Is Perriman the new top dog at WR?

Yeah, I posted that in the combine thread. Ravens, Cleveland, and Vikings are licking their chops.

It's interesting the smallest 1st Rd wr target may be the first one off the board (Cooper) letting all the 6'2-6'6 WRS slide down the board.

This is exactly the type of player teams get burned by in the draft. An edge of the 1st round to mid 2nd round guy suddenly runs a super fast 40 and he shoots up the board. I really don't get why teams are so obsessed with 40 times even for WRs.

He was always going to be good, like Moncreif last year.

Perriman was already a top 2-3 route runner in this draft and one of the more polished wr prospects of the last couple years. He's a pro's pro like Beckham last year coming from a strong family. Many of us have been excited about him for months, I don't think he's as much of a late riser as you think.

I called him a steal of the draft in January and PD pointed out Kiper has had him as a fringe rd 1 player from the start. Going from fring Rd 1 to lock rd1 isn't a huge jump, IMO.

I agree with this, as some really good talent at WR will be there at #37 . The element that we are missing right now is a guy that can take the top off the offense, and a guy who fits that description that will be there IMO is Devin Smith.

i respect your opinion and personally know next to nothing about him. but the link above mentions the following:

Is Perriman a sure-fire first-round pick now? Well, some have said he was the third-most reliable receiver on his team last year behind J.J. Worton and Speedy Hall, and Perriman too often dropped key passes. His routes need work, and some coach might pull his hair out trying to squeeze the best out of Perriman in the NFL.

But we know that the first- and second-round buzz that has surrounded Perriman has been legitimate from a physical standpoint. And after he was held out of running at the Indianapolis scouting combine, we now have evidence of why that buzz is out there.

so i'll defer to those who know him more and have watched him play. but personally, i get weary of guys who are just speed guys and need work running routes and have problems with drops. a certain stephen hill comes to mind. note - i am NOT comparing the two necessarily. i readily admit i don't know much about perriman.

Perriman won't be there Rd 2 anymore. He's as likely to go Rd 2 as Parker, i.e. not very likely.

Sorry, one name to maybe add as Perriman rises is Strong falling. STRONG, LIKE Alston Jeffrey, has Incredible Hulk hands that catches everything that touches them, but isn't fast as other prospects.

Guys like Jeffrey, Marshall and Boldin may not be the fastest around but their ability to make the difficult catch is so key. QBs, particularly young QBs need guys like that. If Strong fits that mold, then you have to consider the value at #37 . My only hesitation would be having a guy who provides a little variety from a skillset standpoint in your receiving corps.

All fair statements. If you Google him, Perriman does have a lot of work to do to display Consistency in his route runnjng, however, one key element he added to his game last year was varying his speed while running routes. It is something he has become very good at. He also has a natural ability to use his big frame to shield defenders. As Greg Cosell said, he has all the strengths and weaknesses of Julio Jones when he came out. If Cosell watches his game on tape and sees Julio Jones (last year it was Moncreif looking like Josh Gordon on tape)...then I have a lot of confidence in him as a prospect.

A few points:

*I agree with Hobson that I am skeptical of the guys who are not great route runners, because the NFL is full of great athletes and it seems the best technicians (Rice, Carter, Boldin, Largent, etc) are the ones who become the best players. Conversely, the guys who are just amazing athletes but sloppy tent to flame out. Anyone remember Reggie Williams coming out of Udub?

*If Perriman jumps up the board and some team can't resist his potential, it just pushes another option down to us at 37.

*Jalen Strong is a fantastic football player. As mentioned above, he may have the strongest hands in the draft. He did run a sub 4.5 at 6'2 210 so he's not exactly slow for his size. Would be a nice pick up if he's sitting there at 37. The other thought is he does well a lot of what Marshall and Decker already do, so that should be considered as well.

*Give credit to Superman55 and Mel Kiper both on Breshad Perriman. Months ago 55 was touting him on this board and about the same time Kiper had him going #15 in his first mock. Both guys were on top of this kid's potential before most anyone else.

*lastly, I agree above that the best play is going defense (OLB) with our first pick and then picking up the offensive talent in subsequent rounds. The draft will go 3-4 rounds deep with top WR's, impact RB's, and a developmental QB. What order those guys get picked, I'm not sure. But I would expect those are the 3 main targets, along with maybe OT.

Breshad Perriman 6'2"/214 ran a 4.52 earlier this year ? Run the players @ the combines in full pads and lets see what they run ? Perriman will go in the 2nd round. The top 3 WR's off the board will be:
1) Amari Cooper 6'1"/210
2) Kevin White 6'3"/210
3) DeVante Parker 6'3"/209

With Perriman I would say ..... remember Stephen Hill .... !

Nothing alike. Stephen Hill transitioned to football from soccer and only caught something like less than 50 total balls in college. Perriman's father was in the NFL as a WR and he's played football his entire life. That's like comparing Ducasse to Zachary Martin as draft prospects...

I made this comment over and over again last year.... and for the record I was happy with the Shaq Evans, Enuwa picks later in the draft but 2 guys that I had as sleepers with big upside... Got burned on that theory.... We need to get one of the top flight WR's this year.... can not pass on Cooper, White or Parker.... I think the defense is built to win now... The offense needs as many weapons as possible to make the game easier for Geno and Fitz whoever the starter is.

I could see someone taking a run at Perriman in the late first, a playoff team wooed by his physical attributes. But he does run the risk of the DHB syndrome, great physical stats, but it's a chance taking him in the first.

We need another WR? I feel more comfortable with Decker and Marshall than I do with Pace and Coples...if you asking me which pair scares you as least likely to deliver what the team needs to be successful, I'd fear Pace/Coples pass rush falls flat over Decker and Marshall's game falling off. I don't see how WR can be seen as a bigger need than OLB...

This crop of WRs once again is excellent and deep as hell. Maybe not as much as last year but pretty damn close. We are good at WR now but of course need that beast rookie WR that can take over for Marshall in 2-3 years. So the Jets do need to draft one but not in the first round. I won't be upset if they draft Cooper, White or Parker but they can draft in the 2nd and 3rd round (most likely). The game of football has changed so much that WR have become a focus because QBs and the passing game are the focus. WRs are being breed like cattle by the dozens to being elite from HS through college and now to the NFL. So IMHO, the Jets should draft LB at #6 , WR or o-line in the 2nd or 3rd (either way). RB in the 4th and best player available in the 7th.
