MOBILE, Ala. — The Jets on Tuesday made it official: Chan Gailey has been hired as the team's offensive coordinator.

Gailey, the former Cowboys, Georgia Tech, and Bills head coach, had been pegged several days ago as the guy head coach Todd Bowles wanted for the job. On Monday, word trickled out that Gailey's hire was not a certainty. But then Gailey told NJ Advance Media's Darryl Slater he wanted the job but that the two sides were still negotiating.

Now it's a done deal.

Gailey also told Slater he didn't have much to say about quarterback Geno Smith, though he added he would "do what's best for the personnel that we have." Gailey's also been out of coaching since being fired by the Bills after the 2012 season, but he doesn't think that will hamper his ability to succeed as a coordinator.

Bowles was hired last week along with general manager Mike Maccagnan. The two are expected to meet the media on Wednesday. Bowles is also targeting former Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers as his defensive coordinator.

Here are 10 things you need to know about Chan Gailey.

The Jets announced Wednesday that they have hired Chan Gailey to be the club's offensive coordinator.

One day after talks between the two sides reportedly were at an impasse, the Jets made it official late Tuesday, announcing Gailey as the first hire on Todd Bowles' coaching staff.

Gailey, 63, was the odds-on favorite to land the job, and it was widely reported last week that a deal was imminent. But there was a report over the weekend that the Jets were cooling on Gailey, who Monday told ESPN that "everybody made it seem like a done deal -- everybody except me. ... Nothing's happened yet."

The Jets hammered out a deal on the eve of Bowles' introductory news conference. Bowles and new general manager Mike Maccagnan will meet the media at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Gailey becomes the Jets' fourth offensive coordinator in the last five years. He replaces Marty Mornhinweg, who held the position for two years under Rex Ryan.

After two years out of football, Gailey inherits a unit that finished 28th in scoring and 22nd in yards. His No. 1 responsibility will be trying to fix the turnover-prone Geno Smith, who has 34 interceptions in 29 career starts.

Gailey last coached with the Buffalo Bills, from 2010 to 2012. He was fired after compiling a 16-32 record. Before that, he was a head coach at Georgia Tech (44-32) and the Dallas Cowboys (18-14).

This will be his fifth job as an offensive coordinator. Previously, he worked for the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos.

Gailey has never worked with Bowles, but they got acquainted last year when Bowles reached out while he was interviewing for head-coaching jobs. They re-connected again recently, when Bowles became a hot head-coaching candidate.

I wanted Gase, but I'm fine with Gailey, its the OC Bowles wanted and he should have the right to pick his own staff.

Agreed. Gase is a NJ native so I kinda thought it was a given. The media made it seem as though Gailey turned down the job or wasn't in the picture.

Here are highlights of Gailey's work over the years:

Jets Make 8: Having called coaching his profession for nearly four decades, he has worked for seven pro teams in two different leagues — Denver, Pittsburgh, Miami, Kansas City, Dallas and Buffalo in the NFL and the Birmingham Fire in the World League.

Two Stints as an NFL Head Coach: In both of his seasons at the helm in Dallas (1998-99), Gailey guided the Cowboys to the postseason. With the Bills in 2010-12, his teams posted a 16-32 record.

Four Turns as O-Coordinator: Gailey has previously held the position of NFL offensive coordinator with four clubs: under Dan Reeves on the Broncos (1989-90), Bill Cowher on the Steelers (1997), Dave Wannstedt on the Dolphins (2000-01), and Herm Edwards on the Chiefs (2008).

Rush Top 10: A Gailey-led offense has finished in the NFL's top 10 in rushing five times, most recently in 2012 when the Bills finished sixth, led by RB C.J. Spiller’s 1,244 yards and six touchdowns.

Leader of 3 College Teams: Hired by Georgia Tech in 2002, Gailey compiled a 37-27 record with the Yellow Jackets over five seasons. He also led Troy State to a 12-1 record in 1984 en route to the NCAA Division II championship and guided Samford in 1993.

Gators QB: An Americus, GA, native, Gailey played three years at QB for the University of Florida in Gainesville. After lining up at signalcaller from 1971-73, he started his coaching career as a UF grad
