Mac - Needs a TD Tonight

Mac has impressed us all so far. He outperformed our most realistic dreams. Now comes the real work. Mac needs nothing less than a touchdown tonight. Whether he has six picks or trades for more (which I'm hoping he does), he needs to draft three starters, two backups and a special teams contributor.

Much to my chagrin, it looks like he's not moving Mo. We need a starter at LB, someone good enough to let David Harris go next year. Also need a starter at tackle allowing Mac to release Giacommini in 2017 and provide a reasonable back up for Clady going forward.

I think the key is going to be getting value (read; starters) in the second, third and fourth rounds. We cannot afford any more Ducasse's, Hill's, Clemens', Geno's, McDougle's, Winters', and the list goes on and on. To get out of this rut, we need to find starters who can contribute. Given all of our holes, we need three significant contributors in the first three rounds this weekend.

Mac must do with the draft this year what he did with free agency last year. Nothing less.

Well, look.... In order to yield a guy that will allow Mac to cut Giacomini, you have to think he'll be utilizing a 1st rounder to do so at least. Plug in starters are usually not available after the 1st round. If he does in fact invest a 1st rounder? I would Jason Spriggs would be available and apparently this guy is the very best LT besides Laremy Tunsil.

Start at OLB is another challenge that I just don't see being that easy. MAYBE Spence slides to the 2nd round because of the character concerns? But even then you have a real character concern on your hands. Could turn out to be just another Greg Hardy or someone like that?

With the two above, you're already asking for something which may not be possible. It's not easy.

Really, JMO, but I think he should let the good picks come to him. Just take BAP. Maybe trade down a few times if Mac has confidence that there's still talent when the Jets draft later? But always observe the BAP rule with no consideration as to position and whether it's a need or not.

Utilize FA to fill in those other gaps. For me, that would make the draft a lot easier for anyone doing the drafting. I think chasing need is the wrong approach.

Yes, I agree with the BPA. I'm high on Spriggs too and see few guys that may be on the board mid-first that are rated higher at any position. If so, I'm fine with drafting them with the exception of defensive tackle. I don't see anyone in the middle of the first that would be so far ahead of Spriggs. There have been examples of OL drafted mid-first and later who have been plug and play. That's what Mac needs to find.

A few exceptions are at WR and CB. Marshall and Decker are great but are getting old. Time to find their replacements so we're not overpaying them in a year or two. CB is similar in that I don't think there is a future #1 corner on this roster and if he's sitting there at #51 or #83, you grab him.\

I think most people overestimate BPA. Last year Mac took Williams because he was SO much better than anyone on the board and may have been the best player in the entire draft. After the first round, I think BPA is hard to distinguish after the fall off of talent. Just my opinion.

If BPA turn out to be DT, DE and S well so be it but unless they all grade out like Leonard, I would like to see OT, OLB, ILB/WR.

Three starters out of this draft? When, this year? That's not a touchdown, that's a pipe dream.

We won't know about the success of this draft until around 2017-2018, when players get the chance to develop and compete for spots.

With all due respect, if Mac nabs Spriggs, Fackrell and Nick Martin (should he fall to round 3) that's three starters by mid-season. Martin can start at guard and eventually take over for Mangold. If he takes Ragland, Martin and Le'Raven Clark, that's three starters. If he chooses Darren Lee, Josh Garnett and Will Redmond you will have two starters and a regular rotation guy in 2016 and three starters in 2017. Throw a guy like Tyler Boyd or Will Fuller in there and you have a part-time starter this year and full time in 2017.

My point really is that we need to expect more from our drafts. Seattle started several first and second year players under Pete Carroll. We can't continue to show virtually nothing in our second and third round picks. I believe we can find this year or next year's starters there. Hey, I hope to heck that Devin Smith works out but our second rounder needs to do more.

Case in point, look at the Ravens 2014 draft.

1st Round - CJ Mosely, started 16 games in 1st year, never looked back, starter in 2016

2nd- Timmy Jernigan, started 3 games 1st year, 8 games 2nd year, starter in 2016

3rd - Crockett Gilmore, started 1 game in 1st year, (all) 10 games 2nd year, starter in 2016

5th - John Urschel, started 3 games 1st year, 7 games 2nd year, starter in 2016, starter in 2016

Granted they didn't all come in day 1 to start all 16 games. But they all contributed and quickly became full-time starters. Keep in mind this was a team one year removed from winning the Super Bowl.

Expect more!

This is an odd statement. You say Maccagnan has "outperformed our most realistic dreams," that he's done a solid job. Then you say he "needs" a TD tonight?

I'm not sure I understand that. While we are all rooting for him to have a very good draft, if he's done a good job, where is the "need?" Why does he need nothing less than a huge night? Is he in trouble of getting fired, despite doing a good job?

Or is this a case of Jets fans holding their team to unrealistic standards?

I'm keeping a running tally of the number of times posters make statements over the next 3 days about Maccagnan needing to be fired.

Yes, last year BPA was a no brainier. This year, need is a huge factor, like it or not

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Who said anything about being fired?! I love when posters want to overreact to non-over reactions.

Here's the point...in order for Mac to continue the upward trend, he needs a home run in the next three days. In order for him to CONTINUE the trend, he needs to do with the draft this year what he did in free agency last year.

Calm down posters, non one here is calling for anyone's head!!! Just saying we need to seriously improve our drafting prowess.

By that rationale, though, if he hits a home run this draft, in order to keep the "upward trend," as you say, he will need a grand slam next time, and then what the time after? A five-run homer?

He has done a very good job. And yes, him having a great draft would be welcome. But even the best GMs and front offices in the league don't hit home runs every time.

for Maccagnan all he needs to do is be consistent in improving the roster each year and he will be successful in being that savior that we have needed for decades...

This just shows how mediocrity has become accepted in Jets Land. It simply means that Mac needs to improve this team in the draft. He couldn't do it in free agency and now he must improve the team via the draft. Clearly he didn't improve the team very much via the draft last year and he needs to score big this year. He needs to show us that he's every bit as good as Ozzie Newsome.

How anyone can say anything but it just amazing to me.

Mediocrity? That is absolutely ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but ANY fan of ANY team would be unreasonable with the expectations you have.

In the 2012 draft the Seahawks drafted;

James Carpenter - Immediate starter
John Moffitt - Immediate starter
Richard Sherman - Immediate starter
Byron Maxwell - Immediate contributor, eventual starter
Malcolm Smith - Immediate contributor, eventual starter

And they won the Super Bowl shortly after.

Raise the expectations!!!

Vince Williams - immediate contributor/part-time starter in ROUND SIX

Raise the bar!!!

In the 2015 draft the Arizona Cardinals selected;

Markus Golden - immediate contributor, starter by year end
David Johnson - immediate contributor, starter by year end
Rodney Gunter - immediate contributor, starter by week 4
JJ Nelson - immediate contributor, started 2 games in ROUND 5

Yes, Mac needs to duplicate this kind of success

Well, they punted their best pick in the draft. Just drafted Aaron Maybin again.

I don't think that's true. I like the pick. Maybin was a one trick pony who could only rush the QB with one move. Lee is great in coverage and I think Bowles was sick of watching guys like Davis and Harris chasing running backs from behind all game long. I think Mac and Bowles love the kids attitude which is cocky and aggressive. Look at it this way, if they add a guy like Correa or Fackrell, teaming them with Mauldin behind that DL, and Bowles has a big, fast, ferocious defense.

I think they need to find two more starters (by year end!) at OL and another LB. Take Fackrell and Le'Raven Clark and you fit that bill.

I agree. If every pick this year does not make it to Canton, I want Maccagnan shoved into the harbor on a wooden raft and given a viking funeral!
