Yeah, that might be more reasonable but knowing they need to unload him, I'm not sure it would take much more. But I'm sure the Redskins also make that deal. Same with Tennessee.

Probably. We could throw in something else if necessary. Maybe Milliner.

I know the guy is light years better than anything we've had in decades, but is he a cold weather QB? Is he a locker room cancer? Are his best days behind him?

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!!!!! (and are too lazy too look answers up) . . .

I think he plays fine in the cold, but I could be mistaken. I think players respect him.

A few one-off conditions are colliding to make Rivers available when no franchise QB is ever available in FA.

1.) SD sux, they don't care if they put butts in the seats, (always a question of blackouts surrounding SD games).

2.) They don't seem to spend more than the bare minimum to acquire help for Rivers, since he set foot there in '04. He's sick of it and sick of losing.

3.) He doesn't want to move to LA. Whether he just likes the perfect weather in SD or hates LA because it's a shighthole, who knows - but he is settled in the SD area and likes the idea of his family not having to pick up and move to LA.
Of course there is no other team around SD he can play for, so that isn't going to be a very realistic concern when it comes right down to it.

4.) He will get the largest signing bonus in NFL history. Pretty sweet deal, if you think about it. He could get paralyzed for life and fund the research to cure him with his signing bonus alone.
He'll likely get the largest short term contract, on an annual basis, of any player in NFL history as well - especially those 1st couple of seasons when the team has to eat up the majority of his guaranteed money to avoid being strapped down the road.
Favre got about $26M from Minnehaha for a single season, (paid out over 2). Rivers will easily exceed that in signing money alone.

5.) L-O-V-E
Imagine you are a perennial loser team like CLE or DET, JAX or Trampa, or the Jets, and you land the biggest world-class fish in the ocean.
The fans will have hearts explode, babies made at a record pace, and alcohol consumed in mass quantities leading to non-stop outrage from liberal income-gap critics over the vast differences between brewery owners and factory keg fillers' salaries.
It's possible Phillip Rivers may become the largest urban landholder in human history as cities give him entire swaths of real estate to build a home on and the largest head of household on Earth as fans give up not only their first-born but 2 subsequent chilluns if he'll promise to play for their team.

6.) A franchise tag in 2016 would cost SD about $20M, (current FT number is $18.38M, up 8.75% from $16.9M last season).
In 2017 a 2nd FT would cost SD 140% more,($28M).
They may stall his departure until 2017 but that's about it.
Of course by then Rivers will be 35 and no longer seem like such a good long-term investment.

Name the last healthy Elite Franchise QB, still in his PRIME (33 last December), to leave his team and play for another.
(Middle Manning was 35 and had a broken neck.)
