Jets Practice Report | Running Backs Break Free in Sunday's Open Session

Dalvin Cook Visits Green & White; Will McDonald Has Pair of Splash Plays

Jul 30, 2023
Ethan Greenberg
Team Reporter

Zonovan Knight continues to impress as he had two chunk gains down the left sideline and showed off the afterburners. Knight and Michael Carter worked with the first two units with rookies Israel Abanikanda and Travis Dye behind them.

"Love the running back room," HC Robert Saleh said. "Four really good ones. There's some good competition already between Izzy, Michael and Bam to try to get those two and three spots. What I've actually been loving about the run game is our offensive line. They've come on strong, they've been doing really well and trying to establish a new line of scrimmage. They're playing with a lot of fight. At this moment, very pleased with where our offensive line is. It's a long way to go, but love the way they've been playing."

As for Cook, Saleh does not have an expectation on when the Pro Bowl running back would make a decision on the next chapter of his career. Cook was released recently by the Vikings and is a free agent. With or without Cook, Saleh said the Jets are expecting Breece Hall to return to practice about two weeks after Thursday's preseason game.

"He's coming up quick," Saleh said. "He's coming along good."

Will McDonald Flashes

The team finished practice with a move-the-ball situational period. The offense started on itstheir own 37-yard line down, 14-3, with 41 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

QB Aaron Rodgers led his group down the field in seven plays that resulted in a field goal. He dialed up a deep pass to Malik Taylor along the sideline on the first play of the drive that D.J. Reed deftly batted down. Tyler Conklin saved the drive with a long third-down catch near the sideline where he slipped behind the defense. Mecole Hardman caught a quick pass over the middle for a short catch-and-run that eventually set up Greg Zeurlein's chip shot.

The offense did its job, but first-round pick Will McDonald did his, too. He applied pressure on back-to-back plays, beating Max Mitchell, who was playing left tackle, with a power move and a spin to the outside on consecutive plays.

"He looks good," Saleh said. "He has to learn power. He has all the freakish ability. He can win with speed, he can counter inside, but until he gets those tackles playing a little more heavy footed because they're afraid of your power, all of that stuff won't matter. So he's learning that aspect of it, but I think he's going to show really well in the preseason. He's shown well here."

Jetcetera

WR Allen Lazard came down the catch of the day in the red-zone period, climbing the ladder with Jordan Whitehead in great coverage on a perfect pass from Aaron Rodgers. … WR Garrett Wilson has a low-ankle sprain and the team is being cautious. … WR Corey Davis (sickness) didn't practice but is expected back soon. … Greg Zeurleinconnected on all six of his field goal attempts. … The third-team defense stuffed the third-team offense on a run from the 3-yard line for what looked like a win in the competition period. The defense, however, was called for offside. It didn't matter because there was a botched QB-center exchange on the next play. The offense did pushups as a result. … C.J. Uzomah had a big gain on a tight end screen.

He can pull a Saquon and need a full year to get back to 100%, or he can pull an AP and be back to 100% game 1.

Just no way of knowing, and with how the RB position looked after Breece went down, having another capable back just makes sense. RB’s take the most amount of punishment out of all positions. Having a stable of capable players is just smart football.
I think on the Jets, the qb takes the most punishment

Jets Practice Report | Aaron Rodgers, Offense Went 'Back and Forth' with Defense

Mekhi Becton Has Impressive Showing; Randall Cobb Is Back in the Mix

Jul 31, 2023
by Ethan Greenberg & Eric Allen

The offense and defense exchanged metaphorical punches in Monday's Jets practice as both sides enjoyed a fair share of victories.

"I thought it was good," HC Robert Saleh said. "A lot of energy today, lot of back and forth. I thought it was a really good competitive day in all three phases."

In the situational period to end practice, the defense stopped the first-team offense in three plays. The offense started on its own 47-yard line, down by 28-24, with 58 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and no timeouts. On first down, Aaron Rodgers connected with TE Tyler Conklin on the sideline. But momentum quickly stalled as Allen Lazard couldn't corral Rodgers' pass on second down and the offense had a false start on third before Tony Adams picked off Rodgers on a deep pass over the middle of the field.

Rodgers, however, had the last laugh in the next period. Set up with first-and-10 on the 12-yard line, still down, 28-24, Rodgers fired a pass to Lazard over the middle and he ran it in for the score.

Earlier in practice, the Jets had a period where the offense started on its own 2-yard line. Rodgers got the defense to jump for a free play, but the first team couldn't capitalize to move the chains. Wes Schweitzer, running with the first team at center, snapped the ball over Rodgers' head on third down. The future Hall of Fame signal-caller ran back, scooped up the ball and rolled to his right before delivering a rope to Lazard on the sideline that would've been a first down, but the wideout wasn't able to haul in the pass.

"Standing back there and just listening, I'd jump every play," Saleh said of Rodgers' attack at the line of scrimmage. "It's a pretty advanced cadence. I've even talked to Coach [Matt] LaFleur about it in Green Bay. A lot of guys are learning it, we're straining to learn it. It's an advanced cadence system, so he's straining both sides of the ball."

Mekhi Becton had his most complete practice of training camp Monday. Becton was impressive in 1-on-1s against the defensive line and in team periods, showing light feet and strong clamps. The 2020 first-round pick will be on a pitch count in Thursday's preseason game, his first game action since Week 1 2021.

"Mekhi has had back-to-back really good practices," Saleh said. "He's been able to finish all the way through and he's getting stronger on that knee. I think he's getting more confidence in it. The big thing for him is rather than rush to be a first teamer, let's rush and see us get through a game and have that ability to finish a game, a practice, a week. There's no denying his talent, but right now it's about building confidence, building strength, the endurance. Once all that comes, then we'll take the next step and see how he can perform with the 1s and all that."

Jetcetera
The Jets will practice in pads on Tuesday and that will be followed by a Wednesday walk-through. The team will fly to Ohio Wednesday afternoon and line up against the Browns Thursday night at the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, OH. …. Wideouts Garrett Wilson (ankle) and Corey Davis (illness) did not practice. Davis got in some conditioning work to the side and Robert Saleh indicated he could return Tuesday. … Fresh off the PUP list, Randall Cobb jumped in with the returners in a punt drill and the veteran receiver also caught a pass over the middle from Rodgers in a team period. … Cornerback Jimmy Moreland stole a reception away from Jerome Kapp and returned a Chris Streveler pass for a score. … Tim Boyle hit Xavier Gipson over the middle and the rookie was off to the races. … Carl Lawson was in the backfield on consecutive plays when Zach Wilson and the offense were backed up to the 2-yard-line. …. Rookie RB Israel Abanikanda sprung free for a long run during a team period. … T Duane Brown, who had offseason shoulder surgery, continues to get in rigorous conditioning during practice. With Brown on the PUP list, Billy Turner is lining up with the first team across from second-year T Max Mitchell.

The New York Jets first preseason game is just around the corner and that means training camp is heating up at Florham Park. Back to discuss the latest and greatest are our writers Paul ‘Boy Green’ Esden Jr. and Michael Obermuller.

Today’s NYJ mailbag will touch on the newfound cap space courtesy of Aaron Rodgers and Quinnen Williams, Kwon Alexander’s free agent decision, players that have changed their fate early in camp (for better or for worse), and what to do about Mekhi Becton.

Jets Players That Have ‘Changed Their Fate’ at Training Camp, For Better or For Worse

1. Give me a Jets player that you thought would get cut before the start of training camp that has already changed their fate in your mind.

Boy Green:

This might sound like a weird answer, but I’ll say wide receiver Jason Brownlee. I thought he was firmly on the bubble heading in but at this current moment, I believe he’s a roster lock barring something crazy.

The Jets have a Tony Adams-like love for the young man, and this could be a hidden gem that the Jets get credit for many years to come.

Quite frankly, he has the potential to be a long-time future starter for the Jets, and I could totally see it. This kid has wowed me. He is going to be someone to keep an eye on now and in the future.

Obermuller:

Brownlee makes sense, and I agree with that assessment. I’m caught between two players myself — running back Zonovan Knight and cornerback Bryce Hall.

I’m more confident Hall makes the roster after the Week 1 suspension to Brandin Echols, but I had the former starter pegged as a cut candidate before that news came about. With a surplus of cap space and a clear need of experience at backup cornerback, I’d be shocked if Hall is cut now.

Knight, on the other hand, has seemingly outplayed Michael Carter and rookie Israel Abanikanda at camp. That means even if the Jets sign Dalvin Cook, maybe Knight stays and someone like Carter goes instead.

2. Is there a Jets player that you were really confident would make the team that you now believe could be cut?

BG:

Michael Carter, the running back. I thought for sure he’d be a part of this team but I’m leaning towards a future trade or cut.

The Cook news could certainly affect this dramatically, but perhaps regardless of the veteran, MC could find his way out.

They have Breece Hall, “Izzy,” and Knight. How many running backs will they keep? Four? Three and a fullback? Who knows.

MO:

Based on my last response, I can’t argue with the Carter selection. Mine may sound even crazier, but my gut is telling me Mekhi Becton won’t be on the final roster.

Technically, he’d probably be traded away, not cut, but his frustrations with the coaching staff combined with his lackluster play coming off knee surgery is trending toward an unhappy ending in New York.

Everyone wanted this to turn into a comeback story for the ages, but as of now, Becton can barely beat out Billy Turner for a starting job. I’m just not seeing it.

3. Now that Rodgers, Williams, and every member of the 2023 rookie class all have new contracts, what would you do with the final $15.98 million in cap space ahead of a win-now season?

BG:

I’m dishing out a Cook contract with a $4M or $5M base with up to $2M or $3M in incentives.

That way if Breece Hall is anyway compromised, you’re covered. If he comes back strong then you have what the kids call a first-world problem.

I’d also explore some additional depth at either linebacker or safety — probably linebacker. The Alexander dream is dead with him in Pittsburgh, and I want some security at the second level of the defense. If C.J. Mosley or Quincy Williams gets hurt, the Jets don’t have any great answers behind them.

MO:

I wouldn’t waste any money on Cook or a running back, personally. Instead, I’d take that cap space and commit all-in at either offensive tackle or wide receiver on the trade market.

The O-tackles have been downright bad in training camp — outside of second-year prospect Max Mitchell. To me, that’s the biggest concern heading into the 2023 season.

At the same time, it’s unlikely that you find OT help at this stage of the summer and the next best thing is more weapons. That’s why I’d consider upgrading on Corey Davis via trade.

It’s a bit unfair to Davis to cut him this late, but the Jets may only get one or two chances at winning a Super Bowl with Rodgers and they can’t waste them. Call the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and see what it would take to land Mike Evansor Chris Godwin. Hell, I’d even check in on Davante Adams.

I’m not sure if there’s an upgrade to be had around the league, but you can still free up $10.5 million by releasing Davis if you’re able to find one. That, plus the Rodgers money, should be enough to bring in another star.

4. Kwon Alexander has officially signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Should the Jets start Jamien Sherwood at strongside linebacker in 2023, or pursue a different veteran in place of Alexander?

BG:

That feeds into my last answer. I’m fine with Sherwood filling the Alexander role from last season — which featured him playing in 49 percent of the defensive snaps. I’m not as high on Sherwood as some other people, but I’m cool with him being the guy.

Having said that, I do want more depth just in case. The Jets are entering an all-in season and you can’t get complacent with roster construction. You have to keep trying to improve other parts of the initial 53 and linebacker is a position I’d pursue.

I love Deion Jones, plus he has a connection to several members of the coaching staff and could be had dirt cheap. Give me that athletic piece of clay and let Robert Saleh wave his magic wand and turn him into a star.

MO:

Boy Green nailed it here. It’s less about Sherwood starting and more about what’s behind him — and Mosley/Quincy Williams — should injuries occur.

If you don’t sign a starting candidate like Myles Jack, Rashaan Evans or Anthony Barr, how about at least upgrading on Hamsah Nasirildeen and the fourth linebacker role? Rookie Zaire Barnes should factor into that competition too, but I’d prefer a more versatile veteran joining the group.

The Jets had Marcell Harris in this role last year, and he ended up being useful. Another affordable option could be someone like Nick Vigil or Jayon Brown.

The Latest on Mekhi Becton’s Future With the Jets

5. The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt reported that Mekhi Becton is still “a ways away” from pushing for a starting job in 2023. Is the former first-round pick on the roster at the start of the season?

BG:

Absolutely. This is an all-in-season, and I’d rather have him than not because who knows what can happen with injuries.

As long as he’s a good trooper and doesn’t throw a temper tantrum if he isn’t starting, then I don’t see why you wouldn’t keep him. This Thursday’s preseason game will be a huge measuring stick to see how far Becton has come this offseason and I’m excited to see it.

MO:

I agree with my partner, but my issue is that all signs tell us Becton will NOT be a faithful trooper if he’s denied a starting gig. He has delusions of grandeur despite not being even remotely close to the same player since his rookie campaign.

The Jets would probably love to keep him as an insurance policy for Duane Brown, but Becton has zero interest in being a backup. As we’ve seen with Elijah Moore and Denzel Mims, this Jets front office has no problem trading away talent that’s disgruntled.

Becton may never regain his first-round ability, but that first-round ego has remained.

  • Sauce Gardner was in position downfield on an incomplete deep ball from Rodgers to Lazard;
  • Randall Cobb had his first catch of camp from Rodgers;
  • Will McDonald got past Mekhi Becton on a speed rush in team drills but Becton also had plenty of wins in a good matchup between the pair;
  • Izzy Abanikanda had a long run with the second unit, while Knight was impressing with the ones. Abanikanda also lost a fumble;
  • A drive the field period for the first team offense ended when Tony Adams made a leaping interception following an incompletion and a false start; and
  • Practice ended when Rodgers hit Lazard on a crosser for a touchdown in red zone work. Rodgers still ended up completing less than half of his pass attempts though.

"As we’ve seen with Elijah Moore and Denzel Mims, this Jets front office has no problem trading away talent that’s disgruntled."

That right there has become a point of concern for me. It's not just that they have no problem trading away talent, but they seem to alienate the players and mistreat them, the second they voice a complaint. Just seems like they are being extremely petty and vindictive and that is no way to run a team or handle talent.

I'm mulling over what you said. I don't know enough about the Elijah Moore situation to comment. But I feel like there's a lot more to it than what we know.

Regarding Mims, he requested a trade and felt he was underutilized. Personally, his numbers didn't warrant any such promotion. So I don't think he fits into your narrative.

Seems like with Moore, after his situation the team just moved away from him.

With Mims, they came in (specifically LaFleur) and decided if he wasn't going to play ST that he wasn't going to play.

Both situations, just seems like LaFleur and Co. made a concerted effort to move away from the player and ostracize them.

Maybe there is more to it that we didn't see, but from what was seen, just seems like the CS actively did things that were vindictive and spiteful towards those players.

I pretty much agree with what you wrote. But I think vindictive and spiteful are extremely strong words.
Does CS = Coach Saleh?

It's something that I feel fell more on LaFleur. But we will see how they handle Becton who voiced some displeasure with how he was handled with his injury. If he is ditched without being given an opportunity, then it is a Saleh thing.

I believe, they felt Moore dogged quite a few of his routes. If the ball wasn’t heading his way he seemed not interested. I think that’s why he was traded.
Mims, he doesn’t have it between the ears, became a body catcher.
Brownlee has been written about constantly in this preseason. I’ve heard more about Jason Brownlee in 2 weeks, than I heard of Mims in 3 years. That’s why he’s gone.
Asking to be traded/malcontent just makes it that much easier.
