is a dumbA$$.
An additional $250k roster bonus and another $250k workout bonus - neither of which he was getting in PHI - for each of the remaining 2 years of his contract, PROBABLY would have made him happy.
For a lousy $1M over 2 years he lost one of the top LGs in football.

@RichCimini how realistic is it that the Jets actually make a move and go after Mathis? #Jetsmail
12:11 PM - 12 Jun 2015

@RichCimini: As I noted Friday on Twitter, I think the Jets have some level of interest in Evan Mathis, who was officially released Friday afternoon by the Philadelphia Eagles, but I'd describe it as a lower level. In other words, I don't think he's signing with the Jets. He'll probably cost too much (he didn't want to play for $5.5 million in Philly) and the Jets have only $4.9 million in cap space. They want to give their young guards a chance to prove themselves in training camp -- guys like Brian Winters, Brent Qvale and Oday Aboushi. And let's not forget about Willie Colon, the incumbent. Mathis is 33 years old, reportedly the oldest projected starting offensive linemen in the league. Personally, I'd sign him, but it's not my money.

If there is any negative side to a Mathis signing, it's that he is a finesse ZBS pass protection guard, (lawdy knows the Jets certainly need passer protection up the wazoo if GeNOT is going to be the starter), not the steamrolling type run blocker, which is a large part of the Jets game plan because GeNOT is such a crappy passing QB & the roster doesn't have an AP, Gore, Foster, Bell, Lacy, Lynch, Charles, or Murray at RB.
Ivory was the 28th ranked RB & Johnson the 39th ranked, in 2014.
That's not all that good.

Any more news on Mathis?

Saw a report that about six teams have contacted his agent. There's big interest, and understandably so. He's consistently graded out as a top guard in the league, and has played at a high level the last two seasons despite being 33.

According to John Clayton, there are 4 main teams looking at Mathis:

San Fran
Indy
Miami
KC

Truth of the matter is, regardless of the crap that is on ESPN, is that Mathis hasn't signed yet because he and his agent have discovered the cold, hard truth the Eagles have been trying to tell them...there isn't a market for a 7 mill a year OG. The only reason he hasn't signed yet isn't because teams don't need him, it's because no one wants him at his price.

What that also means is as of this second, there are no front runners for Mathis, regardless of what ESPN makes up to keep the story going. No one knows what price Mathis and his agent will settle for except them, and they haven't come down enough to even get him in an NFL teams building...so he's sitting in the street.

Mathis and drew are about to discover asking the Eagles for a release was a huge mistake and cost Mathis millions. Someone will eventually come up to 3-4 mill...maybe...and Mathis and his agent will need to either swallow the cold hard truth or decide to retire.

At this point, his best bet to get paid might be to wait until August and see if anyone loses a starting guard to injury.

His best bet was stay put for $5.5 mill this year...greedy bastard. :)

Yup, but its a little late for that now.

Although if it is true that he had a contract offer from the team that was pulled off the table by Chip when he assumed GM duties, I can understand him wanting out. Problem for him is that he is now a free agent after the big $ has been spent and other teams have filled holes in the draft. The time to get out would have been March, not June.
