Is it time to cut bait with Jeremy Kerley?

Regardless of how you feel about him as a receiver, its clear the coaching staff has little use for him in the passing game and he's being used primarily as a returner. The numbers are crystal clear; yesterday he ran a grand total of ONE PLAY with the offense. Conversely Marshall ran 60, Decker 55, Owusu 40 and Enunwa 27.

You don't have to be Bill Walsh to see there is no roll for Kerley in this offense, therefore his only real value is as a returner, and to be perfectly honest, he's a subpar return man at best. IMO we'd be much better off with Walter Powell as the return man and the sixth WR on the depth chart. You can argue that Kerley is a better receiver, but I think most of us would agree that Powell looks like the more dynamic return man.

So if yesterday is indicative of Kerley's place in the WR pecking order, I would try to trade him for whatever we can get, even if its only a 7, and promote Walter Powell from the PS to be the primary return man.

I agree. He looks to have have fallen out of favour.

Wouldn't surprise me if teams are contacting us looking for a trade...

The age old question is what are the cap implications? He just signed a significant contract, so the hit may be a little rough. I agree that he is clearly an afterthought in Gailey's offense and will only get worse once Devin Smith is fully healthy, but he is decent insurance and by all accounts a good locker room guy. Tough one.

I've been advocating this all off season after the draft. The Jets are loaded at WR especially at the slot. The other WR have more to offer than Jeremy:

Owusu-Speed-Atheletisim.

Enunwa-Great blocking Skills

Devin Smith-Lightning Speed that can make acrobatic catches.

I dont think Kerely did anything wrong to piss off the coaching staff or management. It's just that there are better players at his position. He's been ok in the past but never a guy who would make your jaw drop.

If we can garner a 5th for him, why not. It free's up a little bit of cap space to lock up Big Mo.

I don't think we have the cap space to cut him. It would accelerate the cap hit by $3 to $4 million this year and we do not have the space to do that. Either we find a trading partner, or he is likely to be on the roster for the remainder of the season. You have to wonder, though, if he will even be active when Devin Smith comes back--if we have someone else to return punts.

The Jets keep Kerley for insurance. But if some other team's receiving corps gets decimated by injuries, there could be a trade out there...

Getting rid of Kerley makes no sense whatsoever. That would be just another talented receiver that the Jets just suddenly decided to get rid of.

Is he in a contract dispute? Has he been a bust and subpar at his job altogether?

The answer to both questions is NO. I would NEVER support getting rid of Kerley. He's another good example of homegrown talent and he WILL ultimately become quite useful for the CS, he's just in their dog house right now.

Why get rid of depth if it won't make your team better?
We dumped Cotch for Kerley and he has been a valuable cog for Pitt and Carolina, let's not do the same again

I wouldn't actively look to get rid of him; especially given that we have a bad history with WR injuries. That said, if a good offer of a fourth round pick or higher comes along. I wouldn't be against looking to deal him.

BTW... Are there any former NJ.com forum posters on here? I believe that may be my old buddy MarkGast from there.

I recall Cotch asking to be released. He dropped down on the depth chart with the addition of Holmes and B.E. Kerley is good for depth since we're playing the bigger receivers first. That helps the QB when he has taller targets to throw to.

He has been pretty decent for the Jets. Devin is just starting to come back and Owusu will have another concussion. Need depth to make it through a long season.

Trade him to the Cowboys for whatever you can get.... With Dez being out the next 4-6 weeks I'm sure they can use a guy like Kereley

I feel the same way about Kerley however trades during the season are rare

You don't skate on the edge by trading depth. You can never have enough depth and you won't get much in a trade so its not worth a 5th or later pick.

Cotchery looked good for the Panthers yesterday with some crucial catches.

There's a lot of guys like kerley around the league, nobody is going to take his contract. If we would have to eat money on a trade regardless then it completely makes no sense.

We don't know what we have in smith yet, kerley is a clutch possession receiver who plays with passion. It would be rash to trade him for a low pick that may likely get cut in camp.
