Fashanu and the extension question

I like the potential of this OL. Tippmann and Membou are absolute keepers, and Parham has been a very good value FA signing. I think we all would like to see C solidified a bit more than what we are getting now.

But the elephant in the room seems to be Fashanu. After this season, it will be time to make a decision on a fifth-year option. And shortly thereafter, an extension. He is still young, and I see him as a potential D'Brick, solid for a long time, though never spectacular. He has been somewhat inconsistent of late. Should the team extend him? Is the jury still out? How much progress should we see before we make that decision?

His play has seemed to decline from year 1 to year 2 and year 2 to year 3. He hasn't faced any notable opposition this season . Van Ness week 2 and Hutchinson yesterday lined up opposite Membu. Already given up 4 sacks and 10 pressures. He would have to improve significantly over the remainder of the season to earn the option. Is he currently worth $22.37 million for 1 season. Should he be as a top 8-9 Left tackle? Brick was better and his durability was legendary.
Meyers is terrible, Tippman is struggling, as is Membu.
The value signing Parham was by far the best player on the O line until he went out with the knee. This o line is not living up to the hype. It's disappointing to say the least.

Definitely in the Lions game. I don't think he was as bad against the Packers as he was against the Lions, but he was more than suspect in that game. I wouldn't want to jump to conclusions on just that game, but he needs to step up to earn the money. He's not off to a great start.

That raises another question - if the Jets let him walk, do you move Membou over to LT or do you bring in a new LT?

A dilemma you raise, old pal. JD and Saleh opened the door for a SB QB to leave, bc of being able to drift Zach.
I say sign him for the least amount you can. replace him with our draft capital, dangle him as trade bait when we need to.
Essentially, trat him like a first round QB salary situation.

issue is these OL problems go to last year and they need to pinpoint the weak spot(s) in handling the protection scheme vs boitzes/stunts. I'm not an OL, but I thought that falls largely on the Center.....and I tend to view an OL as dominoes - they are affected good/abd by their neighbor. LT seems to be a problem right now regardless of the other guys....but I still fall on Center as the weakest link and keeping them in the best protection mode......and/or just physically stinks and nobody likes a swinging gate lol.

Last thing a QB wants to see is the front of his linemen jerseys.

With what young LTs can get on the market, it's not the worst idea. And if he develops into a steady force on the blindside, all the better.

Truth is, elite LTs can take a LOT of cap space. If you can find someone some is good but not elite (think the D'Brock mold) who can be a steady force on the edge for years, it allows you to not have to use massive cap space or draft capital for years. That is what I hope Fashanu can become.

As a former OL and a line coach, a lot of it falls on the C. The problem for the Jets is that their C is perhaps their worst starter. He's not awful, but he is a below average starter. It would have been much easier if Tippmann had been better at C than at RG.

With scheme reads and assignments, you need stability, and you need your C to be one of your better OL. The two most important spots on the line are LT and C. As I mentioned before, at LT, you want a guy who is good to very good, who stays healthy, but an elite LT can take assets from the rest of your team. You want a top 5-10 LT, not necessarily the best LT in the game. You similarly want a top 5-10 C. The Jets definitely don't have that.

The two strongest positions on the OL for the Jets are RT and RG. That is not ideal, but you can't turn down having two outstanding young players on your line, regardless of position.

Wondering if/when Parnham and Coop get back, we can get Tipp back to C? Maybe just having 3 physically dominant IOL will solidify things for a while. At the very least, FR can get all 5 moving North and South in unison keeping Breece untouched for a yard or two?.
