Jets should sign Karlos Williams

Two days ago he was released by the Bills because he was overweight and on a four game suspension for substance abuse.

Then why the heck should we want him?

Because he's 23 years old, immensely talented, awesome size/speed ratio when he's in shape, we desperately need another quality NFL RB on the roster, and we have six weeks to whip him into shape before he can suit up for a game.

Also, because he starts the season on suspension, he doesn't take up a roster spot for the first month of the season, you get a roster exemption for suspended players.

So basically we can start the season with three RB's (Forte, Powell, Khiry), four if we want to carry Seastruck, and that gives us a month to see what we have in Karlos Williams. Maybe this was a wake-up call and it scared him straight. If so and he works hard and gets into shape during his suspension, then we add a terrific young RB at the quarter pole. If not, then we release him at what will probably be very little cost. The possible upside far outweighs the downside. This kid averaged 5.6 YPC for the Bills last year and tied an NFL record by scoring TD's in his first six games as a pro. When he's right, he has starting tailback ability. He's 6' 1"/230 and he ran a 4.48 at the combines. This kid is no joke.

Depends on when the official release paperwork is sent into the NFL office and not when it is publicly announced..... Could be a day or 2 delay before it's officially sent into the league office....

But I agree we should sign him if he clears/ed waivers....

He was released on the 20th and now Wikipedia is listing him as a free agent, but that could be wrong.

If he can't play for coach cupcake, who runs such a player friendly system, I doubt he fits anywhere there is accountability.

We should do this before somebody else does it, this kid is ridiculously talented. If he screws up we cut him, no big deal, its not like he's gonna get big money. Heck, while he's on suspension he doesn't even take up a roster spot. There's really nothing to lose here, but if he stays clean and gets in shape, we could be adding an immense talent at the RB position in week five. He wants to be here, IMO its stupid if we don't make this happen right away.

Free-agent RB Karlos Williams: 'I'd like to fly with the Jets, baby'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Former Buffalo Bills running back Karlos Williams, looking for a job, was so encouraged by his visit with the New York Jets this week that he decided to tell the world about it.

He posted a video, presumably on a friend's Twitter account, in which he detailed his two-day visit with the Jets, Tuesday and Wednesday. Williams didn't mention names, but he said he met with the general manager, personnel director, head of security and owner. He must have been mistaken because he didn't meet owner Woody Johnson, who wasn't in the building at the time of the visit. But he did, in fact, meet with the others.

"Talked good vibes," Williams said on the video. "Asked me a lot of combine [type] questions, obviously. Want to know my background and my people. No offer yet, but it was a good visit."

It's unusual for a player to be so public with this sort of thing, but he's obviously trying to promote himself. Williams needs to brush up on his geography, though.

"I love the city of Jersey," he said. "I love New York, love being close to the city. I'd like to fly with the Jets, baby."

With that, Williams extended his arms and made like a jet plane.

The Jets' interest is only preliminary at this point, so no deal is imminent. As a rookie for the Bills last season, Williams rushed for 517 yards and seven touchdowns. He also scored two receiving touchdowns. He landed in Bills coach Rex Ryan's doghouse by reporting to camp out of shape and he was waived last Saturday.

Jets coach Todd Bowles wasn't among those who met with Williams, but he said the visit went well.

"Obviously, he had issues in the past," Bowles said. "[The scouts] did their due diligence to work him out, and that's all they were trying to do."

It's up to him. He can demonstrate how badly he wants to be a Jet by making sure he's both clean and in shape. If he does that, he can be a force. If he doesn't, he's just another waste of talent.

Rex tried to stick it to us last year when he signed IK, but that was never gonna comeback to haunt us because he's a marginal talent at best. THIS, on the other hand, could really comeback to haunt Rex if this kid learned his lesson and gets into shape. This is the kind of player you really lament losing if he gets his act together.

The problem with that is, if you wait until he gets into shape and proves he can stay clean, you won't be the only team that wants to sign him. There's a distinct possibility that some other team beats you to the punch. NOW is the time to sign him, strike while the iron is not, and then, if it doesn't workout, you can cut him at minimal cost.

As Lou said, its low risk, high reward.
