I've heard that he has the frame to get up to 250 pounds. Also, I'm not so sure he's that much smaller than Erin Henderson.

He is the same size as Jon Vilma. The more I researched the Lee pick the more I like it. He is really fast and he doesn't shy away from contact. He is not a game changer year one, but a pretty important piece to overhauling the speed at LB.

Mac drafted a Safety that he plans on playing at LB in a 3-4 formation. God, you just can't make this sh*t up. They CLAIM he'll be covering Gronk. HA HA HA HA He'll get eaten alive. Mark my words, he will NEVEER be able to cover Gronk. NEVER.

Bowles wanted a Deone Buchanan type and he got bigger, faster version. Buchanan has been making so many plays for the Cards. This pick is growing on me.

Yeah he has been good but I would not say great. I am not sold on Lee but I don't watch college. I do trust BA & wanted speed at LB so I am happy on that.

As far as Gronk he is not superman.

When we drafted Vilma we were a base 4-3 team under Herm, so it was a good pick when we made it and he was promptly named DROY. When Mangini came in and switched to a base 3-4, Vilma's play suffered badly and soon he was shipped off to the Saints for a 4th RD Pick, where he once again excelled in the 4-3.

Do you not think TB knows what he is drafting??? Mangini came in with a guy who didn't fit. Lee was drafted by TB because he thinks he can use him in different ways. Vilma's short comings should not dictate what Lee's potential is.

from kiper's day 1 winners and losers:

. ... Darron Lee at No. 20 is a great value for the Jets, and he's exactly the kind of player they were looking for. He ended up No. 15 on my Big Board.

Cy would be so proud of you quoting Kiper! LOL

People here are complaining about his size, but you won't find many 6'4" 260-270lb LB's running a 4.43 40 time. Can't have both most of the time. And you can't teach speed.

for too ling, we've talked about how slow and plodding our LBs are. and now we draft a guy with great athleticism and can play sideline-to-sideline and the arm chair coaches here think they know who is a better fit for bowles' system than bowles. people get too stuck on 3-4/4-3 terms. bowles runs multiple schemes and talks about how the nickle is almost his base defense. we just added a talented and productive fast LBer, and while i too grant he seems slightly undersized, i'm not gonna get hung up on a few pounds and an inch or 2. i'll judge the pick on how he does on the field, and it will be up to bowles and the coaches to put him in position to succeed.

Great post. Nailed it.

Honest to God, thats the one sliver of hope I have for this pick, that although it seems like a bad scheme fit on the surface, Bowles has a plan that is outside the box, so its not really what it appears to be.

That said, I was a little put off by his reluctance to switch to a base 4-3 in his post draft press conference last year, after we drafted Leonard Williams and it was clear that we had four terrific DL's we need to get on the field simultaneously. He went to such an extreme to preserve his precious 3-4 that his solution was to move Sheldon Richardson to OLB. Really????

And now, despite Lee "seemingly" being a much better fit at 4-3 OLB and still having better personnel for the 4-3 overall, he would rather move this kid to ILB than change his base defense. I understand that Bowles is a terrific defensive coach, he forgot more about football than I will ever know, so I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and I DO, but normally the best coaches adapt to their personnel and I don't see much flexibility from Bowles in that regard. IMO switching to a base 4-3 after we drafted LW was a no brainer. Frankly I was shocked when Bowles quickly shot down the idea the night we drafted Williams. When we picked Williams that night, damn near all of us automatically assumed that signaled a switch to the 4-3, because we had four blue-chip D-linemen.

I just saw an interview he did with a retired Steelers CB on the NFLN and he looked small standing next to a Corner!

He was taller than Maurice Jones Drew (who isn't?), but he looked skinny compared to Drew!

HOW THE **** is this guy going to play inside linebacker or any linebacker in the 3-4 scheme?

From what I'm seeing he will be playing the Deone Buchannon role for us. I've never been a fan of the 'tweener type, but Buchannon worked for Bowles on AZ. I have to assume they know what they are doing with this guy. Having oru big fatties up front will also be a huge help to him.

We're getting too caught up with size, IMO. Just watch the game tape. Lee blows people up and gets to the ball faster than anyone. Bowles was absolutley giddy in the war room talking on the phone. He got the player he wanted for this defense.

this is the best post I've read about Lee. The NFL has changed. You need to keep up with the spread offenses and have speed at linebacker. People were clamoring for us to select Jaylon Smith if he was healthy and Myles Jack but Lee is bigger than both. No one said that they were undersized.

This isn't your father's NFL anymore. People are spreading the field, throw quick slants and run hurry ups. The big linebackers will be too big to play if the trend continues. I have my faith in Bowles and Mac. I am skeptical but I trust them more than I trust myself.

The analysts were saying how Bowles had a player of similar build in Buchanon in AZ. Reviewing his play will give us a better understanding on how Lee will be used. @butterscotch , how was Buchannon for you guys?

Ok lets take a look at a few things .

Buchannon plays inside now but started out as a dollar LB under TB so when some say Lee cannot plays inside it may not be true.

He (Bucannon) has added weight this year because some including me thought he might be overpowered at times. On the inside you need that weight. So from 210 to 222 at this point. The Jets need speed so it will be interesting to see what they do with Lees weight. Most guys from college need more muscle so his weight may go up some in that area. Also as he ages the weight may go up.

Good short read....

Deone Bucannon added weight to play in 2016

As far as Lee I have not seen him play in School so it could be a good pick? Will it be worth a one? Time will tell. I see him as a second or third rounder because of the time I think he will be playing on the field. Lets trust for now!

WE STILL NEED A QB

Bingo.

I just don't understand all the drama about his size.

He's 21 YO. He will naturally gain weight. Here's some prototypical ILB'er from NFL.com

Ray Lewis: 6'1" 240

Sean Weatherspoon: 6'2" 240

Patrick Willis 6'1" 242

All a bit heavier then Lee, but not dramatic, and Lee will be in their weight area very shortly after a season in an NFL weight program.

A lot of drama about nothing. Lee will make the Jets D better. Personally I would have preferrd Spence, but I suspect Macc has a bit more knowledge of these players then I do

Bottom line is Bowles said in the presser... We have the big guys upfront.... the game is spread out and we need speed at LB and he is a 3 down player not a specialty guy who you hope develops to a 3 down backer....

Bowles got an ingredient for his defense that he wanted, he needed and combined with mauldin gives him the players on the field to fit his scheme.
