3 things to watch for as the Jets face the Cowboys
The hunt for the playoffs continues for Gang Green.

A win on Saturday night at the Dallas Cowboys would give the New York Jets their first winning season since 2010. It also would greatly enhance their chances of making the playoffs, which coincidentally they haven't made since, yep, 2010.

And all this with a first-year head coach and a castoff starting quarterback. Not too shabby.

The Cowboys are 4-9, a pretty bad team that seems destined to miss the playoffs for what would be the fourth time in five years. Offensively, they are pretty bad and defensively, they are average at best.

All of which means the Jets should be able to win this game and get win No. 9.

Three Things to Know About the Jets in Week 15:

It is Still All About Fitzmagic

The reigning AFC Offensive Player of the Week has been tremendous over the past three weeks, all Jets wins. He has managed the offense but also made big plays for his team. He will be without rookie wide receiver Devin Smith, now out for the year, who was beginning to emerge as a target over the middle. But Fitzpatrick continues to impress and he's limiting mistakes: No interceptions in three games is the ticket to Jets success in this game and beyond.

Cowboys Secondary is Primary

The one strength of this Cowboys team is their secondary and a pass defense that is rather good. They are fourth in the league against the pass and third in touchdowns allowed with 14. But they are susceptible against short to intermediate routes, which is the Jets bread and butter. If the Jets put up points on this Cowboys team, it likely won't be the big play variety but slow, methodical movement down the field. The run defense is rather ordinary, something that the league's fifth leading rusher, Chris Ivory, will surely be looking to exploit.

Marcus and Miles

The Jets secondary will get a big boost this week with Marcus Williams likely return, a player who has arguably been the best cornerback on the team not named Darrelle Revis. And in recent weeks, safety Rontez Miles has transitioned seamlessly from practice squad to the two-deep. Two weeks ago in a win over the New York Giants, he had six tackles and an interception, taking home a game ball. The emergence of these two young players could be huge for the Jets during the stretch win. Williams plays press coverage very well and Miles is a big thumper in run support. More depth this time of year isn't a bad thing for any team.

[h=3]Two Teams in Similar Playoff Challenges, Darrelle vs. Dez, Fitz's & Brandon's Shared Quest[/h]

AP_11091201931-article.jpg

It's Saturday Night Football Fever in Big D, and even though the Jets (8-5) and the Cowboys (4-9) appear to be on different tracks, they're actually in similar boats. Both are in playoff hunts and not in control of their destinies.

As it stands this week, the Jets need to finish with one more win than Kansas City or Pittsburgh to squeeze into the AFC playoff grid. If all three were to win out and don't win division titles, the Chiefs would be in and the Green & White would be bumped by the Steelers' better common-opponents record.

[TWEET]677541302347685889[/TWEET]

Dallas, meanwhile, is fighting not for an NFC Wild Card but rather for the division title in the underwater NFC East. They're two games behind everyone else and so conceivably could join the 2014 Panthers and the 2010 Seahawks as the only 16-game sub-.500 playoff teams.
"I think our team is battling and fighting and scratching and clawing and playing with the right kind of relentless spirit," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said, "but we haven't done the things necessary to win a lot of these games."
Which of course makes them dangerous in their own building and reinforces the Jets' tried and true approach to this primetime meeting.
"We know we have to win out and we’re trying to win," Bowles said today. "As long as we win and take care of ourselves, what happens on Sunday happens on Sunday. But we have to play Dallas on Saturday and that’s all we’re concerned about."
Here are seven more points about the Jets' first visit ever to AT&T Stadium to play the Cowboys:

1. Infrequent Rivals
The Jets trail Dallas all-time, 7-3, but they've split the last six since 1990 and won the most recent meeting, an inspiring Sunday night 27-24 comeback on Sept. 11, 2011, at two-year-old, newly renamed MetLife Stadium.

[TWEET]677541932336324608[/TWEET]

Now they make their first trip ever to Jerry Jones' pleasure dome in Arlington, TX. Certainly AT&T can be an intimidating venue, except for one thing ...

2. No Home Cooking?
The Cowboys aren't winning there this year. They beat the Giants by a point on opening night on a Tony Romo-to-Jason Witten TD with 7 seconds to play. Since then, it's been five losses, large (New England, 30-6, and Carolina, 33-14) and small (Seattle, 13-12, and Philadelphia, 33-27 in OT). The injuries to Romo (collarbone) and WR Dez Bryant (foot) have something to do with it, but the 'Pokes at home have a minus-9 turnover margin and one takeaway, both the worst marks in the NFL.

3. Saddling Up
DC Kacy Rodgers says watching video of the Dallas offense, "We see a team that's really making a great emphasis to get their running game started." In theory, they should. The pass game is struggling, the run game is 11th in the NFL in yards/game, ninth in yards/carry, and Darren McFadden and Robert Turbin led a 171-yard attack at Green Bay last week. But the Jets run defense, with Damon Harrison and David Harris leading the charge, is first in yards/game and third in yards/carry. If the Jets win this battle then their pass rush gets to ...

4. Storm the Cassel
The Green & White have run into Matt Cassel only twice, both times in 2008 when he was a tough out while filling in for the injured Tom Brady (winning in the Meadowlands, losing in OT at New England). Now, not as much. Playing for Tony Romo, he's 1-5 as a starter and his TD drive rate of 12.0% is third-worst among qualifying QBs. And he'll be under the gun from Mo Wilkerson and a Jets rush that has turned it on with 22 sacks since Jacksonville, the Jets' most in a six-game span in the last seven seasons.

[TWEET]676536868184326146[/TWEET]

5. Darrelle vs. Dez
When Cassel does throw, the matchup of Darrelle Revis on Bryant could be the game's highlight matchup. Revis, back from his concussion, played "really well," said Rodgers, vs. Tennessee. The numbers say Bryant (8 games, 27 catches, 351 yards, 13.0 yards/catch, 2 TDs) is still bothered by his surgical foot. S Calvin Pryor said this week, "I don't think he has the same speed" as before the injury, but Bowles was unconvinced: 'Dez being slow is like LeBron being slow. ... We expect the best Dez Bryant we're going to see."

[TWEET]677550130841653248[/TWEET]

6. Homecoming of Sorts
Neither Bowles nor OC Chan Gailey ever called AT&T their home office, but both were employed by Jones' Cowboys, Gailey as head coach in 1998-99 and Bowles as secondary coach from 2005-07. Both spoke well of their former boss. Gailey, fired after going 18-14 with two playoff berths, said, "Those horror stories that you heard, those are not true. He treated us very well. ... I don't have any animosity. Zero." But as far as game-planning a victory and continuing Jones' anxiety this season, that's another story.

7. Fitz and Brandon
We could go through the accomplishments of the Jets' QB and one of his favorite WR targets again. We'll just mention that if Ryan Fitzpatrick finds Brandon Marshall with five passes, Marshall will break the Jets' season receptions record of 93 set by Al Toon in 1988. And forget about 11 catches. But most important is that before this season the two combined to play 19 seasons for eight teams and so far have not played in one playoff game. "They work hard anyway and they work towards those things," Bowles said, "so hopefully we can get that done." One more win will possibly get them closer to that goal.

Jets @ Cowboys: Taking A Look At The Enemy

Jets @ Cowboys: Taking A Look At The Enemy

What can you expect to see in the Cowboys game against the Jets?

In a way it's a good thing the Cowboys don't have to stress over winning football games in order to get into the playoffs, because what lies on the docket next is going to be a rough one. The New York Jets are a coming to town and they are bringing with them some good football. It's been a little bit of a roller coaster for the Jets this season. They started off smoking, winning four of their first five games to start the season 4-1. Then, they turned around and lost four of their next five to even themselves out at 5-5. But now, they are back to riding hot as they've won three straight games and find themselves right in the middle of a playoff battle.

The Jets are one of the more balanced teams in the league. They can beat you on both sides of the ball. It might not surprise too many people that the Jets have a top 10 defense - ranking 10th in points allowed (19.7) and 5th in yards allowed (323.8). But they also have a top 10 offense as well - ranking 10th in points scored (25.0) and 9th in yards gained (371.2).

Balance is the name of the game for the Jets and even when you break down what they're doing on offense, you'll find that it's a little bit of everything. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the number two quarterback behind Geno Smith, until a scuffle with a teammate in August landed Smith with a broken jaw. Since then, it's been Fitzpatrick's job to lose and he hasn't lost it. He's been solid for the Jets all season, but is really playing well as of late. In the last three games, Fitzpatrick is averaging 310 yards, 3 TDs, and 0 interceptions. It must be nice to have a backup quarterback who not only comes in and plays solid, but also plays well enough to never relinquish the starting job.

But the success Fitzpatrick has had isn't because he's a great quarterback. It helps immensely that he has some quality pass catching options to rely on. Eric Decker was a great free agent signing in 2014, but adding Brandon Marshall this season makes them even stronger. This duo has combined for 155 catches, over 2,000 yards receiving, and 20 touchdowns. Fitzpatrick's most reliable target is Marshall who is in the top five in receptions (89) and yards (1,187). The Jets can beat you in through the air.

As strong as they are in the passing game, their bread and butter starts with running the ball. Chris Ivory is having a great season as the lead back and is in the top five in rushing yards (914) and carries (217). He is a physical runner. For a Dallas defense that got ran over by the Packers last week, giving up 230 yards on the ground - Ivory poses a tough challenge.

It's going to be fun to watch the Jets offense go against the Cowboys defense, with each of them taking turns winning the battles. What's not going to be fun to watch is when the Cowboys have the ball. That is where the trouble starts. The Cowboys offense struggles in general, but they will reach a whole new level of ineptness when they face a tough Jets defense. With Matt Cassel unable to stretch the field, the Cowboys will rely on establishing the run game. This is bad news for Dallas because the Jets have the top run defense in the league, allowing only 78.9 yards a game. Once the Cowboys get to third and long, it will be Cassel time and that is when things will go from bad to worse.

The Jets are coming off a game where they sacked Marcus Mariota five times. Cassel is slightly less elusive than Mariotta. He's going to be in trouble. The Jets top pass rusher, Muhammad Wilkerson, is having a career season. He is in a contract year and is driving up his 2016 price with a strong performance with 53 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 12 sacks. He had three of the five sacks on Mariotta last week.

Cassel will be trying to get the ball in the hands of his biggest playmaking receiver, Dez Bryant. That's a reason to get excited, right? Sure, if you pay no attention to the fact that Bryant is struggling this season and that he'll be on Revis Island this week. I won't ask you to think back to the last time these two faced each other because that would just dredge up more bad memories.

Disagree

We won 4 games last season

Mac and Bowles and Fitz Marshall Decker and our DL looking ahead to 2016 with confidence

No shame in a 150% improvement

Also the Patriot fagboy will be 39+ in August

Lots to be positive about IMO

I think what she is saying is that 10-6 generally guarantees a play off spot, can't remember an 11-5 team that didn't go to the post season. That could happen. Teams often get in at 9-7, not that the team hasn't improved.

At 10-6, 11-5 it will be very frustrating to players and fans if they go home. The team is better, it would still suck to go 10-6 and be watching 8-8 teams or worst win divisions.

Will Cowboys soon turn to Kellen Moore as their quarterback?

Will Cowboys soon turn to Kellen Moore as their quarterback?

IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Kellen Moore took some first-team reps for the first time this week, causing speculation that the former Boise State standout could make his NFL debut at some point Saturday night against the New York Jets.

With hopes of reaching the playoffs virtually gone, the Cowboys (4-9) remain in search of a viable backup to starter Tony Romo, who will enter next season as a 36-year-old veteran who has broken his left collarbone three times in his career.

After ill-fated performances this season by backups Brandon Weeden, who was waived last month, and Matt Cassel, who is 1-5 as the starter this season, the Cowboys have yet to see what Moore can do in a regular-season game. Cassel will start against the Jets, but team owner Jerry Jones suggested that Moore could see action as well.

“More than likely, your game will dictate how they play, and if there is any playing time there for Kellen,” Jones said Friday on local KRLD-FM radio in Dallas. “Obviously that’s Jason (Garrett’s) call, decision and read. ... The game will dictate how he is used.”

The Cowboys, who saw Romo play in just two full games this season, have not used four quarterbacks in a season since 2001.

Cassel, 33, has had success at times during his 11-year career, most notably with the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs. But he has thrown just five touchdown passes and six interceptions this season. And his 44% completion percentage in Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers was his worst of the season.

Still, Garrett maintained that Cassel is the quarterback who gives the Cowboys the best chance to beat the Jets at AT&T Stadium this weekend. And with Dallas still mathematically alive in the postseason picture, though barely, winning Saturday night is more of a priority than seeing what Moore might offer.

Moore, 26, was elevated from the practice squad after Romo broke his left collarbone for the second time this season in the Thanksgiving loss to the Carolina Panthers. Moore spent three years on the Detroit Lions' roster but has never appeared in a regular-season game.

“Everyone loves to play,” Moore said. “At the end of the day, everyone has roles. You do your best with that particular role, and that’s how it works.”

Moore, who is 6 feet and 200 pounds, was 50-3 at Boise State. He does have experience in the system of Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who coached Moore for two years in Detroit.

Jones said Moore’s greatest strengths are his knowledge of the offense and “how well he gets the ball out with that knowledge to the right areas of the field.”

“There’s no bigger believer in Kellen Moore than myself,” Linehan said. “There’s probably a few guys back in Boise and some guys back in Detroit that already know that. But I believe in him.”

Just noticed it is an NFL network game. I hate this. I am not signing of for that BS. I have the gamepass $99.00 deal but I believe that only allows me to watch after the conclusion of the game? What is regional coverage mean 20- 50 mile radius from Manhattan? I am upstate so looks like I will skip and watch tomorrow F*&k Y*u NFL.
Streaming, such as FRS, is a disaster and has already killed one computer with the download viruses so I will not do that.

Looking forward to my nice comfy lounge seat on the sofa for this one.

Hopefully the game makes Jerry sick and causes his Cowboy buddy Fat Chris Christie to vomit up all 18 pounds of his pregame nachos, burritos and margaritas

After this one we need ALL Jet STHs, even SAR to be there early, loud and pumped up to enjoy the inglorious end to Tammy Girl's career of cheating.
