Why is Woody even in these interviews. He should just hire a General Manager and let that person conduct the interviews. Woody needs to stay out of the process.

Couldn't agree more. Guess he's trying to show he knows football.

Woody! Go on vacation for 2 months, you can afford it

Out of the people listed Kubiak would be my choice...after Woody's press conference I have more faith in him...I still would rather Pep or another OC especially from a defensive HC

I wanted Pep too but it seems like he isn't even a consideration.

Yeah

The Good GM/HC's are still working. They don't want to spend time preparing for a 4 hour interview, because they are preparing for what makes them good HC's. Winning football games.

My real fear right now is that Woody is going to hire Marrone, because Casserly knows him, Woody knows him from when he was the Jets OL coach, and he is available right now because he blew the play offs by losing to the Raiders. Give him way more authority then then he should have, and force fit a GM, because of the Marrone hiring. Instead of waiting for a good, winning GM/HC.

This is a formula for disaster.

Where the Jets stand on head coach/GM searches

By Brian CostelloJanuary 5, 2015 | 11:53am

The Jets are a week into their search to find a new head coach and general manager. It has been a busy week since Woody Johnson fired Rex Ryan and John Idzik. Let’s take a look at where the Jets are in both searches.

Head coach

Already interviewed: Jets assistant head coach/running backs Anthony Lynn, Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Seahawks assistant head coach/offensive line Tom Cable and former Bills coach Doug Marrone

Scheduled to interview this week: Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich (on Wednesday) and Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles (date unknown)
Requested to interview: Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, who has indicated he does not want to interview until the Ravens’ season is over.

Notes: Quinn appears to be the most in-demand candidate this winter. He also interviewed with the Bills, 49ers, Falcons and Bears. But teams may have to wait awhile for him if the Seahawks advance to the Super Bowl again. Marrone is interviewing with the Falcons on Monday. He has also drawn interest from the Bears, who are focused on hiring a GM before a coach. Reich interviewed with the Bills on Sunday. Bowles is another hot candidate. The Falcons and Bears want to talk to him, too.

General manager

Already interviewed: Jets director of football administration Rod Graves, Browns executive chief of staff Bill Kuharich, Seahawks director of pro personnel Trent Kirchner, Eagles director of pro personnel Rick Mueller, Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan (occurring Monday)

Scheduled to interview this week: Dolphins director of college scouting Chris Grier
Requested to interview: Chiefs director of player personnel Chris Ballard and Saints director of player personnel Ryan Pace

Turned down opportunity to interview: Vikings assistant GM George Paton and Vikings assistant GM Eric DeCosta

Notes: It is interesting the Jets requested more interviews after their initial requests last week. That could indicate they were not enamored of any of the first batch of candidates. The Jets are pessimistic about Pace agreeing to an interview. NFL Network reported he is likely to pass and stay with New Orleans. Ballard is the favorite to land the Bears GM job. He is interviewing there before agreeing to talk to the Jets.

Doug Marrone is not exactly hot candidate, so Jets owner Woody Johnson should take his time

The two men Johnson picks to be the next coach and GM will define the franchise's next few seasons - and possible turnaround - so he'd better take his time and make sure he chooses wisely.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Published: Sunday, January 4, 2015, 11:06 PM Updated: Sunday, January 4, 2015, 11:33 PM A A A

No one seems to be in a rush to hire Doug Marrone, who walked out on the Bills, so the Jets shouldn't be either.

No one seems to be in a rush to hire Doug Marrone, who walked out on the Bills, so the Jets shouldn't be either.

Woody Johnson will have to sift through the egos, mirages and misdirection to find the best two-man team to lead his franchise back to relevance.

For all the recent discussion about the merits of hiring a general manager before a head coach or a head coach before a general manager, the Jets owner’s mission statement has been clear in the first week since John Idzik’s and Rex Ryan’s ousters: Find a partnership that makes the most sense to lift his team out of the cellar.

“That combination is the most underrated dynamic in the business,” a veteran front office executive said.

The Jets entered the search process hoping to first land a GM, but circumstance and competition might dictate a different path. The wisest course is to identify the front office man before the sideline man. Strong and successful head coaches sometimes warrant deviation from the blueprint, but there is no candidate right now who fits that profile.

Doug Marrone, the perceived front-runner, has no real market for his services.

The Falcons are slated to interview him Monday, but the Jets shouldn’t feel any sense of urgency to procure him. He’s not exactly the Falcons’ top choice, according to league sources. The Bears were reportedly interested, but seeing is believing there. Marrone isn’t scheduled for an interview in Chicago.

Memo to Woody Johnson: Marrone needs you. You don’t need him.

The Jets must maximize their chances of pairing two top-notch people with a shared team-building philosophy.

It should be an equal partnership. The Jets, like any team, run the risk of empowering a head coach if he is chosen before the GM.

Pete Carroll, who built a dynasty at USC, and Andy Reid, who went to five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl in Philly, made sense to bring into the fold before a GM was in place. Carroll’s and Reid’s resumes warranted the moves.

None in the current crop, including Marrone, falls into that category.

The Jets have interviewed Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable, Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn and Marrone for the head coaching gig.

Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich, who met with the Bills in San Diego on Sunday, is set to interview on Wednesday, according to a source. The Jets will interview Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, whose team was bounced from the playoffs, this week. They have requested an interview with Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, who has made it clear that he won’t take any interviews until his team is eliminated from the postseason.

The Jets were among four teams to interview Quinn over the weekend. Sources believe that Seattle personnel executive Trent Kirchner, who interviewed last weekend, would not be paired with Quinn, whose preference would be to work with a more seasoned front office man.

Former Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik, who spent 19 seasons in Tampa’s front office, has a history with Quinn. Dominik, an ESPN analyst, and Quinn became close during Quinn’s two-year run as the University of Florida defensive coordinator. A Quinn-Dominik partnership would make sense for the Jets.

The team has already identified a few GM candidates who have a history with Marrone.

Eagles pro personnel director Rick Mueller, who worked with Marrone in New Orleans for three seasons, interviewed with the Jets brain trust Sunday. Texans college scouting director Mike Maccagnan, who has a dual link with lead consultant Charley Casserly and Marrone, is scheduled to interview Monday. Saints director of player personnel Ryan Pace was also added to the Jets interview wish list.

A Kubiak-Maccagnan pairing (given their Houston ties) would fit the familiarity criteria, but the Jets should try to find the best people for the jobs.

“This is the ultimate team sport and the team has to be in the building as well,” Johnson said. “(The GM and head coach) have to understand each other as people.”

The Jets could use a creative and innovative offensive mind to groom a quarterback and lead them into the future, but there’s no denying Quinn has been the most sought- after candidate on the market to this point.

Teams have real, not perceived, interest in his services. He doesn’t need help to inflate his stock.

The Jets were impressed with Quinn’s interview, but are they willing to wait on him until Seattle’s playoff run is over? If so, who’s the best front office man to team with him?

There’s too much riding on these two hires for Johnson to cede to imaginary pressure from outside forces.

I'm not seeing the interest from the Jets perceptive for Quinn...the Jets need an offensive guru to build the offense not another defensive genius to keep down the same road

Chiefs, Saints execs decline Jets' GM interviews

Is this 2013 all over again?

The New York Jets were spurned Monday by two more potential general manager candidates, bringing the total to at least four. Kansas City Chiefs director of player personnel Chris Ballard and New Orleans Saints director of player personnel Ryan Pace declined invitations to interview for the job, it was confirmed. The NFL Network first reported them.

Previously, Baltimore Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta and Minnesota Vikings assistant GM George Paton said no to the Jets. All four are considered among this year's trendy GM candidates.

So what's going on here?

The uncertainty surrounding the Jets' power structure could be a contributing factor. The Jets are looking for a GM and a head coach, and they haven't defined the pecking order -- at least not publicly. It's possible they could first hire a coach, with that coach -- and the subsequent GM hire -- reporting directly to owner Woody Johnson. The conventional set up has the coach reporting to the GM. The Jets' plan of attack during the dual searches has created the perception that the GM will have a diminished role.

Obviously, other factors could be at play, too. For instance, DeCosta, the heir apparent to Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome, has declined many interview requests over the years. Ballard is interviewing for the Chicago Bears' GM vacancy -- he's a former Bears scout -- and he's considered the front-runner. Pace and Paton are said to be comfortable in their current jobs, but it seems odd they wouldn't even take the interview.

A similar situation unfolded in 2013, when the Jets were blown off by several candidates. In that case, though, the job wasn't deemed attractive because the coach (Rex Ryan) came with the gig. They ended up settling for John Idzik.

Right now, the Jets have six known candidates -- Trent Kirchner (Seattle Seahawks), Rod Graves (Jets), Bill Kuharich (Cleveland Browns), Rick Mueller (Philadelphia Eagles) and Mike Maccagnan (Houston Texans), who was scheduled to interview Monday. The sixth is Chris Grier (Miami Dolphins), who still hasn't met with the team.

Isn't the Jets putting themselves in tough spot interviewing HC's without a gm first. If I'm a HC do I really want a job where I don't know who is my boss yet and the owner seems determined to be very hands on?

I think we've entered a stage in professional football where the head coach is the boss, and the GM is the employee.

Coaches now make way more money than GMs, that's all you need to know.
