GMF's take on the state of the New York Jets

Lets begin I am not nor affiliated with media or the team just a fan with an assumption from all reports and whispers through social media... I believe that Todd Bowles is the right choice as Head Coach of the New York Jets... I am interested in seeing former Head of Scouting with the Houston Texans can accomplish as the General Manager with our beloved team...

Looking at the roster right now, have to be intrigued with all the young talent stacked throughout and pleased with the development of other said Jets players from previous regimes... There are some questionable moves that will take place that fans will be at ends about but will be needed for this regime to continue to build and progress overall...

As much as I was for Darrelle Revis when we drafted him, and watched how he hung strung the front office to get his money it was good times... He is and will be one of the best draft selections the Jets ever made, yet they also will be known as the organization that traded him away, then he was released and signed with our division foe the New England Patriots... What bothers me the most is he won a Super Bowl with them, and then we paid him to come back here... Kind of a slap in our faces... This year was his fall from grace and for the best of this team is to send him packing... No position change, no renegotiation of his current deal... Eat the dead loss and move on...

There are five veterans on this team from previous regimes that will be the sole discussion on if they fit what we are currently attempting to build with this regime of Maccagnan and Bowles... David Harris has been one of the stables at linebacker but father time has come and past with his career... Along with Harris, Nick Mangold durability is his main issue nowadays and moving forward it would be best served if the team parts ways either trade/simple release or Nick decides it is time to retire... These two stable pieces would be welcomed additions to the coaching staff, but doubt there would be consideration on Bowles or the players part...

Brandon Marshall has his next gig lined up and it is time he makes that move... Like Marshall, Eric Decker who has been a disappointment to this point is being nice... Signed a big contract and hasn't delivered with Rex Ryan or Todd Bowles... Like Marshall, it looks like they would be better off this team... Maybe they still continue their careers elsewhere but for this team we need to develop not pay for past production on other teams...

The final player, has been under the radar with his fall from dependability is kicker Nick Folk... Hopefully the team realizes he is not as a sure thing as he used to be and moves on...

Speculations about trades, or attempt of trades will become a big distraction this off season on whom they are dealing and to what team... One name already on the block is defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson who since has kept his name out of the media and stepped up his play on the field... Looking at the roster at a glance there are some other players that could be dealt... We will have to wait n see on this front...

If one had to guess why Todd Bowles is committing himself to Ryan Fitzpatrick, it's not out of sheer stupidity but the willingness to win... As an organization this team has been a loser for years and not to play the players that give the team the best chance to win is not who he is and I applaud him for that... This team is on the right path to future success but no where did it say it was going to be smooth sailing, yeah I know bumpy as all hell but the same saying is true: "Rome wasn't built in a day"...

I believe through the draft either draft selections or free agent prospects we will continue to improve the talent throughout this roster... Expect some players that were let go from the ninety man last year to make a return this off season and compete for a roster spot next year... Players like center Kyle Friend, kicker Ross Martin, linebacker Taiwan Jones will be at the fore front... Expect players like Freddie Bishop, Doug Middleton, Bryson Keeton, Brandon Bryant, Victor Ochi, Craig Watts and Ronald Martin be real considerations to make the active 53...

The turnover from year one to year two seemed to hurt the overall stock of this team's ability to be successful... Have to think the hard times are now behind us as we continue to build through the draft and possibly a couple of key signings in free agency... Any promising young talent who are entering this off season as restricted free agents could be targeted especially if there is no pick compensation back to the original team who is tendering that player(s)... There are a few of names to watch out for: RB Isaiah Crowell, Browns - WR Josh Gordon, Browns -- FS Adrian Phillips, Chargers ...

As for me I look at some players that were considered long shots to be anything but backups and special team players that have carved out a role that is important for the growth of the overall team's destination of being competitive... Now will they continue to develop with us or will they be let go to continue their success with another organization... Time will tell but these eight players have proven they belong at this level when no one thought they could be stable forces on any roster: RG Brian Winters, OC Wesley Johnson, LT Ben Ijalana, CB Marcus Williams, SS Rontez Miles, LB Mike Catapano, LS Tanner Purdum, LB Julian Stanford...

Nice consolidation of thoughts.
I think you are right in theory about the moves, but some aren't realistic to me.
Decker will be back, Harris will finish his final year with reduced playing time as Lee takes over, Marshall has declined some but is still our best wr. If Anderson takes over wr1 great, but I don't see that happening soon.
I doubt know Mangolds health well enough to know if he has one more year.
The thing is,almost all of these guys could take a pay cut,and still be contributors. Find a replacement before you just fire or 5 best players.

I agree...

The overall appearance of the team is daunting at times but in reality no one is ever looking for the silver lining... With this team it has been doom n gloom for so long that no one is looking for the bright light at the end of this current tunnel we are in...

Sorry I don't mean to be so optimistic but looking at how from year one to two under this new regime several players have made leaps and bounds in progression:

OG Brian Winters
OL Wesley Johnson
OL Ben Ijalana
OL Brent Qvale

CB Marcus Williams
SS Rontez Miles
LB Lorenzo Mauldin

QB Bryce Petty
RB Bilal Powell
WR Quincy Enunwa

If this is what has gone well in terms of development I can't wait to see who else makes the leap this off season...

Replacements are in house:

Nick Mangold - Wesley Johnson (RFA)
Brandon Marshall - Robby Anderson
Eric Decker - Quincy Enunwa
Ryan Clady - Ben Ijalana (UFA)
Breno Giacomini - Brent Qvale
David Harris - Darron Lee
Darrelle Revis - Marcus Williams (RFA)

not saying that they will go this route but it opens the door to draft future(s) this year and let them develop as spot role players behind the new starters... the best way to develop player(s) is to give them live game reps regardless the amount they can grow within the system and when they are ready they can take over permanently allowing the team to add additional potential moving forward...

Robby is not ready to be our feature wr, enunwa is an h back, Decker is slot.

Our linemen certainly have developed the most this year.
Petty is better than last year, but not Game ready.
Marcus Williams would be starting this year if he was good enough. Revis is so bad, it worries me that wr haven't demoted him or switched position.

the off season is where everyone will or won't take the next step...

compared to the current roster, we won't know where they will be at the start of next season so can't guarantee either way but the potential is there for it to happen...

Enunwa is a receiver who can take over for Decker who lines up in the slot while allowing some like Austin S. Jenkins to play the H Back role if he is still on the roster next year...

I don't see Devin Smith on the roster after this season but anything could happen...

Robby Anderson might not be ready now but he will continue to develop and if he bulks up some weight on his tiny frame he could be ready by seasons's start next year to take the torch to prove his case of being a go to guy...

I don't believe in #1 or #2 labels for receiver you are either a possession receiver, speed guy or end zone threat and everyone can fill those roles moving forward... do we draft or sign a prospect free agent, go after a restricted free agent receiver or sign another veteran free agent to join our potential depth chart at this position but the time of Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker are over...

Will Decker be back maybe but this regime is NOT tied to him... Marshall brought in by this regime, has done nothing but been a distraction off the field and has produced little on the field...

Who knows maybe we will attempt to sign Alshon Jeffrey, Michael Floyd or Terrance Williams to be the next big name here...

Not saying either way but the options are there, can keep debating this but at the end of the day the regime will make the necessary changes and move forward just hopefully they choose potential for future rather than win now approach...

I always like Brandon Marshall, also thought Eric Decker could of been a good addition but neither have been able to succeed here...
As for David Harris, he is a rock but drafting Darron Lee quietly stated that his time is coming... Could be this year, could be after next...

Marshall hasn't succeeded here???? I completely disagree with that. He had the best year of his career last year. The only reason he has had a poor year is because Fitz shit the bed this season. The KC game really did a number on Fitz and the CS..... and neither has been the same since. Now your assessment on Decker is spot on. He has been here 3 yrs, and had injury issues for 2 of them. I didn't like him in Denver, and I don't care for him here. If I had my choice, I'd keep Marshall and dump Decker on an injury settlement

consistency with Brandon Marshall is the problem... as of late he has been a disappointment to say the least, if you look at his stats over the course of his career:

4MLTfJR.png

Statistically Brandon Marshall had career feats last season but more of it was the continuity he had on the field with Fitzpatrick... This past off season where was the chemistry oh thats right Fitz was in contract dispute... It may not of hurt him, but it really did because him not being here disallowed the offensive players to build that continuity with their quarterback which in turned we have witnessed another nightmare of an offensive year with a group of players trying to get on the same page...

Now for all his off the field antics backing his quarterback to get his pay day the one thing they forgot to do was play some catch to keep each other in sync with each other...

Last year was good but was it him that was good? 10 drops of those 10, 8 of them were on 3rd down and in the end zone (crucial moment drops)... Unacceptable...

Targets to Receptions: 2015 (63%) -- 2016 (47%) <<<< this is unacceptable... Last year he had a banner year due to the balance of a solid rushing attack along with other options in Decker (when healthy) and the emergence of Quincy Enunwa... But so far this year he has had the opposite of a banner year, besides his rookie season he will have career lows in every category this is not what you expect from your star lead receiver no matter how bad the season has been going he should be still producing...

2017 $7.5 Million non-guaranteed -- there is no way this regime can keep him on the roster in good faith, maybe if he takes a large pay cut to about $4.8 for one season then I would say that it is worth the gamble... It opens the door to bringing in a troubled individual to pair him with while this years rookies continue to develop without having the world dropped on their shoulders in our New York Market...

I'm not ready to write off Devin Smith just yet. Is he injury prone like Dee Milliner, or was last year an anomaly? I'm surprised he hasn't been activated yet, but it may be an indication of what the CS thinks of him. Regardless, until he is out of the picture, I think you have to consider him one of the core of the young WR group. We have big physical guys in Enunwa and Peake, field stretchers in Anderson and Smith, and a slot guy in Marshall. We'll probably keep either Decker or Marshall, but not both for one more year as insurance and mentoring purposes.

coming out of college -- drafted then suffering an injury that kept him out of off season conditioning and training camp to improve his one dimensional game of go deep to catch the ball isn't tantalizing for a receiver at this level... mind you our starting qb doesn't throw deep passes well for this kid to be effective...

then during last season he suffers at the end of the season an ACL injury that kept him out of training camp and off season conditioning for the second straight year...

this kid has no skills but run fast, he isn't shifty and after an ACL injury his one attribute is gone...

he is activated but inactive on game day because he isn't ready... placing him on IR would continue to cripple his development since he is not available during the off season so right now his off season is during the season...

until he proves he can be a vital role player will he stick around but we have solid competition now and probably brought in either via draft and/or free agency that will put his roster spot in jeopardy... Bowles states no one job is safe, so with that saying have to believe from here on out he is on the bubble... he has no time to waste on developing his craft since he is just a guy with speed, he has a lot to make up for...

I think we delve into free agency for one maybe two receivers and why not if we free up the cap with some casualty cuts...

Bringing in an Alshon Jeffrey or Micheal Floyd to pair up with Q, Anderson as the starting three receivers would bolster this unit... Having JMarsh, Peake as depth to add another rookie to continue the developmental aspect of this position would benefit long term...

Now if Devin Smith proves he belongs then he grabs that sixth roster spot but he has to prove it first...

What do you think of Peake as a possible starter/contributor for the future. I know we haven't seen a lot to make an educated assessment, but curious as to potential.

Charone Peake is a speed/deep threat receiver... He has shown great promise early with that fumble recovery ran for a touchdown, this is a player that can grow into a starter role but he will need time to develop his overall game... In college he was succumbed to a talented depth chart and basically disappeared... If he works on his route running he could eventually make key plays to crack the starting rotation... With his size he could be a go to guy as a red zone threat...

Year two will be a big step for him, but if he is going to be anything he has to do it by year three...

oddly enough we have those guys throughout the roster now, thanks to Maccagnan a true pro scout not just a glorified accountant pretending to know talent...

practice squad we have three guys that show just enough promise as Peake at the receiver position...

guard Craig Watts, defensive lineman Brandin Bryant and safety Doug Middleton...

this upcoming off season is going to be fun... to see all these young men making the jump forward...

can't wait for the pro days and combine, there is great talent in the mid rounds and if we play it right we can bolster our growing potential moving forward...

TOJ's take on offseason moves:

As we barrel towards the 6th straight year that the New York Jets miss the playoffs, we turn our eye to the offseason. Kevin had our first look at prospects that the Jets should have their eye on right here, but this week’s Pick Six focuses on 6 moves the team should make before we get there. These are realistic moves, and not Madden-style moves. Let’s take this one back like a Ryan Fitzpatrick throw in Arrowhead:

1. Trade DL Sheldon Richardson to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2nd round pick ($8.09M cap savings)
Trading Muhammed Wilkerson would be the move I would make, PR hit be damned, but no one wanted him when he was coming off a career year so I don’t think anyone bites now coming off a down year and with almost $27M guaranteed left on his deal. Trading Sheldon Richardson now, the second best DL out of the 3 the Jets currently employ, let’s you play Wilkerson/Leonard Williams/Steve McClendon as your starting DL in the base 3-4 the Jets employ. This also nets the Jets a 2nd round pick which gives the Jets 4 of the first 128 picks and 7 picks total in next year’s draft without expected comp picks for Damon Harrison, Chris Ivory, and Demario Davis. The Cowboys need a young game changer up front on defense and the Jets and Cowboys talked trade at the deadline so it’s wouldn’t be surprising to see the Jets revisit talks with Dallas and settle on a second round pick.

2. Cut WR Eric Decker ($8.75M in cap space)
Dealing Decker after the two injuries he’s sustained and with an almost $9M cap hit is going to be borderline impossible. Releasing Decker is the best option even though I think Decker’s game can age a little better than Brandon Marshall’s going forward. Decker won’t get you the return Marshall will, and he nets you a higher cap savings. I’ve been a Marshall fan since he entered the league and I think he’s been the only real leader on an offensive unit that is devoid of any identity. He has struggled this year in large part because of the QB throwing him the ball. While Ryan Fitzpatrick is throwing interceptions to opposing teams and young guys under the bus, Marshall owns his failures and continues to actually give a damn about every game. In a lot of ways Fitzpatrick, Darrelle Revis, and Wilkerson represent what’s wrong with this team while Marshall, Williams, and Richardson should be the guys you build around. It would be a bad move if the Jets have to get rid of 2 of those guys. Marshall stays and Decker goes, which nets you a $8.75M savings.

3. Sign Bengals LT Andrew Whitworth
The free agent offensive line class doesn’t have much depth, but the best guy available is Bengals LT Andrew Whitworth. He should be Mike Maccagnan’s first call on the first day of free agency. Whitworth has been solid on the Bengals OL and, while not a splashy name, he is a stabilizing force. A team that will need two tackles can’t go in with question marks; better to sign the solid veteran and then take a chance on a underperforming young player like Riley Reiff from Detroit to play RT. Whitworth would also lessen the need for the Jets to reach for an OL prospect like Cam Robinson in the top 10.

4. Release CB Darrelle Revis ($7.3M cap space)
$6M dead cap hit? Watching Revis sign with the Bills? Reopening old wounds? All worth it to be rid of the greatest player to ever wear a Jets uniform after what can only be described as a clinic on how to mail it in this year. To go from a defensive player of the year candidate to not even a dime corner in this defense is astounding. I can point to the concussion sustained against the Texans as a reason for the scared tackling, but he’s been getting beat like a drum by 4th and 5th wideouts with his only good game coming against Larry Fitzgerald. Take that with him refusing to take responsibility for his poor play and, If he doesn’t retire, I’m releasing him and taking the cap savings to take aim at a free agent cornerback to replace him.

5. Resign Geno Smith
This one won’t be popular, but if the Jets are serious about this Christian Hackenberg as the franchise QB, then the Jets will need a bridge to get there. They can go out and sign Jay Cutler, trade for Tony Romo, or resign Fitzpatrick if they really want to go crazy but I think the best bet is to resign Geno Smith to a one year-prove it deal where he competes with Bryce Petty and the aforementioned Hackenberg for the starting job. Smith can get one year to salvage his career, the Jets get some continuity at QB, and Hack doesn’t have to be rushed as he learns a new system. Smith will probably come cheap, but the Jets should face competition for his services from teams like Jacksonville, Denver, and possibly Minnesota so they’d be smart to lock Smith in before he hits the open market.

6. Fire Chan Gailey and hire Norv Turner as Offensive Coordinator
After a great year last year, Old Man Gailey has been downright awful this year both in the red zone and with his curious usage of his most talented players. I think a head coach cannot be afraid to fire underperforming coordinators, and Gailey has underperformed this year. Same goes for Kacy Rodgers, but he seems to be Bowles’ version of Dennis Thurman at this point and probably won’t let go. Norv Turner has been a head coach in this league before, has had a lot of success as a playcaller in this league, and has developed young QBs at almost everywhere he’s been. Hiring Turner also gives you an in-house candidate to turn to in case Bowles sputters next year and you want to make a change. Turner checks off all the boxes and, as we’ve seen with the hire of Wade Phillips, Rod Marinelli, and Jim Schwartz as coordinators sometimes the best move you make is the person you hire to oversee one side of the ball for you.

With these moves (as well as the expected moves like not resigning Fitzpatrick, cutting Marcus Gilchrist, Nick Folk, and Breno Giacomini, and releasing Ryan Clady and the Jets start the offseason like this:

7 confirmed draft picks (3 additional compensatory picks), 10 total picks
$41.5M in cap space (before the Whitworth and Smith contracts)

I don't think Whitworth signing is the answer short term... Rather role with Ben Ijalana, short term signing to allow a draft prospect time to acclimate to this level of play...

and believe we could or should be able to trade Decker to get some much needed compensation back from his lack of production...

As for Sheldon Richardson, I doubt the Cowboys will pony up a 2nd for him as they were offering a third plus additional late picks...
There are two teams that would make more sense in terms of compensation, the Browns and Titans...
Maccagnan is a frugal negotiator and has gotten good talent for peanuts... Expect he will get something favorable for Richardson...

I change my stance on Marcus Gilchrist, even though he has not been the play-maker we hoped for his play has been solid enough... On the other defensive back Buster Skrine still feel he is on his way out the door...

I dislike Chan Gailey because of his predictability with his game plan and play calling but don't think Norv Turner works for us and this roster... Not sure yet who would be a good fit just know that Norv like Gailey are not the guys...

Re-signing Geno Smith not resign is a good move because he has chemistry with this team but if we are getting rid of Gailey then Smith's return is not necessary... Only if Gailey stays makes it worth bringing back a veteran option familiar with the system to compete for the starting role with Petty...

What are you guys talking about Decker has been very productive for us...... This year and his injury shouldn't be held against him.

Decker is 28 he stays... We need his steady presence to help Anderson Peake and the Young guys alonh with Enunwa.

We Cut
Revis
Harris
Marshall
Mangold
Henderson
Giacomini
Clady

This is $49 million in cap space for any FA we need or want

Sign a vet QB like Foles, Hoyer or Glennon(maybe Romo)
We aren't getting much in return for Richardson this year... so we need to keep him and let him play for his big contract then trade him....
Keep the CS together one more year. Why? Well if we suck and don't improve they all go....
None of this BS the new OC/DC system is a learning process and year 2 will be better.... NO NO NO.... Improve as whole in 2017 if not fire them midseason and see if that does anything and if not wholesale changes for 2018

Eric Decker will be 30 years old next season...

his contract is not worth the trouble of having him on the roster... he does not belong to this regime and they are not obligated to keep him moving forward... again Q could be the front runner on the roster moving forward, then the team could go sign a tandem option to pair Q with while having the three young bucks as depth... throw in S. Jenkins as the H Back and/or slot guy they have weapons...

btw just because Q is playing the h back role this year his game has elevated to the point of him able to be one of the lead guys on the outside as well as his aggressive play in the slot...
