Justin Fields expectations debate forum

Jets faithful, I figured we can have a Justin Fields separate forum just for debated our expectations/hopes for Justin Fields. This is not necessarily an overall team debate or season prediction debate forum. This is just about what we expect or hope for Justin Fields to produce to prove that he is worthy of keeping and building the team around. He’s only signed for 2-years & 30M guaranteed. So that is pretty much pennies compared to the normal status of what players/QBs are getting paid now.

I’ll start it off by saying, let’s say the Jets win 8 games this year and Justin plays relatively healthy the entire year, that is a decent year record wise. A definite improvement from last year but it doesn’t necessarily mean that Justin should remain the Jets QB. It all depends on what he contributes to it that makes me feel he’s a potential beast (franchise QB) to he’s solid (give him another year) to he’s garbage and (he’s gotta go).

Of course I’m hoping this kid turns to be the real deal for us but I have no real expectations of granger here. I’m truly just hoping to see some promise in Justin. Something that says he has learned and can potentially be our guy. Something that says we should give him another year. If not that, then just stink it all up, so we all know it’s time to move on at the end of the year and draft a QB in 26.

This oline the Jets have should be damn near very good, if they can stay healthy of course and the weapons around him ain’t half bad either. Jets are building back this defense also. So let’s see what Justin’s about this year. It will be very interesting.

So let’s say he throws for 4,000 yards, 66% comp, 29 throwing TDs, 14 ints, and rushes for about 400 yards and 5 rushing TDs. Obviously these are some real stats. Damn near for a combo QB, franchise QB type stats and he’s a keeper. Also if he puts up these type of stats, the Jets are more than likely winning more than 8 games. Let’s be clear, I’m not expecting these type of stats, AT ALL!

Now, let’s go with 3,100 yards, 64% comp, 19 TDs, 9 ints, about 600 yards rushing and 5 rushing TDs. I’m going to say that’s pretty decent and he contributed to the Jets winning those 8 games. Stats like this might also contribute to more than 8 wins. If it doesn’t, it probably contributed to a bunch of competitive nail biting losses. Also that he’s showing some promise and the Jets should give him one more year to show and prove he can be better and lead this team to some real promise.

Now let’s go with 2200 yards, 60% comp, 14 TDs, 18 ints, and he runs for about 800 yards and 9 TDs. To me, we have a real problem here and he’s gotta go. This is damn near Zach Wilson type shit. A slightly better version of it, of course. This means to me that he not reading the defenses fast enough and seeing the field correctly. Also he’s not getting the ball out his hands fast enough. It’s also means to me that the Jets won these 8 games because of the defense and running game carried him.

This right here means to me that he’s no better than he was in Chicago and probably regressed from what he was doing in Pittsburgh. I think it’s safe to say that if he would have remained the starter in Pittsburgh last year, he would have put up better stats than this. More like what I predicted with the 3100 yards, etc-etc … option.

So what’s your thoughts, hopes or expectations for Justin this year?

No expectations. If he fails, we draft his replacement. Thats a win scenario. If takes them to the playoffs, then we own him for another year. Thats a win scenario. If he is average, we cut him and draft his replacement. Thats a worse caae scenario because he messes up the draft position. I just want to watch entertaining football.

While I’m not agreeing with @Bigmoe here, this post is too long for me to read.

but I will just guess and say that I expect nothing. Pretty sure that will be the right answer

I think 15-19 TDs 8 ints by air , with 15 - 18 rushing TDs is right around what he will produce. Of course it's pure speculation, with so many ifs before it.
Will any WRs step up? Will Taylor struggle to make the adjustment to the NFL game? Can Membou live up to the late surge and Hype. Will the D be able to stop opponents?
Don't feel like the W-L record will be the deciding factor for Fields future. I believe that the team should take a QB round 1 next season barring a giant jump by Fields. Worse case you have to trade one for multiple picks....

I’m really looking forward to seeing this young man on the field in a Jets uniform. He’s who I wanted the Jets draft that year. Being that Lawrence wasn’t in the cards. So this will be interesting. I guess I just need to see that Justin is average or he sucks as a Jet, to be able to move on. Of course I’m hoping he’s way better than both but I have no real expectations either way. I’m just happy he’s a Jet, and I hope he gives it his all, plays the entire year and let the chips fall where they may!

15-18 rushing TDs, am I looking at that correctly? WOW, has any QB in NFL history run for that many TDs?

I think he will try to win games. I don't know if he will ever learn the NFL game, but he has at least made progress while Zach did not.

I see Fields as being a bottom 10 QB passing the ball, but top 5 running it and we could have a top 5 running game as well. We won a lot of games in 2009 and 2010 with that approach.

Fields was rushed imo, as most of these guys are nowadays. Every rookie QB needs to sit for a year imo. They are exceptions but most would benefit from holding a clipboard.
I think He can be......Tyrod Taylor.
I loved Fields coming out but He is a quality backup at best until He proves otherwise.
I'm willing to be patient and see if He can develop in the right situation.
You never know when it's going to click for a guy and this could be an ideal situation for Fields. I mean, expectations are clearly low and the Fan Base isn't exactly "energized" with the off season moves. Maybe they catch lightning in a bottle.........or the SSDD occurs. Who are you kidding? You will be here, the same as I will be, rising and falling with our beloved Jets. Suckers ain't We all?

Wait, don’t we already have the real Tyrod Taylor?

Allen and Hurts both rushed for 15 TDs in 2023 and he is considerably faster than both. He had 5 in 6 games last year and if the Jets utilize him as predicted, I think he can tie or pass them.
The biggest question I see , is can he get over his time with the Bears. No protection, no weapons, no plays designed for his strengths. Led to bad habits, trying to do too much.

So the season starts week 1, against the Steelers now lead by A-Rod! So the Justin Fields locomotive starts there.
