Personally I think Geno will return as our starting QB week 6 against the Redskins (10/18). I have not heard his medical or surgery results, but I'm hoping it's not a serious as first indicated ? People have played with broken or recovering broken jaws before. I'm afraid that Fitz's best days are behind him. We need Geno back ASAP.

I would prefer that not happen, only because I want Fitz to play well. If it was Geno starting, I'd want him to play well, and was moderately encouraged by what I heard.

The one thing about this situation is it takes all the controversy out of the equation for the start of the season. Fitz is your guy. No Geno looking over his shoulder, wondering when he'll get pulled.

Man I'm really hoping Petty develops sooner then later and half way ready at least for game one. I'd much rather see Petty in there struggling but progressing and learning then that wash out of a QB in Fitz. From what I'm hearing Fitz ain't looking that great in training camp anyway. Don't want to pressure and rush the kid. If Petty ain't ready then he ain't. Sit him and let him learn but if the competition is even slightly close and it appears he can handle it, throw him in there and let's see what he's got.

Got to disagree with you on this.

I'm hoping Petty can be the QB of the future, he has the physical tools, but now isn't the time to throw him in the fire.

QB's that aren't ready often develop very bad habits out of self preservation when they are put in to early. These habits are very often very hard to break as they develop. I think you'll see how green Petty is in the extended play he is going to get in pre-season. i just hope the fan base doesn't give up on him if he plays badly.

I also kind of disagree on Fitz. He is what he is. He is never going to be an elite QB, but he is not a waste of a roster spot.

IMO, as long as Fitz isn't injured, and Petty doesn't has to go in prematurely, the situation behind Fitz will do Petty a world of good. Fitz doesn't have the physical tools to be an elite NFL QB, but what he does have, and the reason he has lasted all these years in a produce now league, is a real understanding of the game.

He's a very smart guy, who, even with his limited physical skills, can perform in the NFL. Unlike Smith, he is also know as a popular locker room guy, and a leader. If he can impart some of these positive traits to a young player, who has the physical tools, the Jets may have a good player this time next year.

Just not now. Think the pressure in NYC might destroy him before he has a chance. The Jets have done this twice in a row, it hasn't worked

I hear you and can't debate what your saying. Guess I'm just being selfish and not thinking rationally. I would just rather see anyone in there. Hell, let Firemen Ed or a homeless person get in there at QB then Fitz. Well not really but you get my point.

Fitz is better than anything we had the last five years. Geno has potential that we were hoping gets realized. Don't lose faith yet.

IMO we should hold off on Petty as long as we can. I would prefer if he sits the entire year but if the season is lost then I wouldn't mind him getting action the last few games.

Ideally he is in the mix to start next season but has to earn it

Keidel: Sucker-Punch Episode More A Referendum On Jets’ Checkered History

Fans Keep Waiting For Forlorn Franchise To Turn A Corner, Only To Be Disappointed
August 12, 2015 12:54 PM

By Jason Keidel

Where do we begin?

Every pun has been posted.

Geno Smith threw the first punch and it sailed over the target.

IK Enemkpali did the Jets a favor.

The Jets finally know what we’ve known all along, that Geno Smith can’t start at quarterback.

One of the more clever counters came from The Daily News — Broadway Jaw.

But water cooler humor aside, Tuesday’s appalling moment was about more than a punch, an injury, and a player cut for his lack of impulse control.

This speaks to the cloud, the curse, the hex, the hoax, that covers the New York Jets, who haven’t played in New York in more than 30 years, and haven’t played in a Super Bowl for more than 40 years.

Everyone who spent significant time on a football field, from Aaron Rodgers to Cris Carter to Boomer Esiason, has talked about the old codas of the sport. All agree that players control the locker room. Most agree that the Jets lack control of theirs, and that the punch had nothing to do with football.

But none of them can recall a time when a peripheral player strolled up to the starting quarterback and decked him. And that speaks to the institutional impotence, incompetence, and ignominy that has hovered over the Jets for decades.

It doesn’t matter if Geno Smith owed $600 or $600,000. The fight transcended the two participants. Tuesday wasn’t just a beef between jocks, something to be stuffed under the locker room rug. It was a referendum on a franchise.
This comes weeks after Sheldon Richardson assured us his name would never again be mentioned in vain. Then, after testing positive for marijuana, Richardson allegedly went on a cinematic joyride, going 143 mph, with a gun in the front, a child in the back, and the smell of weed wafting from his car.

Saddled with the twin burdens of a foul history and a lost locker room, the Jets, no matter the regime, can’t seem to escape their karma. Usually, it’s a sportswriter’s job to offer a solution. But this one has none.

Since I spend so much time banging on the Jets, folks assume I abhor them. Actually, the reverse is true. While I bleed black & gold, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Gang Green. I rooted for the New York Sack Exchange. I rooted for Richard Todd, Ken O’Brien, and Chad Pennington. I watched the Mud Bowl, Curtis Martin’s fumble in Denver, and their two trips to the AFC title game under Rex Ryan. There’s a certain, underdog charm to the Jets. And no fan base deserves a moment in the sun more than Jets devotees.

And the truth is they assembled a decent squad this season. With new personnel, a new coach, and a new attitude, we saw a new altitude. But some people, some teams, can’t shake their past, which haunts the Jets’ present.

Now we’ve got Ryan Fitzpatrick, on his sixth team, the only player in NFL history to start for five different teams and not leave any of them with a winning record. He’s competent, but the Jets were looking for more.

Buried under his epic beard, the Harvard grad spoke in the predicted platitudes about making the most of this opportunity, as if this would somehow end differently from the other stops on his vagabond career arc.

Sucker punch. It morphs into a metaphor. Who is the sucker? The man who threw the punch, who lost his starting job for two months, or the fans who actually believe the Jets were turning a corner?

A police captain in Florham Park said that if a crime is to be charged, the victim has to press charges. If only Geno Smith were the only victim here.

As disappointed as I am at not being able to evaluate Smith thoroughly this just have sped up the process. I think there is a good chance we never see Geno in a Jets uniform again. Part of Bowles job is to weed out those who will not be here for the long run and Geno proved it in an unconventional way off the field just like Sheldon Richarson. The circus has left town but a few clowns were left behind. They will soon be gone. I feel much better today than yesterday.

1. Bring in Flynn - see what he has - learn some info about Pats along the way
2. Look for another veteran as teams start to trim rosters - someone who is an okay backup will get dropped
3. One small possible upsider - Geno has spent very little time watching football games. Got thrown into the fire a whole lot. It could be that six weeks standing next to the offensive coordinator and listening - wont be talking much - during practices and games could help his perspective on the game. Maybe.

I want Fitz to play well enough to keep us in the hunt or better, but I don't think he is capable. Then I want Geno to come back and be a competent backup if Fitz falters or is injured. Then I want to cut whatever scrub is on the roster. Then I would love to see Petty and Geno battle it out next year. Good thing is Geno's injury has nothing to do with playing the game so he will be able to still throw it around at practice to stay sharp.

Soft spot for the Jets? How about getting facts correct. Keith Byers fumble killed them.

Quick question---how does Fitzpatrick not keep us in the hunt 4-6 weeks? Yet he had a bad Texans team in the hunt last year? You do realize in even his worst year in Buffalo, and the past two years, despite being mediocre, are better than any season Geno has put up, right?

I know that but if we start 0-6 then that's not in the hunt.

If we start 0-6, it won't fall on Fitzpatrick's shoulders. That would be an all around cluster-F.

The defense is better than 2009's. Fitzpatrick may not win us games but we won't really lose them either. They protect the ball, they will be fine

Do you really think Fitz is that big a drop from Geno? Have our chances changed that much?
