tomorrow's papers: "Petty steps in and saves Jets Preseason" :)

1s still have a lot of work to do...

Disappointed we are not seeing more Stacy...
Is he dealing with some lingering injury or is he that far down on the depth chart? I would of thought he'd be fighting for the #2 spot at least. If not battling for the #1 spot being he's only 24 and ran for 998 yards two years ago.

Sounds like Petty is impressive out there and handling his business. Any chance he takes the starting job and starts like WEEK 1? Kidding actually I'm not!

I agree.

Reilly was fighting for a roster spot with IK. We know how that turned out.

Reilly's not spectacular, but he's a good football player
He still needs to put on more weight

I was at the game tonight, my initial impression is that Fitz was moving really slow through his progressions. Felt like the offense started clicking in the 2nd quarter.
Defense was very vanilla except for Williams. Obviously had the sack/safety, but he was impressive and very active.

On Petty starting week 1 : Maybe but probably not. He looks like he may be the real deal but I hate to see the team ruin him. But you know what, if he totally steps up next week then the JETs are fools to not look forward. So far, he looks like a very good prospect.

He's looking good, with the 2's. It seems like he's really using these scrimmages to their fullest.

Starting him would be a mistake of manzieliing proportions.

I think he might turn out to be a really good project. He certainly has the physical tools, now mentor him for a year maybe 2, and we might have something.

The first team for the Jets stunk tonight, just like last week. Thats the bad news, the good news is, last week EVERY UNIT stunk, but this week all of the other units played extremely well.
Kerley was terrible returning kicks. No burst of speed, and didn't seem to know where he was going.

Marshall had some nice catches early, and Bilal Powell had some nice little runs. Ivory shocked me when he banged it out right for that td,I thought for sure he was getting tackled.

Offense looked better in the second quarter. Seemed like the guys had more pep in their steps. Started to look like the regular season.

You have to remember, they're testing how guys react in certain plays and judging for cuts. You can't judge a team now as if it's a regular game.

Jets hit trifecta of terrible in alarming, deceiving win

Panic City may be on the move from Queens to Florham Park.
The Jets starters looked awful Friday night against the Falcons in the team’s second preseason game of the season. Ryan Fitzpatrick and the starting offense failed to score against Atlanta’s starters and the defense got chewed up by the Falcons on one drive and ended up allowing 14 points. Special teams made it a trifecta of terrible by allowing a 59-yard punt return to Devin Hester.
The final score was deceiving with the Jets winning 30-22 thanks to a strong effort by the backups.
It is only preseason so you can’t overreact, but the Jets have not looked good in their first two preseason games. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson mockingly referred to the “Panic City” around the Mets earlier this year. The Mets stabilized things, but panic now may be setting in around their Shea Stadium cousins.
It was not all bad for the Jets. First-round pick Leonard Williams had a terrific game. He recorded 1 1/2 sacks, one for a safety, and blew up a Falcons running play. The Jets will be counting on Williams with Sheldon Richardson suspended for the first four games of the season.
The starters played into the middle of the second quarter and it was ugly.
The starting defense played without Richardson and fellow defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson Friday night. Wilkerson is nursing a strained left hamstring. The defense looked like it missed those two. It was only starters vs. starters for two drives. On those, the Jets gave up 89 yards on 9 plays and two touchdowns. The second touchdown came after Hester’s punt return gave the Falcons the ball on the Jets’ 4-yard line.
On the first drive, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan hit fullback Collin Mooney with a short pass out of the backfield that Mooney turned into a 60-yard gain. Jets linebacker Quinton Coples whiffed on the coverage on Mooney. It was a rough start for Coples, who could not get off his block a few plays later when Falcons running back Terron Ward ran past him for a 4-yard touchdown.
Ryan connected with wide receiver Leonard Hankerson for the Falcons’ second touchdown of the night, a 2-yard slant that the Jets failed to cover. It appeared to be the result of a miscommunication between cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine.
The offense was equally inept with their first five drives ending in punts. Two of those drives were three-and-outs. The offense finally broke through after the Falcons starting defense was on the sideline. Chris Ivory scored on a 33-yard touchdown run.
Fitzpatrick ended up completing 13-of-19 passes for 118 yards. The Jets’ passing game consisted of mostly short throws to the running backs or Brandon Marshall, who had four catches for 62 yards.
Adding to their struggles, the Jets picked up 10 penalties in the first half for 70 yards.
Things went better for the Jets once the Falcons starters sat already ahead 14-0. Williams sacked backup quarterback T.J. Yates for a safety in the second quarter to put the Jets on the board at 14-2. The Jets made the two-point conversion on a Fitzpatrick-to-Marshall pass after Ivory’s score to cut the Falcons’ lead to 14-10. Two Nick Folk field goals gave the Jets a 16-14 lead before halftime.
“I thought we started off a little sluggish, but we know Fitz,” guard Willie Colon said. “Fitz is a vet guy. He controls the game, he’s a great game manager and we just had to be out there with him to feel him out.”
Rookie quarterback Bryce Petty played much better Friday night than he did in his preseason debut against the Lions. He showed more poise and made some plays. He connected with DeVier Posey for a 13-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He completed 12-of-19 passing for 168 yards and the score.

Matt Ryan has short, productive night; Ryan Fitzpatrick not so much

The Falcons didn’t have Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman or Roddy White on offense Friday night in the Meadowlands, but they didn’t miss them all that much.

Matt Ryan threw a touchdown pass and set up a touchdown run during the two possessions that he played in the first quarter against the Jets. That continues his sharp start to the preseason against the Titans last week, although you can issue him one demerit for going 3-of-4 in New Jersey after completing all six passes he tried against the Titans.

Ryan, who was 4-of-5 for 75 yards overall, hit fullback Colin Mooney for a 60-yard gain on the Falcons’ opening possession on a play that saw Mooney slip past Jets linebacker Quinton Coples in coverage and then threw a touchdown pass to Leonard Hankerson when an apparent miscommunication in the Jets secondary left him wide open in the end zone.

The Jets starting defense has now given up touchdowns on all three drives that they’ve played against starting offenses, which isn’t what the team wanted to see from the unit that’s supposed to be their strength this season. On Friday night, it was tough to say they had a strength in any phase of the game.

Devin Hester had a 59-yard punt return to set up Hankerson’s score and the Jets offense lived down to the worst expectations people have for them this season. They gained 78 yards and picked up four first downs in their first five possessions with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback, committed several penalties and generally spent the night watching Fitzpatrick complete passes on checkdowns before failing to convert on third down.

Fitzpatrick stayed in for a sixth drive, which started after first-round pick Leonard Williams sacked T.J. Yates for a safety, and the first team was able to move the ball against the Falcons reserves for their first touchdown of the preseason. It allowed the Jets to end the offense’s night on a positive note and Williams picked up a second sack later in the second quarter, but there will be plenty of negatives across the board to pick through before they get to that part of the film.
