This makes all the sense in the world to me. The tag allows the Jets to keep him at a reasonable price for next year no matter what, and they can continue to work toward a long-term deal that works for everyone. If he starts to show signs of age in 2021 or a younger S steps up, the Jets aren't tied down to a long-term deal.

It is a common practice to tag a player while working out the details of a long-term contract, that is the most likely scenario here imho.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that franchising Maye is a shitty idea. A deal should have already been worked out. Now Maye and his agent are pissed, and its just gonna cost more later. I’m starting to think JD is just like the Johnsons...... cheap ass fucks. All this does is alienate players ... look no further than Robbie Anderson

I agree. Maye has earned a new deal and the Jets can afford to give him one. Why they are considering the tag is a puzzle. MAYBE his agent has him asking for way too much money. We haven't heard anything about what he is asking so far so maybe that's the reason a deal hasn't gotten done. I'd guess he's worth around 13 per year. If he's asking like 15 then I would expect JD to say no way. Basically until I've heard both sides I am not going to criticize the Jets because the deal hasn't gotten done yet.

Marcus Maye's agent Erik Burkhardt is seeking $17 M annual for his client reason the Jets front office is quiet it is cheaper to tag him so there is no rush unless they are preparing one way to come up with a competitive offer or go a different direction

so being he is an older player he is going to want to bank out as the Jets are going try to get back end team friendly
4 year $56 M with $32 M gtd ($ 22 in first 2 years )
