Jets sign Stevan Ridley

At this stage in free agency, I don't think we're really bidding against many teams, right? Seriously, most staffs are working on finalizing the pieces to their draft doards. They're not in free agent bidding wars these days much I bet.

If he's here, the market is set, maybe a little more than vet min and an incentive based contract. I dont even think signing him would prevent you from drafting a back. Jets may feel like they need a lot of RB depth and may carry 4 on the active roster that looks like Ivory, Powell, Ridley, and a rookie. As long as it is a 1 year, low base salary, incentive based contract (i.e. pay by performance), I dont mind the signing. Pushes Powell for #2 spot and gives you a similar back up to Ivory if Ivory gets dinged. Also, allows you to be patient with young back as they learn pass blocking. It's a C grade addition.

Yeah, I'm very surprised the Jets are pursuing him. I would think a 3-down back is in order (and through the draft) unless they see Ridley as replacing Ivory for which you could save 2M in cap relief. Ridley doesn't catch the ball any better than Ivory and both aren't exactly great fits into Gailey's offense. I don't quite get this interest.

I could see the Jets drafting a smaller, quicker back in the middle rounds. Surprised they are looking at this route.

well considering ivory is not a great catching rb sometimes you don't need to be the fastest get this kid in on those short yard downs and he takes pressure off the qb. He doesn't need to be fast if you need 1-3 yards just need a guy to catch and not fall backward when tackled like CJ always did.

Neither is Ridley. Powell, can do everything you said above, plus Powell can block.

Ridley has some what the same skill set as Ivory, but no where as good. I really hope they don't sign him. Much rather have one of the 3rd down backs from the draft.

Ivory might be the most underrated player on the Jets. Let's grab a mid round scat back.

I agree.

When Idzik signed Ivory, I thought, Oh Boy this guy knows what he's doing Thank God.

It was all down hill from there

I second that. I think Ivory is one of the most underrated players in the league. I do think the addition of a back with some wiggle is critical. But I think drafting a 1b caliber back that is more than a 3rd down back isn't a bad idea. If we shuffled some picks to move up from 37 to get Gurley or gordon, I'd be excited as hell with that pick. Ivory and gurley? That's a show. But I would also be happy with a duke Johnson type.

I don't think any of you are taking into account Gailey's offense here. Doesn't he employ a one-back RB formation with that back being a competent receiver? That's consistent with everything I've read of his offenses. Hey, I love Ivory as much as anyone else but he can't catch the ball. Hands are made of stone and he's never been smooth in transition with catching and running. I'm just throwing that out there.

Ivory was brought in to be a slammer in a ground and pound power running offense for Rex. Is this what Gailey runs? Not that I'm aware of. So why is no one pointing out that Ivory is mis-cast in this offense? Just curious. Maybe I'm missing something. And this is why I find interest in Ridley so confusing. He's not far removed from Ivory by way of catches however that could've been skewed by Vereen's presence.

Beyond that, I see most of you interjecting that Gailey WILL use two backs as the common thinking is that we add a pass-receiving RB to complement Ivory. This assumes he will change his ideology and employ two-back sets. Where are you guys getting this from? Just asking. With that fundamental change, he'd be less able to spread the field which is what his philosophy is predicated upon. In any case, I think all of you are missing the boat here. Don't take it personally as I'm just disagreeing with everyone here on him.

I firmly believe Ivory's position is very tenuous and I could see the team could trade him on draft day and then save 1.5M against the cap. Maybe Ridley is being brought in to replace him as they add another through the draft. Ridley is a good back with low mileage yet coming off an injury.

Ridley can play. He had acl repair in Oct. it'll most likely take him until June-July to be close to 100%. You cannot ever have too much talent on a NFL roster. If the price is right-maybe a one year "show me deal", this would be a good move for depth and insurance.

RB is not one of our major need areas and it appears to me that there may be multiple teams interested and I certainly don't want to get trapped in a bidding war for a depth guy.

I agree. But just because he has visits with other teams does not mean there will be a bidding war. Could be his agent trying to drum up interest. Ridley can get tough yards, and has surprising burst. If the Jets sign him they don't have to pick a rb in the draft and can use the picks for ol , wr and lb talent. He's a sleeper free agent and he will play well at a huge discount.

I agree.

And hopefully run for or catch three touchdowns in each game vs the Cheaters and rub salt in the wounds of the filthy hoodie

Bad move in my opinion. There is more talent available in the draft.

I'm going to guess that it's a one year deal with little in the way of guarantees. It seems as if Macc is trying to aquire as much talent as possible prior to the draft so he can actually go BPA.

Good signing

Hope he runs for 3 TDS and catches 2 TD passes in each game vs the Cheating Scumbags
