the market for fitzpatrick will be set when he eventually/inevitably re-signs.....

LOLz at least we have something to talk about until training camp..

Unless there is a major injury nobody wants Fitz. Everyone knows what he is and without Chan and NBA sized WR's he wouldn't have been able to put up those numbers. I just don't want the Jets to overspend for him. I do think he gives us the best chance to win for one year. He is just not worth a long term or high dollar commitment.

what it comes down to IMO is this.. is the guy a late bloomer (played well his last year in houston, obviously without marshall, decker or gailey) or is he fool's gold??

because 33 ain't that old for a QB.. especially for one who relies on savvy & guile..

He did have really good weapons in Houston though. Do you give a 3 year contract to a guy who has never had 3 great seasons??

He hasn't taken $12 million, nor should he. $6 million for the season he just gave is an absolute insult to him.

Sorry, Sack. I usually find you quite reasonable and agree with much that you have to say, but I find this position puzzling. The Jets are literally bidding against themselves, not a single other team in the league has offered him more than $5M - and you think the Jets should offer Fitz even more now than they have, which is already more than double what he could get anywhere else? That would be an absurd way to conduct business. Either Fitzpatrick wants to play football and he'll accept what the Jets are offering, or he'll sit. That's the way I think it should be. And calling a $12M salary for 2016 "an insult" makes you sound like one of the Jets' beat reporters - which is not a compliment! :)

The market says different. Just because Fitz thinks he is worth more doesn't make it true.

well the market price for a starting QB is a lot more than $6 million. even if we consider fitz a mid-tier QB, the 20th highest paid QB in 2016 will make $12.5 million.

http://overthecap.com/position/quarterback/2016/

and a bunch of the guys listed below that are on rookie contracts, so you can't really compare them since it is a slotted salary based on draft position.

now i understand the flip side that says the market for fitzpatrick is limited, with basically no starting QB spots left. i'm not saying we should overpay him. i think a 3 year deal worth around $36 mil, with only the 1st year guaranteed (perhaps with a march 2017 roster bonus owed, which forces the issue for next year) is a reasonable solution. give him $12 million or so this year, perhaps with playoff incentives, but don't only offer him $6 million for 2017 and 2018. at the same time, protect the team from a long-term cap consequence if he falters this year or one of the young guys overtakes him

$12 million for 2016 is not an insult, but cutting it in half to $6 million is. That is what I was trying to convey. My apologies for it being unclear.

He has very few other options on the market. He can retire, or take less money to be a backup.

The problem is, the Jets also have very few other options. Geno? Petty and Hack are not ready yet.

I think the Jets understand that if they can't sign Fitz then they can go with Geno even if it's not a great option. They also are getting an opportunity to look at all 3 QB's with Fitz not signed. They also know they have virtually no chance of winning anything meaningful with Fitz as starter. They know they are competitive with Fitz but that's about it. They want him back but if he won't come down in price then they are ready to move on.

They won 10 games last year. You may not like the numbers, and the numbers may not support your narrative, but that doesn't mean the numbers don't exist.

The Jets have a better chance at winning something meaningful in 2016 with Fitz than they do with Geno, Petty, or Hack. The question has to be, is that important to you? With or without him, they are not a Super Bowl team. So do you increase your odds at competing for a playoff spot with Fitz, or do you take your lumps with Hack or Petty and let them get experience, and get past the growing pains?

I, as a fan want Fitz back for one year and maybe two. After that unless he wins a SB or has a deep run then I want to see if we have a future QB. If they feel he is not worth the money and want to move on today then I'm fine with that as well. If we were the defending SB champs I would want him back. I don't really care at this point.

so long as a 3 year deal is jet friendly why not??

i would think the guaranteed money is more of an issue..

Not many players including Fitz are giving a team friendly deal. Fitz really should because he has very little value to the rest of the league.

Well, I agree with you about that. I want him back, but as a short-term fix. And I am hoping Hack or Petty develops - preferably Hack, because I think he has a higher ceiling.

i think we all do, including the jets..

I've never seen a starting QB with zero options in FA with the numbers he had. It's kind of sad for him and even more for the Jets that this is our only option.

i think you're down playing how effective fitzpatrick is in gailey's system..

if fitzpatrick can maintain/build on 31-15, (i believe he can) why the hell should we care what the rest of the league thinks of him??

I guess that's the question. Can he?? Like can he win a meaningful game??
