Jets still have close to 50M in cap space

Which makes their apparent disinterest in Justin Houston even more inexplicable.

They can give Houston 2 years for 30M, 15M Per, and they'll still have 35M in cap space.

To be clear, it's a little over 47M in cap space and not counting Henry Anderson's contract, so it's closer to 40M or thereabouts.

But still, there's plenty of cap space (Courtesy of Anthony Barr) to sign Justin Houston.

Beautiful, more then enough to spend if needed as we get closer to the season and I'm sure they will spend some of it on more FAs. With this information, maybe they are looking to go with the draft to fill the gaps of what's left that's needed. The Jets still need a lot more at this point but building the rest from the draft isn't a bad idea at all.

To be fair , we don't know what the jet staff has in mind with that # 3 pick. If the plans are to go after an edge rusher ie OLB Josh Allen , signing Houston could be considered overkill , and an unnecessary waste of valuable cap money.

I really like the fact that we aren't just spending the entire 100 mil just because we have it. Nothing wrong with saving some for a time when the right o lineman becomes available. Although I hope we draft some o line

I'm thinking we didn't need Barr either. Especially if we draft defense at 3

My thinking is that , by going after Barr , and he is a relatively young player , they could have filled their needs for edge rusher , and traded down . The fact that Barr chose not to come here probably threw a monkey wrench in that plan , and could possibly have changed the whole thought process , IMHO.

I have a feeling they were planning on taking Quinnen Williams at #3 if he slid. Notice how quickly they re-signed 3-4 DE Henry Anderson after Barr backed out. Because Barr backing out obviously changed our plans. Now we don't have the luxury to take Q because we still need a 3-4 RUSH OLB, so it's Bosa or Allen in that order. In the event they go 1 and 2, I think we'll take Montez Sweat #3

However if we do trade down, I think its for Sweat, Brian Burns (both dynamic edge rushers) or LT Andre Dillard.

Rather than going for Houston, I wish they had sought out Morse or Paradis. I still think the line needs an upgrade at C. Edge rusher will likely be picked up in the draft.

hoping for a focus on OL in the next few days - and then again when solid players become available - not stars but adding a couple of solid OL - and generally grabbing their pick of the depth FA plays

I think we draft BPA, which could be Q. or we trade down and a trade down would require that we would be in position to get the best LT or center with the traded pick

They should sign Donald Penn who was just released by the raiders. Let him play RT until she’ll is healthy. Or see who’s better to start at LT between him and Beachum. Also he’s familiar and buddies with Kelechi. Would give us some options on the Oline.

I believe picking up Sullivan or Sitton finishes the o-line for now. Sitton is sort of a hybrid C/G. But he can fill in if Harrison struggles. Sullivan has a more proven track record but he’s 34. Regardless, you take a developmental Center in round 3 if you don’t trade down. There are three Centers in that 3rd round area this year.

Isn't some of that money reserved to pay for contractual raises to their holdovers from last year? And, IIRC, about 1/3 of their roster were free agents and those spots have to be restocked.
We can't think that all of the remaining cap space will be available for just a few key players.

A valid point to be sure. The players remaining with the Jets have to get paid as well.

I think the report coming out about Sweat's medical reporting he has a previous heart medical.condition may hurt his high stock projection ?

I would think so too.

Sucks for him cause he looked like a TOP 10 Pick. Still might be if it's nothing serious, but heart issues are scary.

He was cleared to play in the senior bowl with that condition because whatever the problem is it is considered low risk. I'm sure it will make team doctors examine him more closely but because the condition isn't new news it may not effect his stock too much.
