Jets Looking to Move on From Geno

i didn't deny that fitz had better weapons than geno. my post was more to dispel the doom and gloom suggestion that fitz can't stretch the field. with comparable weapons at his disposal with the jets, there's no reason to think he can't successfully throw the ball downfield.

and yes, geno was handicapped to some degree by the mediocre WR corps. but those numbers i posted above are pretty atrocious. can't place all the blame on the WRs. a 16.6% completion percent and 6 Ints to 2 TDs on passes traveling 21-30 yards is awful.

How does it compare to Tom Brady's numbers when throwing the same distance?

Also, I tried to give you credit for that point when I said I agreed with your last point on the WRs.

the sooner he is gone the better. If he did say I believe gailey could make him serviceable but he is no where near a franchise qb.

I put little weight into beat reporters who write "the locker room isn't behind Geno...they've lost faith in Geno...the silence speaks volumes.."

Sounds like an awful lot of reading between the lines as opposed to factual reality. There's been an awful lot of speculation around here, too, because nobody knows any consensus opinion about Geno Smith regarding the players or the fans. This board represents about 1/500 of the Jets entire fan base.

Point being, Geno is coming back sometime around weeks 4-7. It's not that bad of a situation when you think about it. Fitz gets his shot to take the reins and lead this team, and if we're 2-5 when Geno comes back, he's ready to step in and give it his last shot as a Jet. This Bryce Petty talk is silly though. He only sees the field if the Jets hit rock bottom after Thanksgiving, IMO

agreed. At this point, we dont know how or when Geno will be healed. Just hang onto your hat, root for Fitz, and hope he gets us off to a good start so its a tough decision. Geno isn't healthy enough to play, so no point in slinging shit back and forth right now. We're going with Fitz no matter what the next couple weeks, lets just see how it plays out.

I'll tell you we don't agree all the time but I have to give you credit, this is logical and supportive of the team...good post.

Not sure this is accurate or inaccurate but you have to wonder why no one tried to stop both guys? Maybe there is a general lack of leadership on the team and that maybe the biggest issue we face.... remember Parcells always had someone to maintain order and focus in the locker room, where is that guy or guys?????

I think it's pretty simple really

QB going into TC was clearly our biggest stumbling block. Firstly, Rodgers, Brady, Peyton, Brees or Manning are NOT walking in the door. Geno is awful and will always be, Ryan is limited but experienced and can hold the fort, Bryce is raw but has potential to learn and develop and Heaps is a PS guy at best.

Now with Geno gone, Ryan gives the team the best chance to win in 2015 and hopefully Bryce can compete for the starting job in 2016.

We will add a veteran late cut to provide insurance and go into the season far better IMO than the past two or what might have been if Gailey's May announcement had come to fruition

agreed. We haven't had any leaders in a while. Who was the leader before? Bart Scott? Tony Richardson? LT?
We need those type of players.

Where is David Harris then? He is a vet, who just got paid. Where is Nick "unbridled love" Mangold? D'Brick? Mo Wilk? Gulp, Revis?

These are all vets.

My opinion (which is worthless) is that Geno is a lost cause to these guys. They are going to do it themselves.

You can't be taught how to gain respect and lead, you have to do it yourself. Geno is and was a lost cause. I feel the D is going in with the challange limit teams to 17 or less and roll with it. O-line challenging themselves to keep Geno up. The team a a whole hopes they don't stick with Geno too long. No one on here has an view into the locker room. No one knows the dynamics, pecking order, etc. The way I see it, a 3 year starting QB in this league is a vet, should be a leader, and I'm sorry, it is time for everyone to take the kids gloves off and let him be who is is supposed to be. Guess what, he failed miserably.

What is the line on if Geno had more than $600 in his wallet the day he was punched? I'd like to bet on the over

It's not easy for these guys to compete and do their job and juggle family life. Who has time for two middle school minds in the locker room.

There's no reason to blame the leadership on this team for the assault. You need to blame the lack of leadership of the two idiots involved. Period.

Who knows who was there, or when it happened. Players could have still been on the field, in a positional group meeting or even taking a bloody dump. All serious NFL sources are saying a confrontation like this is something they haven't seen in their careers.

Let's put it on a meathead with a short fuse, who hit another meathead who was too stupid to realize that provoking a teammate is something a QB who is a leader shouldnt do.

Two morons. As simple as that

Darrelle Revis and Nick Mangold, D'Brick come to mind as leaders. They all do their job and always put the work in.

However, in this case, I just think Geno Smith cannot be repaired. He's a POS and that's all there is to it. Some people cannot be helped even with the best leaders showing him the way.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is now the #1 QB on the Jets. This situation, reminds me somewhat of the 1979 Jets QB situation. Richard Todd was the #1 QB in 1978 when he separated his shoulder in a game mid-season. Matt Robinson, his back up, played most of the remainder of the season (Todd came back for 1 game and re-injured the same shoulder) and did quite well. In the 1979 TC Jets HC Walt Michaels decided to have a QB competition in which Matt Robinson won the starting job. The night prior to the opening game of the season Robinson arm wrestled another player and injured his thumb thus playing a poor game with a heavily taped hand. Robinson couldn't grip the ball well and threw multiple interceptions including a killer in OT resulting in a Jets loss. Robinson, at first, covered up how he injured his thumb but Michaels found out the truth. Michaels then named Todd the starting QB and Robinson never got the job back even when his thumb healed and he was 100%. Apparently Micheals lost all confidence in Robinson because a QB has to be leader and act as such. I believe the same situation exists this year. Fitzpatrick may not be as physically gifted as Smith but he is a real professional and conducts himself as such. IMO, Smith is going to have a difficult time getting back on the field as a starting QB.

Mehta reporting locker room sources that geno"deserved it", which was my hunch since the finger pointing and lack of teammates public outrage. Looks like geno not only isn't a leader, but his teammates thought he needed to be punched.
As much as we try to predict relationships and success, there's a ton we will never know about our favorite players.

This whole thing triggered memories of claims by former team mates and HC about a "lack of leadership" "in a bad way" existing at UWV under Geno's watch. Was easy to dismiss when he was drafted but now I'm not so sure...

Thank You jetkwondo. I tried to find an article on this, as I remembered it from when it happened. Didn't want to make a post about it with out the link.

Geno Smith’s former teammates, coach lament lack of leadership in 2012

In the weeks preceding the 2013 draft, plenty of anonymous sources gave damning assessments of former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. Now, folks are firing shots at Smith with their names attached. Even if they aren’t mentioning his name.

Despite speaking in generalities, the message from both former teammates and Smith’s head coach in Morgantown is clear.

It started last week during a press conference. Per Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com), Holgorsen talked about leadership. Or, more accurately, the lack of it.

“We have to develop leaders,” Holgorsen said. “It was a big issue on last year’s team — in a bad way.”

Again, Smith’s name wasn’t uttered. But if the quarterback who came out of the gates with eye-popping stats and Heisman hype wasn’t in a position to lead, who was?

Some players have echoed Holgorsen’s remarks, also without mentioning Smith by name.

“Last year we didn’t have, you know, a lot of leadership,” running back Dustin Garrison said.

“I feel like last year, we fell apart,” running back Andrew Buie said. “At certain moments where we needed to be a team, we weren’t a team. So that was a big thing that [Holgorsen] preached all offseason: Team. Team. Team. I honestly feel like as a whole team offensively, defensively and with special teams, we’re more of a unit as a team. More together.”

“What’s different this year is we’re more a team,” offensive lineman Quinton Spain said. “There ain’t no I’s; we don’t depend on nobody. We just depend on all of us at once as a team. So I think this year will be better than last year.

“There wasn’t no team. I could say there was a team early, but once we started losing we saw the I’s come up, so it just hurt the team worse.”

“I just feel like across the board there’s no one person on the team who stands out more than any other,” defensive tackle Will Clarke said. “There’s not one person who’s getting a lot more media coverage or this much attention from certain national attention than the rest of us. We’re all pretty much on the same level. We’re all using that to try to just work together.”

The three players who got the national attention last year were Smith first, then receiver Tavon Austin, followed by receiver Stedman Bailey. And while each arguably shares responsibility for the lack of leadership, the quarterback at every level is the primary leader of a team.

For the Rams, it’s not much of an issue; no one expects Austin and Bailey to become leaders, especially not right away. But if Smith becomes the starter in New York as a rookie, he needs to become a leader sooner rather than later.

If he couldn’t or wouldn’t do it at Morgantown, it’ll be even harder in the NFL.
