Hackenberg Shows Progress

technically satisfactory performance by Hack

Would have looked better if a couple of fine throws had not been dropped

nothing great, but solid, hit open guys, threw with good accuracy

Meh. There were two balls dropped. Marshall dropped one, about 5 yards up-field, and the rookie FB dropped another that was only going gain about 3.

He made progress yes....but no one is going to tell me he when through his progressions.. Frankly, he threw to his 1st read and even looked that way every time. WCO QB are not supposed to "telegraph" their threws...

As Pennington said on the sideline interview he has a ways to go.... Assume at this point petty will be cut or on PS...

thanks for the intel USANYJ..

missing one or two shots down field speaks to my point that the game plan for hackenberg was to keep the kid away from throwing for chunks of yardage..

if bowles isn't as full of shit as i believe him to be, hackenberg gets nothing less than the lion's share of first team reps next week & starts in detroit..

oh, & is given the chance to make big boy throws, for all of jet coaches, front office, teammates, media & fan base to see..

Couldn't agree more. It makes me wonder if ownership told Bowles that we know this year will be rough. See what we have in the kid and go from there. This is hacks year to show something because if we are as bad as expect. The quarterback next year will be Darnold or Rosen. He needs to start from day one and go until week 17

Finally watched the entire game or up until the point Hack stop playing and he wasn't bad at all. Especially the last two drives. He seemed to be getting more comfortable or they wanted him to take a few shots down field. He throw with zip, accuracy and purpose. Even went deep or sorta. The fumble seemed to be a miscommunication on who's part I don't know. He will have to do alot more IMO over the next three games to take the job from the old man 38 year old, 10 team wash out vet. Hopefully he starts game two and plays a full half and proves a lot more then. They're giving him the opportunity, he just has to make the best of it and take it.

I think we, as fans, are showing progress, too. We've moved on from discussing if he was capable of improving his footwork, other mechanics, and accuracy (no coaches or reporters injured ) to his ability to carry out the game plan he was given. So, I guess that means he is making progress, too.

So Hack played well under the premise of him executing the one read and a quick throw (5.1 per completion). I guess that's all we could expect for now. His shots downfield weren't close but it's only one game.

I also don't want McCown playing but I think that point is moot since Bowles will play the best guy and he always sides with veterans..

I think our defense will keep us in more games than we expected, especially if we can get to the QB.

Meh, 5yds on first down is huge that dropped hurt the drive in Marshalls case and the FB had some open field to get a few more yds than 3.. So kinda important to move the chains in football and the drops hurt the rhythm of the offense. Especially a WC offense that is built on short to intermediate rhythmic passing and counting on the YAC....

we all know about the foundation of the west coast offense.. but it certainly didn't get in the way bowles OKing a fly pattern from mccown to anderson, did it??

bowles, under no circumstances wants anyone but mccown to be the starter until we are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.. LOLz hell, even at that point, if left to his own devices, he would probably keep mccown in.. my guess is he hoping to have won enough games with a team in full re-build to get another shot at being some other franchise's head coach..

this is is a zero sum game "coach bowles" is playing.. of this, i'm quite certain..

While I agree that it's probable that Bowles plays McCown longer than he should to possibly keep his job it is not exactly zero sum gain. If McCown wins one game too many to keep us from getting our franchise guy for next year than even though Bowles may stay on as HC the fans are the big losers..

I'm a firm believer that bowles has been told by the higher ups that he will keep his job beyond this year anyway. This roster isn't built to win and its in rebuild. If he can keep the guys from killing each other I think he gets another shot next year.

My hope would be that the brain trust can understand what we have with this team. Young and in rebuild mode. The biggest question is if hack is the qb to build around. You need the season to answer that. Not 6 games at the end when the team is dejected and doesn't want to play. Like you said, if McCown wins one too many games and we don't learn about hack AND we miss out on the top flight talent in next years draft. That would be the worst thing to happen this season. As much as I love my jets, and we all do, we can be realists I think. This is going to be a rough year. but I would rather watch a rough year of a young guy learning and growing, than a rough year of a has been or never was winning an extra game to screw up the near future.

The kids have to play. Hack needs the full season, this needs to be what this year is about. And I would hope that the brain trust and bowles are thinking the same way

If the Jets don't get 5 yards each time they touch the ball they will be punting every series. It looks like they won't have many plays over 10 yards with Hack.

Meh, not really true the ball the FB dropped #40 (can't recall his name) he had no open field. He dropped the ball at the 50 from a stationary position. Back turned to the opposing goal line. The DB #35 was all over him, and took him down the second he dropped the ball. There was not going to be any YAC.

Like i said no impact plays dropped. Every game has a dropped ball or two, and a lucky play or two that usually balance out. if there is a rash of dropped balls, or a wide open WR drops a 50 yard TD, it can dramatically impact the game. There was none of that. The WR's also played a pretty good game.

The lucky play for Hackenberg that more then balanced out the two minor drops was at 2.48 of the 2nd, from the Jets 10 yard line. Hack threw a very bad ball that hit a DL, ball bounced up into the air, and went right thru the arms of Tenn's #50. it would have been a pick 6. Very lucky play.

All n all Hack had a very nice game with the game plan that he was given. I'm happy with that. Lets see what he does against Detroit if they give him a full play book, and 1st team reps, which I think he earned with his performance against the Titans

if bowles has been has informed he can't shit the bed badly enough this season to get fired, then wow, just wow!! & keep in mind, bowles will be in the last year of his contract in '18.. so at some point he will need to be extended before next season..

that in all likelihood would be an absolute PR nightmare depending how this season goes..

but if you're right, how in the hell would whoever bowles answers to be good with starting mccown??

what's to be gained aside from potentially winning enough games to miss out on drafting a potential franchise QB??

that & not finding out if you already have one on the current roster??

I'm not so sure about that. What I'm basing that on is the 45 min delay before the presser when Harris and Decker were cut. Bowles was clearly annoyed, and out of the loop about it. He wasn't informed the cuts were going to take place. The cuts came as a surprise to him.

That is really odd that a HC isn't informed that two of his key players are going to be axed. Not what you would do with a HC who's job is secure. More like what might happen to a HC who is the designated fall guy if the season goes sour.

If Bowles has not been told he's safe for beyond 2018, how can anyone blame him for playing McCown? To me, that would be brutal, taking away a guy's veterans, telling him to start the younger developing QB, and then making his job dependent on performance.

He needs to be told he's not on the hot seat, and then be told to develop Hack for the starting job.

at this point Hackenberg has shown progress, but needs to be consistent... He has shown improvement in understanding where his hot routes are and getting the ball out to the right receiver... Efficiency but not threatening... He has to have more help from the running game that was M.I.A. against Titans... Blocking was sound but needs to get better, if Hack needed time to find a receiver he would of been dumped over and over again...

lets hope at Detroit there is more production from the RBs, that will help to let Hackenberg scan the field unless he is being handcuffed by Bates and Morton because they don't think he is ready for that next step in his naturalization/development...

we've had this conversion before sack.. in a nut shell, judge the guy on if veterans are now held accountable for awful disinterested play.. that & showing up for meetings is no longer optional.. have the team ready to ball on a weekly basis.. find out if hackenberg is the long-term answer!!

if he can do those things, i'll eat as much crow as JFU wants to feed me..

I really think this is all true! he apparently had them running gassers the other day when Mauldin and someone else threw punches. I would do that with my high school baseball players, so im not impressed , but it is something I guess.
