I hear what you are saying taking a step back is great I hope that works but what happens next if he steps forward? There are only so many steps back you can take until you are against a wall. I see two choices there wait to get hit and hope it does not happen or hit 1st. In my personal experience if someone is being aggressive towards you expect to be punched. Also from personal experience it is much better to get the 1st shot in then a possible 2nd if you are able.

What if I made derogatory remarks about your mother? Or slept with your wife? Or kept cursing at your kid because he struck out with the bases loaded? Or made a racially insensitive remark and continued to poke it in your face every time I got the chance? None of those "require" a physical response, but I wouldn't be shocked if someone reacted that way in the moment.

Point is, we don't know what set IK off, but I have to think there are PLENTY of things that you'd react to that fall short of "endangering the lives of my family members". He acted in the moment and doesn't have a job to show for it. But I am amazed that a solitary punch in the heat of the moment is being treated like a premeditated attack with intent to kill . . .
